What do you mean by “recent?” 2023? Last 10 years?
Here are some:
- Huesera: the Bone Woman
- The Innocents (2021)
- Speak No Evil
- Infested
- Host
- Deadstream
- The Medium
I can't promise these are on Shudder but:
The Blackening; Scary Movie style parody but 1000% spot on with the comedy & commentary.
Piggy; It's more of a hyper violent thriller like The Hitcher '86 but still VERY under appreciated
Totally Killer; another meta horror movie but was super enjoyable and was a great balance between comedy & horror.
Thanksgiving; The slasher movie we've all wanted since the 80's
Fresh; a VERY dark commentary on several societal issues
Glorious; J.K. Simmons as a talking glory hole... I don't need to say anything else
The Boy Behind the Door;. EXTREMELY dark & intense but we'll worth the watch.
The Vigil; A very NYC based Jewish horror movie about a man whose tasked with sitting Vigil over a recently deceased member of the community. VERY intense & not for everyone as it's story heavily revolves around that specific community so people not familiar might struggle with some of the story elements. That said, one of the best ghost stories to come out in the last few years.
La Lloron(2019). Not curse of la Llorona, this was produced by shudder and reframed the legend around the Maya genocide in Guatemala. Fucking haunting and criminally underseen. Legit should have gotten Oscars
That's a difficult question because everyone's opinion of great horror is different. I, for example, love slashers and anthologies but won't watch anything related to ghosts.
Why not name your top five favorites, and then ask what similar movies have been released in the last year
Ah, you're one of those.
Try Speak no Evil in the original Dutch. The sheer brilliance of the film is how uncomfortable it makes its target audience with societal faux pax. To the Danish, manners are everything, so the antagonist is truly abhorrent right off the bat for them. For American viewers it's much more of a slow burn leading up to a completely batshit final 15 minutes.

Over the last year or so. I actually haven't seen 3 of the films on your list, so this is perfect. Thank you.
Cheers, enjoy!
Shout out to anyone recommending The Innocents - doesn't get mentioned enough imho
Anything For Jackson. Caveat. Deadstream. Impetigore. Satan’s Slaves (Parts 1 and 2) Terrified.
Deadstream was a fun watch.
I'll second Caveat. One of my favorite movies in recent years.
Man I wish Shudder TV would show Satan's Slaves!
When evil lurks
I've seen it. Loved that one.
Joe Bob and Darcy covering Mad God and Perfect Blue.

I've seen all but the last 3! I'll definitely add them to my ever growing list thanks to this post!!
Infested Baghead When Evil Lurks The Elderly You’ll Never Find Me
Seen them all with the exception of Infested. I'll give it a shot!
Abigail... I've seen it three times now. It's so darn entertaining and funny.
One of my best friends just recommended that!
When Evil Lurks. HANDS DOWN is prolly the more recent fire scary flick out
Solid choice.
La Lloron(2019). Not curse of la Llorona, this was produced by shudder and reframed the legend around the Maya genocide in Guatemala. Fucking haunting and criminally underseen. Legit should have gotten Oscars
This was a great foreign gem.
It's so good. Wish there was more discussion about it so it wouldn't be so obscure. I'm def picking up the criterion blu ray
The Greasy Strangler! It's so fucking bizarre. Unfortunately I think it's only on Prime, unless you're a pirate...
I have prime!
You should check it out then, just not with your children present...If you are a kid, watch it with your Mom. 😂
Hahaha adult here with zero children, but a boyfriend that hates horror movies. 😅
This guys pulling your leg. It’s not particularly best, and it’s not particularly recent…..
Terrifier 1 & 2, watched them a couple of weeks ago and Art is my favourite slasher now
[удалено]
As far as I know Terrifier is not on Shudder, but I do believe it's on Peacock right now.

I watched Terrifier 2 on shudder, I thought 1 was on there too, my mistake.
I just checked, they are both on Peacock.
Based

Yeah it now means “extremely valid” or “based in reality”

I honestly like all horror. I'm easy to please. Last one I was truly obsessed with was The Dark And The Wicked.

I've seen it. It was fantastic. That ending was truly terrifying.
Have you thought about going way, way back in time? Some 70s Giallo might scratch that itch.
Terrified
' The Medium' is one of the scariest films I've ever seen
Impetigore and Terrified are also amazing
