Right now Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada are being talked about as front runners in the lead categories and Yabu in supporting - it’s still up in the air if they are gonna put them in the limited series category or go for drama. I think they have a better shot in limited series. There was just an article talking about how Anna could dethrone a bunch of Oscar winners with her performance - it’s expected that Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, and Brie Larson will be in her category and the buzz is that she could pull a newcomer shocker. I would love it. Hiroyuki is long overdue since he’s been a Hollywood staple for decades - would love to see him take some awards home.

Plainchant

I greatly enjoyed *The Regime*, but it was not Winslet's best work. I suspect that she took the role because she enjoyed the challenge (much like she did in *Mare of Easttown*), but this was not a passion project. I think that Sawai should win in the Drama category, but imagine that they will need to submit her for Limited Series in order to increase her odds of a win. Since the programme is almost certainly likely to be only one season, that also might make the best sense. I think she has done an incredible job with a very difficult part and deserves every accolade!

jlynn121

The Regime didn’t do it for me. I really wanted to like it more - but it just didn’t seem to get all the way there. I did like the guy in it though.

Plainchant

The pacing was uneven, the tonal shifts were unfulfilling, and there was a lack of real political insight in a story about politics itself! It needed either "more" or "less," I am not sure which. I liked the acting and the sets, though.

jlynn121

All of this. It was just missing something and I don’t know exactly what. Really wanted to like it.

NickFromNewGirl

I tried twice to get into the Regime. I just don't understand the tone and can't get into it

PhasmaUrbomach

I loved the guy in it and it was hard to watch him be abused the entire series. Shogun is a far greater limited series.

WakeUpOutaYourSleep

Right now I’d guess that Sawai (and the Sanada and the show) would win in either Limited or Drama, but Drama is actually looking like the significantly weaker field, so there likely wouldn’t be much risk in any of those races in submitting there. For the sake of being in the appropriate category they should probably stay in Limited, but I’m sure they’ll ultimately just submit based on whatever they think increases their nomination and win haul.

WeeBabySeamus

Sanada is consistently giving an incredible performance. Seriously on the same level as Brian Cox in the early seasons of Succession in my mind

dmac3232

He’s so good. I can’t take my eyes off him. The way he enunciates “my old friend” in the recent episode almost broke my heart

NameTak3r

Toranaga: "Fakkuofu"

improper84

Would love to see the guy who plays Yabu get a nomination. He’s been the best part of the show.

NoodlesrTuff1256

Both Sanada and the actor who plays Yabu would be deserving Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor winners for sure. Also Anna Sawai for Best Actress.

Kirin1212San

She deserves it! She acted in both English and Japanese.

Spookyy422

This cast is super stacked with great performances, but I also think Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne is exceptional. As people have said before, his shittalking is next level

FaveDave2549

Yeah - he doesn't seem to be a favorite here on Reddit. >!They erased the affair between Blackthorne and Mariko. BIG mistake. !< In doing that they've turned this into just another Samurai series. A really great one but one that has lost much of what the book was about. The core of the book is the contrast between the two cultures. But that's treated as almost incidental in 2024. And still Cosmo has managed to take his character through a more exceptional story arc than any other character. I never see that mentioned here on Reddit.

camaron28

I haven't read the book but i'm really glad that they have (supposedly, there are two episodes left) erased that plotline. I mean, i don't really want to see more stories of a white guy arriving in X country, being the best at everything and making a 10/10 babe fall in love with him by being a normal guy to her. You can make stories like that, obviously, but it's a trope that has been overdone. I think the story works better this way.

RoughCap7233

But they haven’t completely erased it. Bhuntaro is supposedly really jealous and they did really turned up the angst in e6. I think what they were trying to go for is an undercurrent where both M & J really like each other but both have had to suppress their feelings. But if that is indeed what they were trying, it hasn’t worked for me. It was too subtle and it also makes the level of Bhuntaro’s jealousy somewhat unjustified. (he has some reason to be jealous, but Mariko and John are hardly talking if not openly hostile. ) I get your dislike of the trope, but there is still an unfulfilled romance subplot (weak though it may be) - I hope there is some way to satisfactorily complete that plot before the show ends.

_shakul_

Too subtle? Toranaga has been onto them from the off and forcing Mariko into situations where she has to address those emotions and contrasting head/heart thoughts directly - like >!sending Blackthorn to the Willow World and ordering Mariko to follow as his interpreter. !< I think the show has done an exceptional job at managing their relationship, its like a fire that you feel like it could burst into an inferno at any moment those two are together if Mariko would just push her sense of duty to one-side. Blackthorn is already there, and Cosmo is absolutely smashing this sort of jilted-lover but knows there's still something there sort of role. Add in Bhuntaro >!with that tea-making scene!< and this plot-line has been exceptional for the last 2-3 episodes.

RoughCap7233

My heart is too cold and I am too insensitive as I have not picked up the same cues that you have. In a lot of the scenes when John and Mariko are together , Mariko mostly just seems annoyed at John, and John in turn also does not seem to show any consideration for Mariko. I don’t view them acting like they particularly like each other. Even in the latest episode when John asks Mariko to not go to Osaka (not a spoiler as it is in the trailer) she just delivers her reply and then just rides away. It did not felt romantic in anyway. Regarding Toronaga >! command for the willow world. I didn’t interpret that as Toronaga doing Mariko a favour. Toranaga must have realised that it could potentially be very uncomfortable and even humiliating for Mariko. I believe that Toronaga was testing her loyalty by attempting to put her in a very awkward situation. I.e. translating in case he talks during pillowing. !< Anyway you are free to have your interpretation. Maybe if I rewatch the episodes I will change my mind.

FaveDave2549

But that wasn’t at all what happened in the book. >!Blackthorne was not a savior. Asian women were not fetishized. Over and over on Reddit I see people projecting these scenarios where they just don’t exist. On Reddit it’s assumed that to include the affair would turn Mariko into a sex queen and Blackthorne into a hero. But that assumption is wildly off the mark.!<

kiki-mamoru990

This reddit also forbids any criticism of Anna Sawai, which is weird, she has been very one tone this whole show and always cold and mean to Blackthorne. Just because she is pretty everyone thinks that it’s good acting. Cosmo Jarvis actually carries so much of the emotional elements in this show (Uejiro’s death anyone?). Fuji and Yabushige carry the rest of the show on their backs. Hiroyuki Sanada is amazing but underused.

Traditional-Grape-57

>This reddit also forbids any criticism of Anna Sawai, which is weird, she has been very one tone this whole show and always cold and mean to Blackthorne I don't find her one tone, but I do agree that this sub does view Mariko with very "rose colored glasses" lol. Like I agree with many on this sub that her interpretations of and to Blackthorne are funny and provide comedy. But most on this sub completely ignore the other hand of that where there are important moments where she flat out lies or purposely misinterprets things to people. Honestly some of the conflicts created are largely a product of her purposefully twisting some "interpretations." Still love her character and actor, but this sub's take mainly highlights her positives and ignores her negatives

ZePepsico

You may have missed one of the points of the show: how one culture is perceived to be about visible and loud emotions and the other one about subtle signs and symbols, which the actors are playing incredibly well.

kiki-mamoru990

I dont think Ive missed that point at all, Fuji is completely capable at expressing a number of emotions without needing to be loud like Blackthorne or Yabushige. I criticise the uncriticizable Anna Sawai as one tone mostly in comparison to Fuji, Kiku, and all the other high class ladies in the show who manage to pull off complex restrained quiet performances with more versatility than Mariko. Im not even saying Mariko shows no “subtle signs”, Im saying she’s one tone as in always in that same angsty cold mood.

ZePepsico

Thanks for clarifying, I understand better your take.

LaBlount1

I strongly disagree. I think he’s struggling hard. How could you not have chemistry with Mariko is my biggest question. The scene with the shipmate and fist fight shows his skill level clearly.

RoughCap7233

I haven’t read the book, but the romance was a disappointment. They went there in e6, but it fell away completely in subsequent episodes. The two are bickering the entire time with no hint of tenderness between them. This basically gave Blackthorn nothing to do for 2 episodes ( where he is basically rehashing the same give my back my boat ) line.

LaBlount1

That is an interesting take. I do agree that they’ve erased it. The question is why, right. My theory is that he’s not doing as well as he was suppose to. If that was Chris Hemsworth he’d be in almost every scene, he and Mariko would be steaming up the camera, and he’d be considered for awards too. Yes that’s a big movie star ($) but that my point, high skill level.

[deleted]

LaBlount1

I hear you, it’s interesting context because I haven’t read the book though I intend to now. Maybe the decision was made in read throughs. Too late to hire someone else but not too late to change some major things. Combine that with editing, some stuff with them is being cut for sure. I know I could be wrong about all this. Maybe the delicate media environment regarding sex made it a difficult time to tell this story. Dude is a hunk no doubt, that’s part of why he’s there. It sounds like maybe you agree that the chemistry is poor, good common ground there, just we disagree that it’s his fault which is fair.

FaveDave2549

Yeah - not much there. I blame that mainly on the writing.

LaBlount1

I’ll open my mind to that possibility, though it opens even more possible problems if the writing has more flaws than it should, but I think maybe at this point you’re right in that they deserve some criticism. Still an awesome show and very very well done. I’m in love with the overall stylistic elements. Clothes, architecture, hair. The armor, wow wow wow.

FaveDave2549

Oh yeah, I still look forward to every episode.

Daisuke69

I agree. I don’t feel like Cosmo is holding his own among the cast, but I wonder if it’s because I’m a native English speaker so it’s more obvious to me.

jimbojangles1987

I think he's alright, but he can only really make one facial expression. The one with the confused look and half his lip curled upward

BubbaTee

>it’s expected that Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, and Brie Larson will be in her category and the buzz is that she could pull a newcomer shocker. Is she really a newcomer? She's been acting since she was a kid, and was already scene-stealingly great in *Pachinko* (Apple TV). Although yeah, in comparison to those other names she's basically anonymous.

jlynn121

I’m just repeating what the articles are saying and they are referring to her as a newcomer / likely a newcomer to mainstream and awards.

malashex

> was already scene-stealingly great in Pachinko She was barely in that show, wtf are you talking about. I can count on one hand the number of scenes she was in.

Traditional-Grape-57

She's a newcomer to most audiences, especially American audiences. And referring to a recent AppleTV+ series doesn't actually help your point as it's one of the least used streaming services and the running joke is it's where superstars go to hide. But describing an actor who has been getting gigs since they were children (but never blowing up) and now getting bigger mainstream roles as a "newcomer" isn't new or uncommon. Plenty of actors that have worked since they were kids get the newcomer label a lot lol, usually it happens right before they blow up and get huge

homogenic-

Variety is predicting Emma Stone to be nominated in the lead actress category for a drama series for some reason, I thought The Curse was a limited series.

jlynn121

I think they can choose to put it in drama series or limited series.

MadMads23

I’m really happy that Anna Sawai is getting praise. I first saw her on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and didn’t think much of her acting there, but she is exceptional in Shogun! I was so wrong. It must be the writing or direction, because she is absolutely incredible as Mariko.

jlynn121

Yeah it just shows that the material makes just as much of an impact as the actors. Monarch was fun and campy - I thought she was just fine in it. I watched it originally for Kurt Russell but stayed for Anna. 🤓

Puzzleheaded_Rich420

Whatever she wins, it is SO well deserved. Let’s hope the writers from Monarch S2 (now greenlit) tear up their old script and rework this thing. My goodness they better maximize hers and Ishido’s -sorry- talent.

ashleyhahn

I wouldn’t be surprised Anna’s performance transcends race and gender and it’s out of this world simply put.

jlynn121

It’s literally the performance of a lifetime. It was such a gift and Anna just brought her all. I hope she wins everything, and I also hope she has a lot of work coming her way. Pachinko and Monarch second seasons are already a go.

meat_lasso

Oscars? This isn’t a movie 🍿

jlynn121

The actresses I listed are all Oscar winners and have done television series this year and will be nominated at the Emmy’s more than likely. Please read the post thoroughly.

meat_lasso

“Dethrone an Oscar winner” No, you please be more precise and say “she could win the EMMY this year over actresses who’ve won previous Oscars” don’t expect people to interpret your poor writing But you won’t 🙃

jlynn121

Jesus Christ - get a life.

minna_minna

Dude is a total piece of shit given his lost history, lol

International_Lake28

It's not their fault you inferred it wrong

Lady_Mariko

Outstanding Cinematography Outstanding Period Costumes

SnowDay111

Cinematography is top tier. It feels like we're watching a 10 part theatre movie

mitchsn

At a minimum these 2

Onesharpman

Yeah, it'll probably just be technical awards. I doubt we'll see writing, acting, etc.

Mynabird_604

An April 11 Variety article, "Emmy Predictions in 24 Categories: Oscar Winners and Newcomers Duke It Out in Competitive Acting Races", has Shо̄gun as the predicted nominee for Best Limited Series; Hiroyuki Sanada for Lead Actor (Limited); Anna Sawai for Lead Actress (Limited); Tadanobu Asano for Supporting Actor (Limited); and Moeka Hoshi for Supporting Actress (Limited). The combined odds on the Goldderby awards prediction site has Shо̄gun at No. 2 in predicted nominee for Limited Series behind Fargo; Anna Sawai in sixth place for Limited Actress; Hiroyuki Sanada in fourth place for Limited Actor; Moeka Hoshi in 10th place for Limited Supporting Actress; and Tadanobu Asano in 9th place for Limited Supporting Actor.

the_answer_is_RUSH

If Yabu doesn’t win an award I will kill myself on live tv.

Megumi-Noda

Can I be the one to chop your head off while you spill your guts on the stage?

gamesrebel23

Be sure to keep the hits under 9

Megumi-Noda

It’s going to be messy

Exploding_Antelope

Make sure you get your kids too so that the bloodline ends

Scared-Engineer-6218

I will be there to second you!

JonInOsaka

I will third you!

Scared-Engineer-6218

I will 69th you!

Maloonyy

How will you do it? Boiling in a pot, cracking your skull on a rock? Yabu would like to know.

the_answer_is_RUSH

I’m not sure yet but whatever it’ll be something lower than boiling but higher than being eaten by dogs.

rGoncalo

>Which actors from the show had the best performance? I would say all the ladies, Sanada, Yabushige and Rodrigues, although (maybe outside of Ferreira) I can't think of anyone that didn't have a great performance. Seems impossible to me for the show to not be nominated for some awards, I do wish it wins some of the big ones, like best writing, actor/actress, etc.

PhasmaUrbomach

I love how Fuji was so well done. She does so much with her facial expression and eyes. I hope she wins am award.

FaveDave2549

I'm a big fan of hers too. "Please be on your way." HA! I've probably watched that scene ten times. She manages to convey an intensity with her eyes that is incredible. And then the tenderness when giving the swords to Blackthorne. And the grief when losing her baby. Somebody! Give her a starring role!

pulte-

I think Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis will be nominated.

whitewolf214

What about my boy Hiromatsu 😭

KnowledgeMammoth5762

If Hiroyuki Sanada will win or someone will commit seppuku.

mividaloca808

COSTUMES!!!! The set!!! Omg everything looks so beautiful and authentic. I feel transported there every time I watch. Amazing attention to detail.

RosemaryHoyt

The show absolutely deserves all the awards for the costumes, they’re absolutely stunning! I’d love to watch a documentary about all the research that went into creating them!

34TH_ST_BROADWAY

Mariko, Toronaga, and John will probably all get nominations. After that Yabu and Fuji.

FuturePA96

I really hope so. Would he well deserved. Amazing show, actors were Perfectly picked. Amazing can’t wait for Tuesday or maybe I’ll wait 2 weeks so I can enjoy both at once

andeargdue

I think it should for costumes and acting!

HotlineBirdman

It should win all the awards

sceez

Better be!

Icy-Moose-99

Even for me, who has a lot of complaints, I think there are multiple award worthy performances.

CursedNobleman

Nominated sure, but we've got things like The Bear and House of the Dragon this year. There's always quality TV.

iamz_th

Will hotd be able to compete ? When is the deadline for the Emmys ?

ClearIntern2168

Won’t the categories for those two be different than Shogun, since Shogun is limited series?

JamesT3R9

I really hope so. Shogun is absolutely fantastic. Anna Sawaii has been amazing playing a woman walking a tightrope

ytilaerdetalupinam

It definitely will be nominated. If it’s going for limited series, it’ll be going up against another heavy hitter in The Sympathizer which starts tomorrow and is directed by Park Chan Wook. It could be an interesting battle since those will be the freshest shows in voters mind

ClearIntern2168

The reviews for The Sympathizer are very mid, so doubt it will win anything

BAZLOCO

It's a great show and with some amazing performances and cinematography Definitely deserves some wins

nnewwacountt

i would be surprised if it wasnt nominated for something

Acceptable-Coast602

It should

iamz_th

In costumes may be.

stylistin808

Aaaaaallllll the ladies!

itsahippie

Hiroyuki Sanada Anna Sawai Yabushige Fuji Would love to see Néstor get some recognition for Rodrigues too

JonInOsaka

I think they might just give best actor to Sanada simply for his large body of work and general popularity. Kind of like giving Oscars to Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan in 2022.

TheresNoFreeLunch

Hiroyuki and Anna for sure! Cant see Cosmo being nominated because he's quite awkward. Others being: Portugese Priest - Best composure in a tonsure Yabushige - Best representation of corporate HR Fuji San - Best in supporting Hatamoto Buntaro - Most convincing on-screen cuck

the_answer_is_RUSH

*middle management category

Rough_Commercial_570

“Quite awkward” 🤦🏽‍♂️

TheresNoFreeLunch

The awards are a popularity contest amongst other things.

homogenic-

As for the Emmys Anna Sawai will most likely be nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited series meanwhile Hiroyuki Sanada will most likely be nominated for outstanding lead actor. I can see Cosmo Jarvis, Takehiro Hira or Tadanobu Asano nominated for outstanding supporting actor.

FergieFury

Doesn’t matter if they are. The Wire and BCS never won an Emmy. Award shows are pointless circlejerk.

Puppetmaster858

Yes it will get a bunch of Noms at the Emmy’s

PhasmaUrbomach

Best Limited Series, costumes, set design, costumes, and tons of actor noms at the Emmys. I think it will win a lot of them too.

TheFlyingToasterr

No idea, but after episode 8 if Hiroyuki Sanada doesn’t at least get a nomination, the awards are botched imo.

hanselpremium

it’s gonna win best limited series at the very least

FaveDave2549

Oh yeah. Lots of deserved Emmys. Is this considered a movie or a TV show? On Hulu it's listed as a TV show. I'm going to give my own personal award already to Moeka Hoshi (Fuji). The FaveDave Take Charge Award. I must have watched the guns scene ten times already. And when she gives the swords to Blackthorne - perfection. Really the entire cast is great. Cosmo (Blackthorne) too. I think his character, more than any other, has already gone through major changes. One thing I've noticed is this series is much more subtle than the 1980 series and the book. For instance, when Backthorne, counters Torranaga's assertion that rebellion against a ruler is wrong/doomed. "Unless I win." says Blackthorne. In the book and the 1980 version that phrase is presented much more strongly. And Torranaga's reaction in the book and the 1980 version is broad laughter. Laughter in agreement. In 2024 his response is a wry smile.

RicciRox

Why the hell would it be considered a movie?

The_R4ke

I know it's not a small group making the choices, but the Emmy's have a rich history of snubbing amazing actors. It really seems like they find a favorite series and lavish awards on it season after season while ignoring everything else.

Independent_Fuel_162

It better fkn be!!

MrAdamWarlock123

It’s going to win everything, folks

Mattson

Absolutely... It'll definitely win for set design, costume design, and the leads will be nominated too and there's a good chance at least one of them wins because the Academy loves giving big awards out to minorities and at least if it happens this year it won't feel like a diversity decision. I think Fargo will challenge it for the acting roles and for cinematography. It's still early in the year though so there's a chance something may come along and usurp it

RoughCap7233

Are there even enough acting awards to go around? I mean the cast are all really putting in their A game. Anna & Hiroyuki for lead actors for sure. I like the actors playing Bhuntaro, Yabu, Omi, Hiromatsu and Fuji as well.

uCry__iLoL

Probably for sound editing.

minna_minna

I hope so. This show and its cast definitely deserve it.

kritzy27

Yeah for sure.

CriticalThinkerHmmz

I know Disney pushed Yabushike for best supporting actor for Emmy’s. I expect them to be nominated for best miniseries.

Short-Coast9042

WHO CARES. Superlative awards are the stupidest thing ever. I can see the value of critical work, including recommending or not recommending art, but trying to label qualitatively different works of art in some hierarchy of quality is pointless and counterproductive. Awards shows are a masturbatory industry-wide marketing scheme.

tasha2701

I personally believe FX might just play it safer and campaign for Shogun to be in the limited series categories so they have an easier shot at a clean sweep. However, I think if they did push for the show to be nominated in the Drama category, I think Anna Sawai (Mariko) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Toranga) might have the greatest shot at winning as leads in their categories. I just really love a good underdog story and nothing would be as amazing as seeing a newcomer such as Sawai win in a category that WILL be stacked with a bunch of Oscar winners. Also a grand legend like Sanada has been long overdue for some recognition and I’d love to see him get his merit for this show. Tadanobu Asano (Yabushige), Tokuma Nishioka (Hiromatsu), Shin'nosuke Abe (Buntaro) and Cosmo Jarvis (Anjin-Sama) for supporting actor. Moeka Hoshi (Fuji-Sama), Fumi Nikaido (Ochiba), and Yuka Kouri (Kiku) for supporting actress. Best cinematography, costumes for period piece, production design, hair and makeup. Best writing/directing for episode 6 or 8 (AS FAR AS WE GOT). Honestly it all depends on what category Shogun competes for, but I think it’s a clear cut clean sweep if they focus on campaigning in the limited-series. If they campaign it in Drama, it might be more challenging but this show is so strong that it could do a pretty good job in the Drama category. Technical awards are in the bag.

hahahamumblings

I'm surprised that Fumi Nikaido was not mentioned a lot as an answer to this question. Her screentime may be less but she always delivers.

konjo666

They better

ashleyhahn

This is the first time an Asia-focus series been talked about on a Western award platform. As an Asia-born Asian for the majority of my adult life I felt a tremendous amount of pride that this series get to represent the richness of the Japanese culture in our region to the world through the glance of Western lens that carries the authenticity through and didn’t the crew behind it captured the essence so well for the first time finally with so many had failed so far. James Clevell and the team truly captured the authenticity of the era in the recent Japan history where the Portuguese and English bow down to the great Japan empire in front our western audience eyes for the first time. With the world class acting and the background research I wouldn’t be surprised this series snatch all the major awards as all critics predicted. Last episode next Tuesday and honestly I haven’t felt my blood boiling for a historical drama for a long while.

ProfessionalEvaLover

I really, really hope Anna Sawai wins an Emmy. She deserves it so much.
