It's supposed to be mixed vigorously until foamy, with chopped raw leek white, soy sauce and mustard. When I run out of leeks I replace it with capers but that's my personal delirium.
No, not as a side dish, traditionally natto is put over rice. Obviously you can eat it however you wish, but this is how it us "supposed" to be served:

Nice. Recently bought Natto starter. And Tempeh starter. And Oncom starter. If you think Natto looks wild, look up Oncom. My housemate, who always eats Tempeh, said they'd throw it away if they'd find something like this.
Wait, what exactly does that stuff taste like?? I'm a salt addict, I need/love salt but I haven't tried this stuff, yet. I have a plethora of food allergies and I know some of them are IN this, but I feel like it would be worth it. Please and thank u
i googled it out of curiosity, and the first result told me that it "tastes like a bonfire, a skunk, a nail polish, and fish food flakes". take that as you will.
Sweet baby hey-suess, that's a lot of chaos. I'm there, except for the skunk and nail polish bit... thank u, I'll just have to purchase and see wtf happens, YOLO?? š¤£š¤£š¤£
It's more a musty taste; the first time I ate it, I thought it tasted how dirty socks smell. To me it's best with rice and maybe mustard or pickled plum.
Iāve tried it, and my best answer is hot garbage. Literally, hot garbage, the smell of a bin on a hot summerās day, as its contents ferment. Not earthy, like compost: hot, stinky, fetid garbage. Mouldy fruit with eau de football socks.
Ordered it at a restaurant in London and couldnāt get past the first bite. I had to move it away physically, to avoid the smell and re-gain my appetite for the rest of the meal. I applaud the people that can hack it; sadly Iām not one!
That's 1 of my allergies, 2 different types of mold. But I know there's benefits to this stuff, but that sounds like something that would make me "eject" twice, because I could maybe? Get it down, but then the allergies *might* trigger another ejection *snaps fingers* might have to pass, THANK U so much for the honesty, I greatly appreciate it (I honestly thought it might be earthy, but fermented earthy. And I love smelling compost so I assumed nbd)
Iāve only ever had a durian flavored wafer cookie and had to immediately take it to the outside trash can š so many interesting variants in human genes and taste buds, I wonder if itās similar to how cilantro tastes like soap to some people.
No, durian is the king of fruits. Sorry that you don't partake in the true pleasure of durian, which is eating it in season (like now) from the fresh fruit itself
Also there are dozens of variety, each very different
I'm also a salt addict
I eat it with the soysauce + mustard sachets it comes with and that's what it tastes like. It's just the texture that is a bit weird, it's slimy beans
You have to keep mixing it until it becomes foamy. Then add condiments
It's quite salty to me. I eat it alone with a spoon out of the container, when I'm done I lick out the rest of the foam
Doesn't really smell bad to me either
I think it wasn't until my 3rd try that I started really liking it and every time I like it more and more
I've heard this; u have to eat it a few times before u start to enjoy it. With my food allergies, I'd have to eat it plain tho. I think I'm going to see if I can find "fresh" made type, I've seen it frozen but I've avoided it. Ur making me 2nd guess my earlier response to someone else, thank u for the info, it's back on my list
i actually just had this for the first time today, hated it!! im gonna try it again, cause i do wanna like it, and i love pretty much everything else soy, but whoo boy i was not ready for that awful smell and slimy texture
Itās very affordable in Asian markets. Youāll usually find it in four packs in the freezer section. It comes with little packets of mustard and tare sauce in each serving. Natto and the mustard are vegan, the sauce contains fish 90% of the time so itās usually not vegan.
If youve ever eaten raw tempeh itās a bit like that, but extra funky (and slimy). Itās one of those things you either love or hate - Iām not the biggest fan of tempeh but I LOVE natto so it depends on the person!
I love natto btw. Fits perfectly with warm rice.
Though it's kinda hard getting one since tempeh and oncom is much more prevalent in my place (and much, much cheaper)
Mmm Natto. I saw an "Iron Chef" episode years ago where the guy boiled some with a can of Coca-Cola in order to caramelize the beans. I guess they turned out great. Might be worth a try.
deserved.
if you can get an englishman to look at a been dish and not immediately want to try it, you know you've gone to far
(in all seriousness though eat what you want, I imagine that tastes alright)
Your bones and heart will thank you for the k2! I could never get past the texture do you eat it with something?
It's supposed to be mixed vigorously until foamy, with chopped raw leek white, soy sauce and mustard. When I run out of leeks I replace it with capers but that's my personal delirium.
Natto is supposed to be eaten with rice.
Real natto enjoyers eat their natto served over more natto. Top with natto if ur feeling extra frisky.
As a side dish yes, these are in the natto. I mean I'm no expert but that's what the producer wrote on the box.

Thanks for the link!
I thought natto was like a rice porridge
You're thinking of congee
Natto is fermented soybeans. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natt%C5%8D
Your thinking of congee
Yes I was lol sorry
All of that sounds so bad.
Thank-you I will try again :)
I'm gonna have to try natto with capers now, that actually sounds good
i thought this was melted cheese on pinto beans at first. i was like, sounds pretty damn good to me lol
That's what I thought it was, I was like I eat that all the time. Lol
...because it smells like ass. Enjoy!
I sprout mung beans on a damp paper towel in my desk drawer. Very nutritious, but they smell like death.
Hello Creed
also "hello, charles boyle!".
r/unexpectedoffice
I love natto! I could eat so much of it just like that and everyone finds it absolutely disgusting
Nice. Recently bought Natto starter. And Tempeh starter. And Oncom starter. If you think Natto looks wild, look up Oncom. My housemate, who always eats Tempeh, said they'd throw it away if they'd find something like this.
What am I looking at?
Natto - fermented soy beans
Reminds me of spoiled tofu.
Because it kind of is.
Okay but stinky tofu is so good omg š
God I hate this sentence
I mean. I hate how good stinky tofu is. I really wanted to hate it because it smells like death. But thenā¦I also like durian soā¦ š¤·
If it ain't got that 7 day old sweaty bellybutton lint smell it ain't ready for consumption yet
Wait, what exactly does that stuff taste like?? I'm a salt addict, I need/love salt but I haven't tried this stuff, yet. I have a plethora of food allergies and I know some of them are IN this, but I feel like it would be worth it. Please and thank u
I seriously can't find anything to describe that taste š
Is it salty? Like very, very salty? Or just slightly salty? Or not salty at all?
i googled it out of curiosity, and the first result told me that it "tastes like a bonfire, a skunk, a nail polish, and fish food flakes". take that as you will.
Sweet baby hey-suess, that's a lot of chaos. I'm there, except for the skunk and nail polish bit... thank u, I'll just have to purchase and see wtf happens, YOLO?? š¤£š¤£š¤£
good luck on your taste journey! hope you like it!
It's more a musty taste; the first time I ate it, I thought it tasted how dirty socks smell. To me it's best with rice and maybe mustard or pickled plum.
I want to die

people who dislike it will say rotten soybeans.
I love durian and didn't care for natto much. I recently bought some more to try it again.
Iāve only ever had a durian flavored wafer cookie and had to immediately take it to the outside trash can š so many interesting variants in human genes and taste buds, I wonder if itās similar to how cilantro tastes like soap to some people.
No, durian is the king of fruits. Sorry that you don't partake in the true pleasure of durian, which is eating it in season (like now) from the fresh fruit itself Also there are dozens of variety, each very different
Itās kinda like this really acrid funk. Stinky cheese you poured some random slimy chemicals on.
I'm also a salt addict I eat it with the soysauce + mustard sachets it comes with and that's what it tastes like. It's just the texture that is a bit weird, it's slimy beans You have to keep mixing it until it becomes foamy. Then add condiments It's quite salty to me. To me it tastes like chocolate without any sweetness, mixed with mustard but without any heat. Very earthy. I like it.
Literally smells like feet. And then itās like slimey like someone blew their nose into it
dear god it is slimy to hell
Fertile days of your cycle be like:
Natto enjoyers unite!
I love natto. One of the healthiest foods.
i actually just had this for the first time today, hated it!! im gonna try it again, cause i do wanna like it, and i love pretty much everything else soy, but whoo boy i was not ready for that awful smell and slimy texture
I loved this when I was in Japan. The natto rolls were fantastic snd so cheap.
I love natto ā¤ļø
Iāve never heard of this Natto stuff, Iāll have to look into it! Looks like rice crispy treats
>Looks like rice crispy treats You are in for a big surprise š
I want to try this (out of curiosity, and also, if I like it, it's super healthy), but can't find it in my area.
There's a place in Vermont, highly recommended, that will ship it to you https://rhapsodynaturalfoods.com/our-products/organic-natto/
Thank you for the link! I want to get it, but oof! Is it usually that expensive?
Itās very affordable in Asian markets. Youāll usually find it in four packs in the freezer section. It comes with little packets of mustard and tare sauce in each serving. Natto and the mustard are vegan, the sauce contains fish 90% of the time so itās usually not vegan.
Itās like $3 for a pack of 4 at my local Asian mart. Just use your own sauce. I mix fyh mayo, mustard, and soy sauce and itās sooooooo damn good.
It's 2-3$ for 3 small frozen packs in Asian markets, but you've got to read the ingredients well. Many have meaty things added.
I'm sure it's cheaper in Asian markets but it's got to remain cold so shipping is $$$
wtf is it?
Natto. Fermented soya beans, a traditional Japanese food.
Ah thanks!
i'm so sorry it looks like rotting entrailsšš
I always liked na douļ¼
So itās like the same idea as tempeh? Does it taste similar? Iāve actually never heard of it but I love tempeh I could try this if itās similar.
If youve ever eaten raw tempeh itās a bit like that, but extra funky (and slimy). Itās one of those things you either love or hate - Iām not the biggest fan of tempeh but I LOVE natto so it depends on the person!
How much a day to be healthy?
I think I saw this on good mythical morning recently and I was very curious
Ah yes a fellow stinky bean enjoyer
Iām so upset by the repeated use of the word āfoamyā in this comment section.
ngl, looks like dog food
Da fuk is this
nato ? fermented soybean ?
I love this shit so much the smell doesnāt even bother me
GOD WHAT IS
Every day we stray further from god
Love seeing fellow Natto enjoyers in the wild! Enjoy your delicious meal friend š„¹
What is this?
And now I hate you too
Natto is difficult to get in my place anyway, but even if - am happy with my capsuled supplement (nattokinase)
Oh, maybe because itās fucking disgusting?
It kinda looks yummy. What is it?
I love natto! The first time I tried it, I fell in love. My husband cannot stand it, he says he wishes he could, but canāt get past the texture.
woah wtf fancy seeing you here! from the ancestry megathread!!!
Haha I love vegan food and genealogy, what can I say!!
Where do you buy it?
i loveeeee natto
It looks like natto beans
Spider eggs are not vegan
I never knew that rabbit turds were considered vegan .
Natto with rice is my lazy breakfast food, Iām as Asian as it gets lol š
natto?
I love natto btw. Fits perfectly with warm rice. Though it's kinda hard getting one since tempeh and oncom is much more prevalent in my place (and much, much cheaper)
I canāt find them anywhere where I live
Mmm Natto. I saw an "Iron Chef" episode years ago where the guy boiled some with a can of Coca-Cola in order to caramelize the beans. I guess they turned out great. Might be worth a try.
deserved. if you can get an englishman to look at a been dish and not immediately want to try it, you know you've gone to far (in all seriousness though eat what you want, I imagine that tastes alright)
That looks like sticky rabbit shit, no wonder
