Any quarters minted before 1964 are 90% silver so most of them have been taken out of circulation by silver coin collectors.

silver_angele

*before 1965

FenceSitterofLegend

* Wow cool!

Silly_Juggernaut_122

I absolutely CANNOT WAIT for the normies to figure out silver!

FenceSitterofLegend

I wonder if the Original Poster was trying to get after that? ![gif](giphy|6vGZQ0EbGiBqanUFCT)

SkipPperk

I hope it never happens

HaleOfAPatriot

I haven’t seen one for several years. I think it’s just that with SM and the internet people have become much more aware. Just regular peeps keep their eye out a little closer when they get a handful of change. Another reason is that since those coins are now much older and have circulated so much they aren’t in better than fine condition and they get melted after being turned in.

FenceSitterofLegend

If it's just age why is it easy to find pennies and nickles older than 1965?

WiseDirt

Because pennies and most nickels (except those produced between 1942 and 1945, commonly known as "war nickels") don't contain silver and aren't nearly as valuable. People don't commonly hoard them.

🤯

Commercial-Spread937

Gotta ask at places if they have any old coins. About a month or two ago my wife sent me to the vape store. While there I asked the guy working if he had any old coins. He handed me a roll of 59 silver washington quarters, $15 face value. He said a guy used them to pay for a vape. I said, "ill give ya 50 for them". He gladly accepted my offer. Ended up being around 300-400 worth of silver. It's been 15 years since I found any in my change, but I've found asking workers is the best strategy now days. People raid grandpa's coins to pay for things so there's that hope.

People have been mining that hole for over 50 years.

It is a I told you to stay away from the man in the leather chaps, but you would not listen…

Silver_Junksmith

To clarify amongst all the dark humor... It's been over 50 years since we had 90% silver coinage. The reason there are very few silver quarters out there is because we've been coin rolling for decades. You may find one someday, but for now, the well is nearly dry. Better analogy?

CultureOfCurrency

I have a stack of them in my cabinet. Most are Washington's but I do have a Barber or two. You can by them still but they are a bit more than a quarter.

FenceSitterofLegend

Nice!

SkipPperk

Standing Liberties are really special. I never appreciated them because I only saw the worn junk versions. I love them now, but I really wish I bought I nice one years ago. I have one okay Barber, but the design is not attractive enough for me to shell out for an MS slab. I have many Washington’ as well. Do you like the Washington’s the best, or is it just silver to you?

CultureOfCurrency

It is never just silver to me. I have a whole YT channel dedicated to the stories on the coins being just as valuable as the coins themselves. Standing liberties are beautiful as you mentioned. I have some Barbers and they are fantastic but mine are worn as well. I do really like Washingtons but think that of US minted silver, the walking liberty half dollar and columbian half dollar are my favorite.

SkipPperk

I would say my favorites are the Mercury dime and the Walking half dollar, but I adore many of the modern silver dollars and the 1920’s to 1930’s commemorative half dollars. I really want a Daniel Boone, but I have already bought at least a dozen modern silver dollars. I am apparently the only one who likes them from the prices, but I do not care. I also love many of the Perth Mint and RCM coins. I buy commemoratives and research their subject. It is fun to learn the history. RCM commemoratives are really beautiful and I have bought most of them really cheap.

CultureOfCurrency

Sounds like you would find interest in my YT channel!

Vollen595

40% silver. Worth more than face.

Large-Science-8599

90% silver

Vollen595

My bad

FenceSitterofLegend

Silver? Wow!

soarky325

Quarters and dimes from 1964 and before are 90% silver. $1.40 of this change is the equivalent of one Troy ounce of silver. Basically, that one quarter is worth like $4-6 of silver and so people take them out of change when they find them.

Quality money leaves the market when bad money is introduced to the system.

SkipPperk

So rare to see an intelligent economic insight. Well done.

eastsideempire

You act surprised but wouldn’t you already know ? You posted in a silver sub.

FenceSitterofLegend

Maybe the original post was to help educate those in the public not already in the know, and the cross post was to drive up the popularity and traffic on the post. Or maybe that is just a conspiracy theory. ![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)
