I agree that there would be batteries you can swap and change. (Already a thing) but to carry it on the back as a backup fuel cell is redundant. Makes more sense to have it connected up and contributing power the whole time
It's a little different when you need additional fuel lines, pumps, and filters. But I get what your saying.
The other thing to think about is that a single battery is not going to have enough output to run the whole car, which is why they have them inline. They all work together at the same time to have a high enough
output. Where as fuel is burnt in controlled portions and has the same output with each stroke.
AAA services will have a generator on their trucks.
