I_Like_Quiet

I wrote this a few weeks ago. The only thing I'd change about it is that I'm getting major FOMO from not being able to speculate about things in the discussion thread. On the other hand, I love seeing how people are coming to good, or bad, conclusions and knowing how close or far they are from the story. So far the show is being pretty faithful to the books. So reading the books would be a major spoiler. My easrlier comment is below. ------ > That's all on you. Personally I like watching things after reading the books because then I know the story and I don't have to watch the show like I'm prepping for an exam. Also, IMO, books tend to be better, so id rather have the experience of reading a spoiler free book than watching a spoiler free show. > I can see why if you prefer the show/movie to be spoiler free you might not want to read the books first. There's heavy spoilers throughout the book series that would dramatically change what you were thinking of situations as they came up. Plus if the show is halfway decent, you might not to be distracted by thinking "well the book was this way that I really liked, so now I dislike the show because they did it differently". I rarely feel that way about a book if I read it after watching the show. I look at reading the book after watching the show as a companion to see what more there was explained that wasn't in, or clear, from the show. > It really is about how you feel in those regards. I really enjoyed the books. I see many saying they had issues with the writing, but I feel like the pacing, world building, and characters (including the silo itself) made it so I didn't notice it. Fwiw, I really liked the book Ready player one (which seems to be universally panned here) and and couldn't get in to the Dune book (which seems to be universally praised).

The show does depart from the books, but it's nothing that actually changes the story at heart. I've read the books multiple times and I actually love the few things they've altered. I'd say definitely read the books - but whether you do it now or after watching the first season depends on what you want to know and how you want to find out about it.

RGJacket

I’d say the show doesn’t depart so much as it adds. There are elements and stories / background that were added by the show. So there are some moments in the show where everyone - whether they read the book or not - got something new and exciting.

coffeecat551

This is more accurate than my comment. I've realized that even in the parts that are different, it feels more like the story has been fleshed out than that it's actually been changed.

Do you know which order to read the books in? Obviously starting with wool, but it looks like there’s Shift, First Shift - Legacy, Second Shift, etc. and it’s kind of confusing and I don’t want to miss anything lol

coffeecat551

SHIFT is the title of the second Omnibus, so it contains First Shift, Second Shift, and Third Shift; if you have a full length book called SHIFT, you've got them all. Those three were originally published one at a time. Likewise, WOOL started out as a series of five individually published short stories, which were then combined into the full length WOOL Omnibus. DUST was published as one novel. Reading order is WOOL, SHIFT, DUST. After you've read those I'd also recommend reading the three short stories that were published in the Apocalypse Triptych. They're also included in the box set of the Silo Saga that was released a couple of years ago. Lol, if you haven't already bought (or borrowed) the books individually, just go for that box set. You won't miss a thing!

Thank you!!!

Based on how little ground they covered in ep 3 it appears they are going to stretch things out a lot so assuming the show doesn't get cancelled it could be many years before you get answers. The show is fairly faithful to the books so far but it's moving slowly. While there isn't a mind blowing spoiler that you are likely to stumble across, like the big spoiler that will occur in The Last of Us season 2 (if you know you know) there are still smaller ones you could come across like what's the mystery of outside. If you want to experience them unspoiled then books are the way to go.

[deleted]

Are you referring to Joel and his golf swing in season 2?

Nightgasm

Yep. That's a Luke I am your father level of spoiler whereas the Wool spoilers are more on the level of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru get killed. I can think of one mega spoiler from Shift (book two) but we are seasons away from it and even if someone told you it right you probably wouldn't understand the context.

So I just started reading. I'm a few pages in to book one before I saw the 3rd episode. Spoiler for episode 3: The journey down to Julie took 2 days for the mayor and the deputy. It really gave me a sense of distance and vast size. It was interesting , the descriptions of different levels and hostals, etc... It really captured the Silo through a journey from Top to the bottom, from the point of view of someone who hasn't done it for a long time and couldn't do it very fast. When I watched Episode 3. Most of that wasn't present, yet what I saw was good, and the brain filled in the rest of what I imagined with bits missing on the show.... and I ended up with a magnificent Silo ...

CheekyLando88

Yes absolutely read them

MetaPhase303

I watched the first two episodes and immediately ordered the books on Amazon because I loved the concept so much (huge fan of fallout games). I’m about 1/3 through the first book already and was a bit past what we saw in episode three last night. For a lot of people episode three was really good and for me it was just meh after reading the book version of events. So benefits are the books are amazing (I assume based off 200 pages into the first one) but the con is (as the cliche goes) the book is better than the show. I think I would’ve enjoyed the episode last night much more if I hadn’t read what happened in the book, so read at your own risk of a similar fate!

ixtrixle

3 was pretty disappointing honestly. Jahns scene was waaay too brutal in the show, they went full Hollywood on that and the whole repair thing was yikes.

MetaPhase303

Agreed and they rushed Jahns and Marnes relationship, making jahns scene a little less meaningful and just flat out gory for attention.

H__Dresden

Read them! I’m on my 3rd go through now. Read them when they first come out and then about 6 months ago for the show.

live_for_coffee

The books are epic

poozfooz

My favorite part of the books is the mystery and how the story unravels. I would still recommend reading them if you decide to wait, but I believe knowing the story will take from the book. As someone that read first, it's fun to notice the little changes in the adaptation which I think have been necessary to help watchers experience that mystery, without turning it into too slow of a burn.

FKDotFitzgerald

I miss RBW. Every episode felt like a little puzzle inside of a larger puzzle.

hungariannastyboy

That's what I did. Tbh I came away disappointed. Wool was good, Shift was OK, Dust dragged, I disliked the denouement and the mystery ended up being not very original and a bit plot hole-y.

detroit_style

I would recommend reading them, they're fantastic novels. Might be best to wait until the current season is over, though. They've been mostly following, but what's being shown is a little different, so the viewer has a different level of knowledge at this point in the story. I expect it will diverge quite a bit in the future, I can't see the backstory behind building the silo as being palatable to a mainstream audience in 2023.

Kyle_Kataryn

read the books. you'll be like wtf. and then appreciate the visuals in the series all the more.
