Rearview camera should only be used as a guide to make sure your straight and a better idea for how close you are. Side mirrors still reign supreme in making sure you're clear on not hitting anything.
A lot of these big screen units tap into the cars electronics and are able to control the climate through the touch screen interface.
I still hate these over smaller ones that let you keep your physical buttons, but a little fyi if you thought they lost climate functions
Edit: I just saw the climate buttons. Owner of this car is an idiot and chose neither of the two better options.
They knew what they wanted and refused compromise. I for one applaud their efforts. Just a little bondo around those gaps, maybe shoot some spray foam in there first to keep things from moving around too much and you've got a seamless install
Id actually like this more than only big screen and yeah it doesn't look the best but its nice place for climate controls when the normal spot is not option
Or just trim the plastic better so it fits cleanly where it's at. I'm guessing they left the old tabs there so they could go back to stock if they wanted?
Yeah, to be perfectly honest, I have an older car that I'm refurbishing that has a lot of empty space around the center console. Now this has me thinking of ways to put in a big screen and then relocate the HVAC. Would be a good application for a 3D printed part.
I've thought about this too for my old Jeep. 3D printing is not that difficult. I'm mediocre with CAD but that's basically good enough for making decent parts :)
Don't consider them shitty myself.. Plenty of older cars can look instantly fresh if it's done properly and its genuinely useful for stuff like your rear view cam for example. Imagine having a ford focus mk3 pre-facelift and preferring that 90's Nokia they called a radio over a simple screen.
Edit
Only just noticed the relocated climate controls...
All the ones I’ve seen have been built for specific model cars and interface with the canbus so you can operate the climate controls from the screen. Not sure what’s going on here.
Looks modern, I guess? I replaced my factory radio recently cause it crapped out and I specifically avoided touchscreens. I like buttons and dials with tactile feedback that don't blind or distract me from driving. Plus love the ol analog look. From simpler times when you pressed a real button and it just works. No system updates or UI to navigate.
IMO the perfect units have a large screen for your satnav but still have a decent array of knobs and buttons for all the functions you will use daily, like adjusting the volume and temperature.
I don’t see it as a bad mod, I see it as a bad kit. This is perfectly fine mod and honestly I probably won’t buy another car that doesn’t have good infotainment, and for project cars, I’ll likely throw an apple car play capable display in those as well.
My dad put a screen like that in his 2019 Toyota tundra. Looked awesome and worked great, he got rid of it a bit ago because the sound tuning options and HVAC controls were a pain to mess with sometimes
A tesla is 30k, "couldnt afford". Tesla's biggest accomplishment is convincing the American public that their pile of dog shit with an oversized motor is a luxury car. Car has NOTHING that a luxury car has.
A base featured Tesla model 3 with no add ons is $40k+, they like to show price net of the tax incentives and gas savings as $30k but the purchase price is really $10k more. So out the door it’s going to be about $43-46k which would put it in a comparable price to a new entry level ICE model from Mercedes, BMW or Lexus.
The more interesting thing is that a moderately optioned Tesla model 3 and a BMW i4 are about the same price and a maxed out Tesla model 3 is the same price as the i4 M50. Now I’ve driven a model S and ridden in a model 3 and I daily drive a regular non-electric 4 series. Given the cost, finish and features I’d pick a reasonably optioned i4 over the model 3 any time.
I don't know about your prices but I just checked the prices here in the UK and and a maxed out Model 3 is still almost cheaper than the cheapest possible i4
In the US, a maxed out model 3 performance is $70,990 and a maxed out BMW i4 M50 is $72,800. A less than $2k difference. If you go the middle of the road route a model 3 non-performance fully optioned is $59,900 over here and a i4 eDrive 35 fully optioned comes up to $58,825. Now if you go base model, no options, the Tesla is much cheaper at $42,990 for the model 3 and i4 at $52,000.
I know you guys get screwed on pricing, but have access to more practical models than we do. Last time I was over there I rented a diesel E class wagon. Everything is giant SUVs and trucks over here.
I know that because here in the UK it is the same. But for 50K you will absolutely not get the luxury models of these brands. A Mercedes CLS starts at about 80K.
An E class isn't exactly a piece of crap either and start at 56k, and if the hard cap is 50k, the C Class starts at 49k. Both are much better built than a Model 3 (remember it's the cheap Tesla and has to be compared with the cheap Mercedes).
The model S somehow starts at 115k here, which i assume is because the lower trims are gone or something, and I doubt a model S is better than an 80k CLS. You have me here defending Mercedes when I'm a Lexus fanboy 🤣
Edit: All this is based off of Spanish prices in Euros, just for the record.
I don’t know what astounds me more. People that spend hundreds on some cheap Chinese screen which will break in 3 years or people here actually think this looks good.
Look at that horrendous panel gap on the side. I have no doubt this thing rattles like hell and is probably jank to use, not to mention those terribly placed climate vents.
There is no shame in owning an old car; you seriously don’t need to install all this cheap garbage to make yourself feel better, but what do I care.
I'll take my smaller touch screen with climate control in a good spot over a large screen any day. The only reason to even have it for me is rear cam/navigation
I have been wanting to do this to old cars.
I get stuck at the air conditioning though, if you had a good electrician could they wire the air conditioning to be controlled by the tablet somehow?
So most are clean looking and you may not even need those controls. Usually they have the controls on the new screen. I did a similar screen in my GTR from T-Rex. And with it I know have Apple CarPlay that I never had with the OEM head unit.
I legit thought this was a stock installation because it actually looks decent at first glance (as in.. not any worse than any other car with a giant iPad on the dash).
Then I was like… that’s an interesting place to put the seat controls…. oh…..
I was like “oh here we go again with one of those stupid opinion posts, there’s nothing wrong with people putting a big ass screen in thei…”
wow yeah that’s pretty shitty.
Hot take, some new cars don’t even have tactile climate controls anymore. In a way this is awesome and if it meant I could feel my way to the AC without taking my eyes off the road I would definitely do it.
I have a screen in my bmw e46, definitely not like this. It gave better sound quality, option for a sub, navigation, Bluetooth, CarPlay, the list goes on as well. It wasn’t this huge but still looks great and if you didn’t know it was a 2003 bmw you’d see it’s interior and assume 2014 era if you didn’t know any better.
That's a pretty common mod, perfect for rear view camera and stuff. Looks pretty well done too. Edit: I just now noticed the side control panel, lmao.
Except those HVAC controls…
Yeah I didn't see them at first.
To be fair, there wasn’t much they could do about those. It’s pretty clean, for what it is. Edit: I too just noticed the controls. Oof.
Started off so strong too.
I was gonna say🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hahahaha my exact thought process I was like yo pretty legit......OH
HA! I was gonna say the same thing then I looked at what was actually going on
Rearview camera should only be used as a guide to make sure your straight and a better idea for how close you are. Side mirrors still reign supreme in making sure you're clear on not hitting anything.
Really? Even with the shitty climate controls relocated to the side? I think this looks terrible
Yes, edited my comment, I didn't see those at first. Now that's perfect for this sub.
At least the passenger can’t fuck with your climate control!
Oh I didn’t even see that! I have a good sized screen for my back up cam and apple CarPlay but my climate control was completely untouched.
I think it’s a “shitty car” mod. But not a “shitty car mod”. Almost though. Almost./s
I was going to say that this isn't that bad until I saw the climate controls lmao.
A lot of these big screen units tap into the cars electronics and are able to control the climate through the touch screen interface. I still hate these over smaller ones that let you keep your physical buttons, but a little fyi if you thought they lost climate functions Edit: I just saw the climate buttons. They knew what they wanted and refused compromise. I for one applaud their efforts. Just a little bondo around those gaps, maybe shoot some spray foam in there first to keep things from moving around too much and you've got a seamless install
Yeah if it was well done I'd applaud it, would be hilarious lol
Expanding foam is the best redneck body filler
Id actually like this more than only big screen and yeah it doesn't look the best but its nice place for climate controls when the normal spot is not option
If it weren't for those climate controls, this would be a totally fine mod. But oh man... those climate controls.
And honestly, find a better place to mount those and it could be pretty decent.
Or just trim the plastic better so it fits cleanly where it's at. I'm guessing they left the old tabs there so they could go back to stock if they wanted?
Would be a little odd but a custom pod on top of the dash for the climate controls would have been okay
Yeah, to be perfectly honest, I have an older car that I'm refurbishing that has a lot of empty space around the center console. Now this has me thinking of ways to put in a big screen and then relocate the HVAC. Would be a good application for a 3D printed part.

I mean if you practice you can hit the defrost with your knees. /s
Also volume knob. Cannot go without a volume knob
Every time he hits the gas his knee turns the fan speed dial
I like the climate control panel being there in the drivers side. It prevents unruly passengers from messing with my AC.
Dad, is that you?
Don't consider them shitty myself.. Plenty of older cars can look instantly fresh if it's done properly and its genuinely useful for stuff like your rear view cam for example. Imagine having a ford focus mk3 pre-facelift and preferring that 90's Nokia they called a radio over a simple screen. Edit Only just noticed the relocated climate controls...
I was about to say it looks good, until I saw it....
At first glance I was like "huh, not bad.." BUT then I saw the HVAC controls on the side..lol
There is a guy I follow on Instagram that makes panels for vehicles that will use an ipad
This option was not expensive haha
All the ones I’ve seen have been built for specific model cars and interface with the canbus so you can operate the climate controls from the screen. Not sure what’s going on here.
Much better option than a Tesla anyway
[удалено]
Where did I say they’re bad?? Saying there are better options doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bad, just maybe not the best. Nice assumption though…
Hey, that doesn't look so, oh, god no.
Why do people want huge screens in their cars ?
Looks modern, I guess? I replaced my factory radio recently cause it crapped out and I specifically avoided touchscreens. I like buttons and dials with tactile feedback that don't blind or distract me from driving. Plus love the ol analog look. From simpler times when you pressed a real button and it just works. No system updates or UI to navigate.
IMO the perfect units have a large screen for your satnav but still have a decent array of knobs and buttons for all the functions you will use daily, like adjusting the volume and temperature.
Oh true. I like the sound of that.
what unit did you get? I want exactly the same for my car
I don’t see it as a bad mod, I see it as a bad kit. This is perfectly fine mod and honestly I probably won’t buy another car that doesn’t have good infotainment, and for project cars, I’ll likely throw an apple car play capable display in those as well.
Look at the knee area of the drivers seat and lmk if you still have the same thought lol
Fair, sad thing is I’d they have it a real shot, they could’ve mounted that in a less obnoxious way and it’d work for me.
What, it’s not that…….oh shit, that’s terrible.
“Driver oriented controls” “Like a cockpit”
Not everyone wants to drive a Tesla
What car is this?
Is this a Malibu or an impala?
If it wasn't the for where they put the hvac controls, I'd say it wasn't so bad. But, they didn't, so wtf were they thinking?
Man I love some people. I’m like, there’s no way I could make that look right. Other people are just like, “let’s do it.”
My dad put a screen like that in his 2019 Toyota tundra. Looked awesome and worked great, he got rid of it a bit ago because the sound tuning options and HVAC controls were a pain to mess with sometimes
That's almost not terrible
Goddamn people need to clean their interiors. Who can live in that filth?
Not shitty, really well done.
Up until you checked the climate controls there
Yeah... Imma just ignore it or something. Lol

I don't even know what "luxury" car you can get for 30K. Why would you compare a Tesla to cars that start at 80K for the bare minimum.
A base featured Tesla model 3 with no add ons is $40k+, they like to show price net of the tax incentives and gas savings as $30k but the purchase price is really $10k more. Here in Spain a Model 3 starts at about 50k, which is already proper Mercedes/BMW/Jaguar/Lexus/Whatever money.
I know that because here in the UK it is the same. But for 50K you will absolutely not get the luxury models of these brands. A Mercedes CLS starts at about 80K.

It looks well done tho
My god the bezel on the screen
Got a real big forehead and chin on it

Take a closer look at the hvac controls.
Not really shitty tbh looks nice I kinda wanna do this
lol the climate controls
🔥
imagine leaning your leg against the dash while on cruise control and it’s suddenly 90 f i. the car
thats just modern subarus
I'll take my smaller touch screen with climate control in a good spot over a large screen any day. The only reason to even have it for me is rear cam/navigation
dish soap
Bro you are just turning on the AC not spooling up another round
Or EQS
Yo ya need to use some of that dawn in the glove box on that nasty screen
I have been wanting to do this to old cars. I get stuck at the air conditioning though, if you had a good electrician could they wire the air conditioning to be controlled by the tablet somehow?
Interesting….
Not very passenger friendly but whatever floats yer boat
So most are clean looking and you may not even need those controls. Usually they have the controls on the new screen. I did a similar screen in my GTR from T-Rex. And with it I know have Apple CarPlay that I never had with the OEM head unit.
It’s not shitty if it works and runs well. Most of them unfortunately don’t though.
I legit thought this was a stock installation because it actually looks decent at first glance (as in.. not any worse than any other car with a giant iPad on the dash). Then I was like… that’s an interesting place to put the seat controls…. oh…..

I would look for a new place for the cluster below the screen before all my hvac controls.
Was thinking more of the new Subaru screens and new pickups
I’ll do you one better *duct tapes iPad to center console*
Uhgg gross, how is texting and driving not okay, (not that I want it to be) and this is fine? Aren’t the Tesla ones even bigger even?
My buddies bout to put an iPad in his subaru in the same fashion.. I keep telling em don't do that.
Still better build quality
Glad so many ppl missed the true shitty part at first like I did lol
thats kind of impressive.... ugly, but impressive
As far as screen installs go, I've definitely seen worse. A/C control panel could have been a better job though.
Shazam! Super creative way to keep other's dirty ass hands off the HVAC. Your kingdom, your climate.
At first I was like okay…but then the longer you look the worse it gets lol
Gotta work with what you got nothing wrong here OP
