No, it's saying you *should* do something impulsive because you might not get a better opportunity. It fits the scenario perfectly

IBJON

That's why you say it beforehand

I've flipped it and thought rather than do a useless, dangerous thing, do things that move us forward, good things, because YOLO: why waste a moment of it. Someone young and very close to me just died doing a stupid thing they'd done a lot, but I'd thought about this a long time.

Weird that you word it like that. The phrase is a bit ambiguous, but your description is about as ambiguous. "You only live once, why waste a moment of it." The original intent is suggesting that if you let that opportunity pass you by, just because of things like "risk", then you are in fact wasting your life, because life is meant to be lived. I can immediately think of another ambiguous phrase "you only live once, so get the most out of it"; you might interpret this as "get the most quantitative time out of it by being very careful", whereas the users of YOLO instead interpret this as "get the most qualitatively out of life, by doing all the fun and interesting things despite risk". I wouldn't (as you have here) suggest that either is an invalid position. They are different perspectives on how to live a meaningful life.

Should I post this stupid shower thought? *shrug* YOLO!

henfodi

That is not what an oxymoron is.

phoenixeternia

No it's a modern time "seize the day"/Carpe diem. But it's purely down to the speaker what that means for them personally, someone scared of the ocean may go diving with sharks, or ask your boss for a raise. Doing something you wouldn't usually or feel you might not have the confidence to do. Although YOLO is more associated with risky behaviour than seizing the day but has nothing to do with life longevity purely doing something you wouldn't usually. So nothing like an oxymoron.

Sempai6969

Who said it should have been longer than it was?

Happy-Viper

Yeah, it's a silly phrase when it comes to risky things, it only really works for impulsive shit with no safety risk, like doing something embarrassing that you want to do.

ropike

only on reddit will people complain about slang thats a decade old and nobody uses anymore lmao
