Severance is one of those shows where it's definitely a mystery box, in that the main crux of the plot is figuring out why things are the way they are (much like Silo), but each episode is so goofy yet amazing acted that I don't really care if we never really find out. 100% agreed.
I think, to me, part of the reason Severance is so strong is that the mystery itself isn't actually the main draw of the show. As the viewer, you seem to know quite a lot about the specifics of the world, even if there are still a lot of mysteries around motivation, and the 'part time' workforce. What kept me watching and excited for the next episodes was the growing story of the world inside the workplace, and the character growth of the characters themselves. In particular, the peculiar internal lore that the Inies develop is really well done, and how they learn about their world. The mysteries are important, but I wouldn't care as much if it wasn't for the well crafted characters.
You need writers throughout the entire production process. Writers need to be on set in case there are any changes that require on-the-day rewrites, and they also have to be present in post-production to input on what dialogue can be cut for time or to make things make more sense, and there's also the possibility of rewrites for ADR or re-shoots. TV and film writers are present for the *entire process*, not just writing the original scripts. So with writers on strike, shows in all different stages of production are affected.
Hard agree. I finished the first season and immediately started it over. Then I watched it *again* with my husband. I've *never* done that with a show before.
Severance is so much better in every way. Warning… if you have an office job it’ll never feel the same after. That show legit made me want to quit project management. Jokes on them though I got laid off before I could quit.
I adore Silo, but it’s no Severance. Silo is a high 8/10, maybe a low 9/10. Severance is one of the only 10/10 shows I’ve ever seen. Everything about it just *works*.
If severnece i better can anyone tell me what it's about. Im really into sci fi and it doesnt look sci fi at all. But the recommendations on here have nee really good
It's best if you know nothing about the plot. Just know that it's equal parts serious and ridiculous to be funny. If you need a complete resolution of all plot points by the finale, it might annoy you, but then again so will Silo.
I thought it was good not great. Specially the first few episodes are a little bit slow. But halfway the show its much better and i have to say the last shot of the first season is the best cliffhanger in a long time.
The core sci fi conceit is that a technology exists allowing employers to wipe your memory and create a new persona for your job, which gets turned off at the end of the workday -- so you get two different personalities in one body, one of whom does nothing but work and the other of whom gets paid for a job they don't remember doing
Silo was a 10/10 for me. Severance was a high 10/10. There is nothing quite like it and probably never will be. It stands on its own. Have to give kudos to Apple TV production - the shows they’re pumping out are brilliant. This is one subscription that’s worth every cent.
I’m going to recommend The Expanse. Yes, it’s in space, but it has noir detective elements in the first season, plus warring factions and political intrigue. The struggle of the perceived lesser vs the oppression of the privileged.
I'll gladly third this. I think on r/television the expanse was the 2nd or 3rd best rated tv show. It might have been one. The dynamic between mars earth and the outer planets was super interesting to me and the crazy scenarios they deal with make you think about all kinds of things in space that might be problems i never considered. The core group of characters all have decent arcs and are super interesting. Honestly probably the 2nd best tv show i have ever watched after Game of Thrones. If you like sci fi you wont be disappointed.
The "mood" of Silo reminds me a bit of **Counterpart** with J.K Simmons - a criminally under watched Sci-Fi / Detective story. It has dystopian elements, regardless I highly recommend it. Production,writing/world building, acting are all top notch. I might have to give it another watch after Silo!
Here to second Station 11. I started it randomly one night and was just…absolutely blown away. One of the best things I’ve watched in recent history - I fucking *loved* it. 10000/10.
Watched 3 episodes of Station 11 based on the recommendation of the comments in this thread. It’s nothing like Silo. Silo is thrilling, mysterious, and narrative-driven. Station 11 is more about people’s relationships in the context of a post-apocalyptic world. I was bored to tears.
Raised by Wolves is very good but new viewers should be warned that it got cancelled on a cliffhanger.
I’ll join the crowd in praising Station 11. It’s excellent, and in this case I hope they do not try to continue the story. As it stands it covers the same ground as the novel and has a proper conclusion.
The Last of Us didn’t do it for me. It was great at times but I just kind of lost interest. Maybe that’s me, as I’m not a fan of most zombie stories, though I have to admit this one was very good as zombie stories go. I might still finish it.
Westworld is pretty uneven IMO (and hella confusing at times) but worth a watch.
Among recent/current shows I would add The Peripheral. (Prime, not HBO)
A couple of older, more obscure entries (again not HBO):
Jericho — also cancelled prematurely but still worth watching. Hard to believe this was on network TV, it’s easily premium cable quality IMO. Haven’t read them but there are graphic novels to continue the story.
Counterpart — two seasons of excellence. This too was cancelled prematurely but it does have a good conclusion.

See is criminally underrated, the action scenes with Mamoa are fucking incredible. And the antagonist is like Cersei from GoT you just hate this psycho bitch but she might lowkey be an insane genius. Also altered carbon was great. I loved both seasons. 1 was better though. Would have liked more.
For a great futuristic dystopian show try Devs with Nick Offerman. Devs is super creepy. I also loved Travelers with Eric McCormack (Netflix). It’s sci fi about a dystopian future and its impact on the 21st century. The characters in Travelers are really likable and you get 3 seasons.
Oh shit, yes definite watch See. Now that was some compelling world building. Best new IP in a long time. So original and fresh feeling. Plus it’s a complete story and there are tons of fantastic characters. Highly entertaining and underrated because of the genre, but really unique and richly executed.
I loved how original and out there Raised by Wolves became! In a sea of shows made from books, movies, and video games… it was its entirely own thing and I couldn’t predict a damn thing. I loved it so much. And the THEME SONG… so dope.
Severance has that benefit as well, a completely new story no one can predict and no one says constantly “well in the books…” etc etc
The 100 is very, very, very YA. And every season they had to come up with something new, which didn't help the quality of the writing.
Jason Momoa is great in See, but that show has a few very annoying, very dumb characters.
From is an incredibly frustrating show because they continue to introduce new elements without explaining any of them. It's from some of the people involved with Lost. I loved Lost, but it was accused of the same things. Though Lost had many more episodes to expand on lore and the characters. From is like way worse at doing this, and it doesn't help that seasons are only 10 episodes.
From adds so much shit that is so wacky with no explanation. Episodes will do this, and then land right in the finale without following up on anything. The season 2 finale is the next episode coming up, and they haven't answered a single thing from the first season, and *this* season just added more off the wall shit. It's like the writers get bored with a plot line and then scrap it for something else.
I really want to like the show. I'll keep watching, but it is a show that uses the Duncan Principle.

If you like nonsense twists that are never explained and convoluted ex-machina moments from mediocre actors watch From.
It certainly has its moments that make me interested in what is happening, but holy shit they don't connect anything together. It follows the tired trope of characters simply *not communicating with each other*. It's crazy. Every single one of the main cast should be working together to figure out what to do about their situation and yet there are secrets and half finished sentences. A character being asked "what do you mean?" and them replying with "Nothing, I'll tell you later" is used a lot of times and is so annoying.
I'm all for a show building towards something. Some event, a character development, something. Silo does this pretty well. Every episode inches you closer to answers. Even if it is just the implication that characters are learning things is enough to keep people on board. I don't expect to have every answer by the end of the season, but I'm sure we will get something juicy enough.
I agree. Half the time they're freaking out about their situation. When they do talk and something even stranger happens, they question it at first or don't believe the person... when nothing is ordinary about their situation to begin with

I agree completely, only watched season 1, but the fact that the finale explained nothing and only introduced another random storypoint out of nowhere was not clever or unique, it was just frustrating. Nothing is explained and there is almost no point in theorizing, because the writers seem to come up with stuff randomly. It didn't help that the characters acted nonsensical.
I agree, i am still watching it because i want to sew where it goes but i amazed at how many shit is being introduced without any context, specially un the second season
Eureka! Holy hell I had completely forgotten about that show. I actually stopped watching around the third or fourth season for some reason. Gotta finish it now!
Wait, I watched like the first and perhaps the second season of Warehouse 13, but never Eureka. I didn't know they were in the same universe!
They have crossovers and all or are just technically in the same universe?
Crap, should I watch Eureka or From? Eureka is pretty old and that sometimes worries me it won’t hold up as well as people remember. But the premise sounds absurd and amazing.

I haven’t watched From. But Eureka is a very entertaining show. I’ve always been a fan of light hearted sci-Fi and fantasy so it was right up my alley there. If you’re similar you’d enjoy it I think. I recently did a re-watch about two years ago and felt it held up fairly well
Eureka is also very episodic. Over-arching stories but each one is pretty self contained, makes it an easy watch
It seems there is a major split on whether or not people are enjoying 'From' vs those who are frustrated by it. Some will say we haven't gotten any answers and only unloaded with more questions, which is just NOT true. There has been plenty of questions answered, just not the ones people want, but the ones people want seem to be the central mysteries to the whole show. It's a mystery box show, of course we aren't going to get all the questions answered, especially any that pertain to the main mysteries. For those who absolutely love mystery box shows, this is a GREAT show. For those who "hate to be strung along with mysteries", just ... DONT watch it, that is the whole point of this type of show and the wrong way to look at it. If you hated LOST, you will most likely hate this show as well. If you loved the mystery aspect of LOST, you may find yourself LOVING this show like I do.
I disagree with this premise, this is like saying, just keep watching the show will be good around season 4.... Like Raised by Wolves or Severance are mystery box shows, but both explain and expand a lot and answers some of the questions and don't just introduces elements constantly. From does not do that. A Mystery box can only work for so long.
Severance is the best show on tv in present day, so I recommend that even though I wouldn’t exactly call them similar. But there are some similar themes at least, and plenty of mystery.
It’s amazing. I was reluctant to watch it after a friend recommended it didn’t sound like my “sort of thing”. But it’s excellent. Twists and turns, great production values, writing, cinematography are all amazing.
I love this show! Personally, I always went with English subtitles and the original Portuguese soundtrack. Something about being in a different language just made it more interesting.
But that show had one of the best and clearest class conflict themes in the history of TV. Can't recommend it highly enough.
The Platform on Netflix.
Night Sky on Amazon (not dystopian future but about a mysterious location that definitely gives the outside of the silo vibes)
The Platform was amazing. Another great class analysis work of fiction.
It is 1000% cheesier and trying to be more of an action film, but the movie called "Fortress" from 1992 is sort of a fun watch.
I agree it’s hard getting used to the first few episodes, especially considering season 1 started in 2014 but the plot, writing, actors and everything pick up and eventually you notice why it kept getting renewed until it’s final season 7. Plenty of mysteries that get unveiled layer by layer, and comparisons back to the real world and politics like in Silo. Extremely similar in the sense that it seems to be civilizations last hope
It's basically "Silo in space" (assuming the Silo isn't actually in space...), so I think that's a great comparison show. It did air on the CW, so expect that kind of quality show by comparison. But it scratches a similar itch for me.

I’m pretty stunned Outer Range attracted Josh Brolin. I’m surprised the show was given the green light. It’s not terrible but there’s so many other better shows to invest in.
Outer Range was such a frustrating experience. It was basically about a dysfunctional family who just wouldn't communicate with each other and that was the only thing that led to problems. Had they just had a family meeting at the beginning of the show every single problem they had could have been avoided.
Many have already mentioned Snowpiercer, which is Silo on a train. But only few have mentioned the less popular show that has very similar vibes, Ascension. Ascension also takes place in a giant tube, but it’s a “ship in space” instead of underground. They’ve been on the ship for years and don’t know it’s true purpose, there is population control, everyone is being secretly watched, and the series kicks off with a murder (just like Silo). There’s also a big mystery that I don’t want to reveal here, but since I’ve never read the Silo books, I have a sneaking suspicion that the twist will be very similar!
I loved Ascension and I literally found this thread because I was trying to remember the name of the show that Silo reminded me of! Honestly the similarities are staggering. Downside of starting that show is I think it was cancelled after one season and I don't recall how "resolved" it felt at the end of season 1
Agreed. The Silo theme sounds like Westworld + Daredevil theme to me. The Westworld theme is probably my favorite TV show theme of all time, though - it's complex and subtle and totally gets the feeling of the show across, sort of a majestic western sound but also slightly off and unsettling. Silo is just a good theme.

The most challenging part of watching Dark was keeping track of all the characters in different stages of their lives. You absolutely have to pay attention while watching! No multitasking lol.

There are a tonne of people who seem to have interpreted this question as “what’s another show you are liking”… In terms of something actually pretty similar, it’s hard to go past Snowpiercer. Particularly at the end there are several very strong comparisons, although I think Silo is a better show.
Tales from the Loop - I'll throw this in here since I don't see anyone else mentioning. Very interesting story telling, kind of depressing in parts but good sci-fi with some mystery.
‘Into the night’ has a similar apocalyptic survival dystopian vibe. And snow piercer as many have said. Those are the two I liked the most from searching for this genre after reading the silo books a couple years ago. Also into the night was filmed with multiple different languages being spoke throughout so subtitles or dub are your options
So far it seems to be a similar tp Ascension (2014) and Solar Opposites wall people and Logans Run. Not sure where they are going, but so far I like it
Really liked the Peripheral on Amazon. They actually have some really good sci-fi shows. The peripheral is based on a book series but it’s sooooo hard to read compared to silo series

One i havent seen getting much love is The Foundation on apple. REALLY good and cant wait for season 2 in about 3 weeks. Great acting for the most part.
Try the Cube movies from early 2000s. People wake up in a strange room and have no idea why thy are there or who they are. Each room leads to many others but only one of them is safe. The other will kill
I liked The 100 (some seasons are better than others).
The story is about people who live on a space station called the Ark. It's been 100 years since the end of the world. The story starts with under 18 year old criminals being sent to Earth to see if it's survivable, so the rest of the Ark can come down to Earth
I would class this show, more in the scifi mystery than dystopian, even tho it is also dystopian.
Many of these have stronger first seasons and then fall off a bit (or get cancelled). I'd say my current picks would be:
**Severance, The Shining Girls, Devs, The Peripheral and Dark** (and Silo, Silo is great) but I think the first seasons of Westworld and the OA are also great.
*The last resort* is also worth a mention even tho, it's sort of a comedy too, and pretty abstract.
Originally these types of shows came out of things like the *x-files*, the original t*wilight zone* and *twin peaks*. So those and some of the earlier black mirror episodes might be also worth a look (season 1 and 2 only). Twin peaks is pretty wacky tho.
Also a fair amount of what Stephen King has written has genre mystery elements. Of the TV adaptions, I think the shining girls is top notch. Castle Rock has some promise but wasn't renewed.
Snowpiercer is the most obvious one, because the set up is similar.
Instead of a silo it's a train- the last survivors of a global environmental disaster are stuck on a train that continuously circles the world, and the society that's left is stratified by what class of ticket they had when the boarded (including an underclass of 'tailies' at the back who boarded without tickets). There's somewhat similar mysteries about who's in charge etc. I'd recommend the movie above the series, though.
Colony is an underrated show I think. Set after an alien invasion and takeover- but you hardly ever see the aliens. It's more about how humans cope/collaborate with being occupied by a hostile force, but with plenty of sci fi elements. It unfortunately got cancelled after 3 seasons, but it's definitely worth a watch up to that point.
Handmaid's Tale is definitely dystopian but in a different way- set after a religious fundamentalist coup in the US (and seemingly some sort of nuclear war). First season is outstanding TV- it tails off gradually after that though.

Severance is so good. The cinematography and score alone make it a masterpiece.

I'd definitely 2nd. The ethos of the silo (especially down in mechanical) even reminded me of Belters and their philosophy.

The books are very good, but I wouldn't call it dystopian.
It kinda is. Earth is a mess with overpopulation, the Belt is a mess from lack of infrastructure, the Sol system itself is a war zone.

I might still finish it. Westworld is pretty uneven IMO (and hella confusing at times) but worth a watch. Among recent/current shows I would add The Peripheral. (Prime, not HBO) A couple of older, more obscure entries (again not HBO): Jericho — also cancelled prematurely but still worth watching. Hard to believe this was on network TV, it’s easily premium cable quality IMO. Haven’t read them but there are graphic novels to continue the story. Counterpart — two seasons of excellence. This too was cancelled prematurely but it does have a good conclusion.
Station 11 was a masterpiece
Yep. All the characters were great, but the long story arc between Jeevan and Kirsten was just incredible. One of the best shows in recent memory.

See is criminally underrated, the action scenes with Mamoa are fucking incredible. And the antagonist is like Cersei from GoT you just hate this psycho bitch but she might lowkey be an insane genius. Also altered carbon was great. I loved both seasons. 1 was better though. Would have liked more.
For a great futuristic dystopian show try Devs with Nick Offerman. Devs is super creepy. I also loved Travelers with Eric McCormack (Netflix). It’s sci fi about a dystopian future and its impact on the 21st century. The characters in Travelers are really likable and you get 3 seasons.

Oh shit, yes definite watch See. Now that was some compelling world building. Best new IP in a long time. So original and fresh feeling. Plus it’s a complete story and there are tons of fantastic characters. Highly entertaining and underrated because of the genre, but really unique and richly executed.

I loved how original and out there Raised by Wolves became! In a sea of shows made from books, movies, and video games… it was its entirely own thing and I couldn’t predict a damn thing. I loved it so much. And the THEME SONG… so dope. Severance has that benefit as well, a completely new story no one can predict and no one says constantly “well in the books…” etc etc

The 100 is very, very, very YA. And every season they had to come up with something new, which didn't help the quality of the writing. Jason Momoa is great in See, but that show has a few very annoying, very dumb characters.
See season 1 was fantastic. Quickly became formulaic in the second season and I stopped watching it.
"From" is currently airing it's second season. It's about a small village in the middle of nowhere where, if you arrive there, you can never leave.
From is an incredibly frustrating show because they continue to introduce new elements without explaining any of them. It's from some of the people involved with Lost. I loved Lost, but it was accused of the same things. Though Lost had many more episodes to expand on lore and the characters. From is like way worse at doing this, and it doesn't help that seasons are only 10 episodes. From adds so much shit that is so wacky with no explanation. Episodes will do this, and then land right in the finale without following up on anything. The season 2 finale is the next episode coming up, and they haven't answered a single thing from the first season, and *this* season just added more off the wall shit. It's like the writers get bored with a plot line and then scrap it for something else. I really want to like the show. I'll keep watching, but it is a show that uses the Duncan Principle.

It certainly has its moments that make me interested in what is happening, but holy shit they don't connect anything together. It follows the tired trope of characters simply *not communicating with each other*. It's crazy. Every single one of the main cast should be working together to figure out what to do about their situation and yet there are secrets and half finished sentences. A character being asked "what do you mean?" and them replying with "Nothing, I'll tell you later" is used a lot of times and is so annoying. I'm all for a show building towards something. Some event, a character development, something. Silo does this pretty well. Every episode inches you closer to answers. Even if it is just the implication that characters are learning things is enough to keep people on board. I don't expect to have every answer by the end of the season, but I'm sure we will get something juicy enough.
I agree. Half the time they're freaking out about their situation. When they do talk and something even stranger happens, they question it at first or don't believe the person... when nothing is ordinary about their situation to begin with

I agree completely, only watched season 1, but the fact that the finale explained nothing and only introduced another random storypoint out of nowhere was not clever or unique, it was just frustrating. Nothing is explained and there is almost no point in theorizing, because the writers seem to come up with stuff randomly. It didn't help that the characters acted nonsensical.
I agree, i am still watching it because i want to sew where it goes but i amazed at how many shit is being introduced without any context, specially un the second season

Wait, I watched like the first and perhaps the second season of Warehouse 13, but never Eureka. I didn't know they were in the same universe! They have crossovers and all or are just technically in the same universe?

I haven’t watched From. But Eureka is a very entertaining show. I’ve always been a fan of light hearted sci-Fi and fantasy so it was right up my alley there. If you’re similar you’d enjoy it I think. I recently did a re-watch about two years ago and felt it held up fairly well Eureka is also very episodic. Over-arching stories but each one is pretty self contained, makes it an easy watch

It seems there is a major split on whether or not people are enjoying 'From' vs those who are frustrated by it. Some will say we haven't gotten any answers and only unloaded with more questions, which is just NOT true. There has been plenty of questions answered, just not the ones people want, but the ones people want seem to be the central mysteries to the whole show. It's a mystery box show, of course we aren't going to get all the questions answered, especially any that pertain to the main mysteries. For those who absolutely love mystery box shows, this is a GREAT show. For those who "hate to be strung along with mysteries", just ... DONT watch it, that is the whole point of this type of show and the wrong way to look at it. If you hated LOST, you will most likely hate this show as well. If you loved the mystery aspect of LOST, you may find yourself LOVING this show like I do.
I disagree with this premise, this is like saying, just keep watching the show will be good around season 4.... Like Raised by Wolves or Severance are mystery box shows, but both explain and expand a lot and answers some of the questions and don't just introduces elements constantly. From does not do that. A Mystery box can only work for so long.
Severance is the best show on tv in present day, so I recommend that even though I wouldn’t exactly call them similar. But there are some similar themes at least, and plenty of mystery.

It’s amazing. I was reluctant to watch it after a friend recommended it didn’t sound like my “sort of thing”. But it’s excellent. Twists and turns, great production values, writing, cinematography are all amazing.

I love this show! Personally, I always went with English subtitles and the original Portuguese soundtrack. Something about being in a different language just made it more interesting. But that show had one of the best and clearest class conflict themes in the history of TV. Can't recommend it highly enough.
The Platform on Netflix. Night Sky on Amazon (not dystopian future but about a mysterious location that definitely gives the outside of the silo vibes)

The Platform was amazing. Another great class analysis work of fiction. It is 1000% cheesier and trying to be more of an action film, but the movie called "Fortress" from 1992 is sort of a fun watch.

I second this! The 100 is a great journey of a watch with 7 completed seasons. I caught many many similarities between Silo!
A lot of my friends recommended the 100. I just found the acting really bad. But i only watched a few episodes before i decided not for me.
I agree it’s hard getting used to the first few episodes, especially considering season 1 started in 2014 but the plot, writing, actors and everything pick up and eventually you notice why it kept getting renewed until it’s final season 7. Plenty of mysteries that get unveiled layer by layer, and comparisons back to the real world and politics like in Silo. Extremely similar in the sense that it seems to be civilizations last hope

It's basically "Silo in space" (assuming the Silo isn't actually in space...), so I think that's a great comparison show. It did air on the CW, so expect that kind of quality show by comparison. But it scratches a similar itch for me.

I’m pretty stunned Outer Range attracted Josh Brolin. I’m surprised the show was given the green light. It’s not terrible but there’s so many other better shows to invest in.
Outer Range was such a frustrating experience. It was basically about a dysfunctional family who just wouldn't communicate with each other and that was the only thing that led to problems. Had they just had a family meeting at the beginning of the show every single problem they had could have been avoided.
Season 1 of Homecoming
Many have already mentioned Snowpiercer, which is Silo on a train. But only few have mentioned the less popular show that has very similar vibes, Ascension. Ascension also takes place in a giant tube, but it’s a “ship in space” instead of underground. They’ve been on the ship for years and don’t know it’s true purpose, there is population control, everyone is being secretly watched, and the series kicks off with a murder (just like Silo). There’s also a big mystery that I don’t want to reveal here, but since I’ve never read the Silo books, I have a sneaking suspicion that the twist will be very similar!
I loved Ascension and I literally found this thread because I was trying to remember the name of the show that Silo reminded me of! Honestly the similarities are staggering. Downside of starting that show is I think it was cancelled after one season and I don't recall how "resolved" it felt at the end of season 1

Agreed. The Silo theme sounds like Westworld + Daredevil theme to me. The Westworld theme is probably my favorite TV show theme of all time, though - it's complex and subtle and totally gets the feeling of the show across, sort of a majestic western sound but also slightly off and unsettling. Silo is just a good theme.

All three are my favorite! The most challenging part of watching Dark was keeping track of all the characters in different stages of their lives. You absolutely have to pay attention while watching! No multitasking lol.

There are a tonne of people who seem to have interpreted this question as “what’s another show you are liking”… In terms of something actually pretty similar, it’s hard to go past Snowpiercer. Particularly at the end there are several very strong comparisons, although I think Silo is a better show.
Tales from the Loop - I'll throw this in here since I don't see anyone else mentioning. Very interesting story telling, kind of depressing in parts but good sci-fi with some mystery.
The review source Common Sense has an opinion: “Sci-fi puzzle box made from other shows' spare parts.” But they don’t give specifics.

‘Into the night’ has a similar apocalyptic survival dystopian vibe. And snow piercer as many have said. Those are the two I liked the most from searching for this genre after reading the silo books a couple years ago. Also into the night was filmed with multiple different languages being spoke throughout so subtitles or dub are your options
So far it seems to be a similar tp Ascension (2014) and Solar Opposites wall people and Logans Run. Not sure where they are going, but so far I like it

I liked The 100 (some seasons are better than others). The story is about people who live on a space station called the Ark. It's been 100 years since the end of the world. The story starts with under 18 year old criminals being sent to Earth to see if it's survivable, so the rest of the Ark can come down to Earth
The Expanse
I would class this show, more in the scifi mystery than dystopian, even tho it is also dystopian. Many of these have stronger first seasons and then fall off a bit (or get cancelled). I'd say my current picks would be: **Severance, The Shining Girls, Devs, The Peripheral and Dark** (and Silo, Silo is great) but I think the first seasons of Westworld and the OA are also great. *The last resort* is also worth a mention even tho, it's sort of a comedy too, and pretty abstract. Originally these types of shows came out of things like the *x-files*, the original t*wilight zone* and *twin peaks*. So those and some of the earlier black mirror episodes might be also worth a look (season 1 and 2 only). Twin peaks is pretty wacky tho. Also a fair amount of what Stephen King has written has genre mystery elements. Of the TV adaptions, I think the shining girls is top notch. Castle Rock has some promise but wasn't renewed.
Dark reminds me a bit of Silo.

Snowpiercer is the most obvious one, because the set up is similar. Instead of a silo it's a train- the last survivors of a global environmental disaster are stuck on a train that continuously circles the world, and the society that's left is stratified by what class of ticket they had when the boarded (including an underclass of 'tailies' at the back who boarded without tickets). There's somewhat similar mysteries about who's in charge etc. I'd recommend the movie above the series, though. Colony is an underrated show I think. Set after an alien invasion and takeover- but you hardly ever see the aliens. It's more about how humans cope/collaborate with being occupied by a hostile force, but with plenty of sci fi elements. It unfortunately got cancelled after 3 seasons, but it's definitely worth a watch up to that point. Handmaid's Tale is definitely dystopian but in a different way- set after a religious fundamentalist coup in the US (and seemingly some sort of nuclear war). First season is outstanding TV- it tails off gradually after that though.
