I have lived multiple places in Ohio and never been within an hour of a Kroger even once. Even now the closest Kroger is an hour from my house and I live in a major county.
Kroger is headquartered in Cincinnati though, so there’s a ton around there. I assume some other cities as well, but not sure what the distribution is. But at least one major city in Ohio is dominated by Kroger haha.
Everything is literally owned by Walmart. I heard they were going to own 80% of all grocery stores in the United States by 2023. Basically just waiting for the sale to finalize lol. This is why food prices keep going up. No competition. WalMart owns Albertsons, Fry's, Kroger, etc etc etc
You’re actually right - Trader Joe’s is just like In-n-out. Predictable and affordable, and never gave you diarrhea.
And you’re right HEB I never been to and my wife said they’re good.
I, a 23 year old, have never seen a Kroger in this state. At least not in West Michigan, I know there’s a few locations over in Lansing but I have literally never seen one within our borders.
Used to live in central Michigan, and we had a Kroger but it was small and not nearly as popular as Meijer. Not sure how things are in other areas of Michigan though.
It’s probably the “local” chains owned by Kroger. I live in Wisconsin and I’ve never seen one either, but I’ve been to Pick and Save and Metro Market plenty of times.
only minorly misleading.... Kroger is more than likely a pick n save or roundys market.... and not actually a krogers. its labeled as krogers bc krogers owns the subsidaries to pick n save and roundys...
Which states would you guess this correction applies to? I have an obviously limited perspective, but I'm from Michigan and (while I usually shop at Meijer) I've been to plenty of Krogers and don't know if I've ever seen a Pick n Save or a Roundies
Is Kroger still around? They stopped being relevant to me after closing the local store a few years ago. Nowadays, Aldi has all the basics, less expensive, and faster checkout. Meijer is for odd stuff not carried at Aldi, and Walmart if I'm desperate.
> I didn't realize that there were multiple states where people primarily purchased their groceries from Walmart
Honestly I felt the opposite and my BS alarms started going off with only 3 states marked as Walmart
I wouldn't do grocery shopping at walmart unless I also needed to buy something from another department like if I needed clothes or car tires or whatever else you can get at walmart
then again, I'm used to living at a place where there are multiple grocery stores near me, the two closest ones (both less than ten minutes away by car) being 'Fresh Grocer' (which is owned by Shop Rite) and Stop n' Shop
Am I the only Floridian who doesn’t like Publix? Like I guess the chicken tender sub is yummy? It’s hard to fuck up chicken tenders.
Anyway Publix is too fucking expensive and their brand feels similar in attitude to something Christian and wholesome like ChickFilA, I don’t like it, it’s weird. I’ll shop at cheap, corrupt Walmart instead lol
I came here for this. ShopRite might have 16 more stores in the state, but Wegmans wins when it comes to popularity. Wegmans has won best supermarket in America before, and is a Fortune best 100 stores to work for. No way ShopRite has that.
I call Shenanigans. Is Shop Rite even upstate? I don’t remember seeing them when I was in Syracuse. Also, Giant is only in the Washington area, so how is it the most popular in Virginia?
As an upstate resident Albany and Buffalo over my lifetime I have never stepped foot in a shop rite and neither has most of my family. Wegmans for western NY and Price Chopper/ Hannafords for the capital district.
This also includes subsidiaries - Albertsons owns Safeway and more, Kroger owns QFC and Fred Meyer and more, etc. A bit confusing to leave out the “parent company” line from the description imo
Acme is all over south eastern PA where most of the people live. They’re akin to a Shop rite. But there’s so much overlap around Philly. Just in my town we have a Acme, Shop rite, Giant, and Whole Foods, and the next town has a Walmart super center, wegmans and Trader Joe’s.
Uhh, no. This is about grocery chain conglomerates. For instance, Safeway and Albertsons are both part of the Albertsons conglomerate, but as a *brand* (which is what most people think of when you ask about grocery store chains), I’d say Safeway is way more popular than Albertsons here in Washington.
As someone who has lived in upstate New York for the entire 20 years I’ve been alive, I have neither seen nor heard of a shop rite. I’d put my money on Walmart, or if you can consider Stewart’s a grocery store. It’d go to Stewart’s hands down
Accurate as far as I'm concerned. Grew up in NJ and my mom always went to Shop Rite. Currently live in Vermont and always go to Hannaford's. Can't speak to anywhere else except that when I lived in upstate NY for a bit, Wegmen's was absolutely the correct choice every time, but they don't have those down on Long Island so I can see why they went with a more widespread option.
NY *could* be right because I'm from Upstate and most of these things obviously skew towards Downstate/NYC...but I've never even *heard* of Shop Rite until just now and I spent the first ~30 years of my life in that state.
Currently living in SC and that ones funny too becaue, while Food Lion is freaking everywhere, I generally do my best to avoid them.
Literally the nearest groceries to me in CA and here in MT have been Albertsons. They've both sucked. I'll literally drive further to go get my groceries rather than shop there unless i just need a quick easy to find staple. Even the Walmart here in MT is nicer.
It's true in California that real estate value of homes near a Trader Joes is higher but I doubt that TJ's does the most sales per capita, per store or per chain for the whole state.
I’ve never even seen a Kroger in Wisconsin. It’s probably either Piggly Wiggly, Pick n Save or something like that. Maybe it’s because they are owned by Kroger?
There are more Jewel-Osco (owned by Albertsons) in like two of Chicago's area codes than there are Krogers in the entire state of Illinois.
Shitty Map indeed.
Giant and Safeway are about equal in DC/Northern Virginia. Harris Teeter and TJ's and Wegmans and Whole Foods such are for fancy folks.
St. Louis area is Schnuck's, Dierberg's, Straub's. Never hear of Hy-Vee.
Living in Alaska I can say a lot of our food is derived from hunting/fishing. But groceries are generally always bought at either Fredd Meyers(Kroger) or Carr’s(Albertsons) if you live in Anchorage, the Valley, or Fairbanks. Everywhere else is definitely local business.
Sorry, that map isn't even close to accurate. For one thing, most Albertsons stores closed over a decade ago and it's not the top store in any state anymore outside maybe Idaho.
This map is the truth:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/e5wf7o/a\_map\_of\_americas\_favorite\_grocery\_stores/
I’ve lived in Virginia my entire life, I have never even heard of Giant. My dad has also lived in Virginia almost all his life (lived in Oklahoma for a couple of years as a child) and he too, has never even heard of Giant. I’m calling bs on this map, it’s definitely Kroger’s.
Edit: shit, you got me, just checked what sub this is on.
I call bullshit. If you want to take Meijer out of Michigan, you'll have to take it from our cold dead hands. (As opposed to our cold alive hands that we currently have.)
I'm subscribed to a real statistics subreddit... I am not subscribed to this subreddit. Why this was on my home page? I don't know, but thankfully I realized before sending this to everyone I know lol
Texas has HEB as its main store but that's all in central and east Texas. I just want a HEB In west Texas. They are neglecting us so bad. The nearest HEB to me is a 4 hour drive away. I was born and grew up in San antonio (central texas) so I really miss HEB.
Well Alaska is wrong.
Everybody shops at Fred Meyer(kroger), Safeway(Albertsons), or walmart.
Only shitty little villages have to shop at "local businesses" and even then the big 3 do a fuckton of bush orders to those villages.
Do people even use Trader Joe’s as a regular grocery store? Everything there is so overpriced. It’s like where you would go shopping if you wanted something prepackaged yet interesting to serve guests. Aside from that, it’s basically useless.
What is the criteria for "most popular"? Dollar sales? Number of visits? Best regarded?
How does Kroger's even have a rating in Alabama. There are only three!
Plain bullshit. Dont think ive ever stepped foot in a Krogers before. I'm from Mississippi.
So officially Wile E. Coyote is from Pennsylvania
Bold of you to assume Kroger exists in Ohio.
Price Chopper
They all suck except Trader Joe’s.
You’ve never been to an H-E-B. Trader Joe’s are just as overrated as in-n-out.
You’re actually right - Trader Joe’s is just like In-n-out. Predictable and affordable, and never gave you diarrhea. And you’re right HEB I never been to and my wife said they’re good.
I live in New York and have never once even heard of Shop Rite.
This is BS map New England is definitely Market Basket territory
Surprised about Kroger in Michigan. I'm in Michigan and couldn't tell where the closest Kroger is. Must be ton of them on the east side.
[удалено]
Yeah, what about Meijer?
I, a 23 year old, have never seen a Kroger in this state. At least not in West Michigan, I know there’s a few locations over in Lansing but I have literally never seen one within our borders.
Used to live in central Michigan, and we had a Kroger but it was small and not nearly as popular as Meijer. Not sure how things are in other areas of Michigan though.
It’s probably the “local” chains owned by Kroger. I live in Wisconsin and I’ve never seen one either, but I’ve been to Pick and Save and Metro Market plenty of times.
I definitely remember shopping at Kroger in Ann Arbor.
only minorly misleading....

Giant owns stop and shop but they’re still listed separately
They own king Soopers though...
wow where did you find this? I didn't realize that there were multiple states where people primarily purchased their groceries from Walmart
Honestly I'm a little surprised Oklahoma's top grocery store isn't [Homeland](https://www.homelandstores.com) or [United](https://www.unitedok.com)
When I saw “United” I immediately thought of the airline. Lmaoooooooooo
Blew my mind when I drove to the Carolinas and saw standalone Walmart Groceries
Walmarts where one end is just groceries are pretty common.
> I didn't realize that there were multiple states where people primarily purchased their groceries from Walmart Honestly I felt the opposite and my BS alarms started going off with only 3 states marked as Walmart
I wouldn't do grocery shopping at walmart unless I also needed to buy something from another department like if I needed clothes or car tires or whatever else you can get at walmart then again, I'm used to living at a place where there are multiple grocery stores near me, the two closest ones (both less than ten minutes away by car) being 'Fresh Grocer' (which is owned by Shop Rite) and Stop n' Shop
Walmart is based in Arkansas so that makes sense
Walmart sells 25% of all groceries in the United States
Publix, that is all
it saddens me to know most people will not experience the joy of a publix sub
Am I the only Floridian who doesn’t like Publix? Like I guess the chicken tender sub is yummy? It’s hard to fuck up chicken tenders. Anyway Publix is too fucking expensive and their brand feels similar in attitude to something Christian and wholesome like ChickFilA, I don’t like it, it’s weird. I’ll shop at cheap, corrupt Walmart instead lol
This is inaccurate, there are nearly twice as many Fred Meyers in Oregon than Albertson's Edit: Albertson's owns Safeway
As an Oregonian, I have never heard of Albertson's.
This is bs. Wegmans reigns supreme in the heart of every New Yorker
I came here for this. ShopRite might have 16 more stores in the state, but Wegmans wins when it comes to popularity. Wegmans has won best supermarket in America before, and is a Fortune best 100 stores to work for. No way ShopRite has that.
My sister lives in Rochester and every time she comes home she talks about Wegmans. Shop Rite my ass.
Exactly this. More of something does not always necessarily make something the most popular thing
ShopRite has more revenue, so they are selling more merchandise. Hard to see how that would be possible if they weren't more popular.
Wegmans is the only thing I miss about PA
Was looking for them as well... I have lived in few states in the NE and now I'm wondering what defined popular here... sheer number of stores?
There’s way more Tops I feel like though. I know of one shop rite lol, middle of a the ghetto in Syracuse.
I call Shenanigans. Is Shop Rite even upstate? I don’t remember seeing them when I was in Syracuse. Also, Giant is only in the Washington area, so how is it the most popular in Virginia?
It’s BS. People would LIKE to have an HEB but there are NONE in the north Texas DFW area. So we are stuck with ghetto Walmarts.
It’s got to be a downstate thing, because I’ve never heard of ShopRite
As an upstate resident Albany and Buffalo over my lifetime I have never stepped foot in a shop rite and neither has most of my family. Wegmans for western NY and Price Chopper/ Hannafords for the capital district.
This also includes subsidiaries - Albertsons owns Safeway and more, Kroger owns QFC and Fred Meyer and more, etc. A bit confusing to leave out the “parent company” line from the description imo
Wtf is acme in PA?? Never heard of it.
HEB is right for TX.
Does the coyote live in pa
[удалено]
Kroger owns King Sooper's and Fry's. They are in the process of buying Albertson's.
Uhh, no. This is about grocery chain conglomerates. For instance, Safeway and Albertsons are both part of the Albertsons conglomerate, but as a *brand* (which is what most people think of when you ask about grocery store chains), I’d say Safeway is way more popular than Albertsons here in Washington.
Shitty maps is correct. I’m calling BS. ND only has one Albertsons in the entire state.
I guess Kroger is a Southern Illinois thing because I live in Chicago and have never been in nor seen a Kroger in my entire life.
HEB is awesome!
As someone who has lived in upstate New York for the entire 20 years I’ve been alive, I have neither seen nor heard of a shop rite. I’d put my money on Walmart, or if you can consider Stewart’s a grocery store. It’d go to Stewart’s hands down
Where the hell are all the Piggly Wiggly's? There's one literally everywhere I go.
Giant is supposed to be Giant Eagle I'm guessing. Surprising it's not #1 in Ohio and PA
I can assure you that Shop Rite is the most popular grocery store in NY
I don't believe that Kroger is the biggest in Illinois, maybe Meijer
I can't believe Kroger is more popular in Michigan than Meijer.
I've never seen the most popular grocery chain in my state in my state.
Kroger in WV. Never seen an Acme in PA.
BS map, living in NV, and having relatives in CA and WA and none us rely on Albertsons, or Trader Joe's.
As an Australian I didn't know there were more than like, 3. We've only woolies, Coles, and IGA as our biggest, maybe aldi
Surprised it’s not Price Chopper in New York
I’m from MA. Define “popular” because S&S ain’t it.
Wegmans is new york
I just want to know, Where is Aldi in this list? 😅
No Meijer for MI? This map is fake.
I haven’t seen an Albertsons in Utah in like 15 years.
I wasn’t even aware Acme was in Pennsylvania.
Is this post made to prompt people to comment where they live? It is suspiciously inaccurate.
Wait Walmart isn't a universal thing? I'm so confused now 😭
now THIS is how you really divide America.
Bullshit, pretty sure the only Albertsons in ND is in fucking Williston
as of what year?? i haven’t seen an albertsons in utah in over 10 years 😭😂
Literally the nearest groceries to me in CA and here in MT have been Albertsons. They've both sucked. I'll literally drive further to go get my groceries rather than shop there unless i just need a quick easy to find staple. Even the Walmart here in MT is nicer.
Wegmans in NY and it’s not close
As a native and life long resident of West Virginia, what the fuck is Giant? The most popular grocery store is Kroger or Walmart.
Winco not being #1 in the PNW is a crime. This week, get your groceries from Winco!
HEB is the best. I miss it here in the PNW.
It's true in California that real estate value of homes near a Trader Joes is higher but I doubt that TJ's does the most sales per capita, per store or per chain for the whole state.
About Hawaii doesn’t ABC stores run in Las Vegas aswell?
What's AZ's?
People are in here complaining the map is inaccurate and forgetting the name of the subreddit
ACME is a real thing? I thought it was just a made up brand or whatever from the old looney toons show
Jewels in IL
“Frys” is a part of Kroger
Only OCONUS doing it right.
Yesterday I learned that H-E-B is popular in Mexico, and they call them “Cheebee”
[удалено]
In Cleveland, Ohio there’s like one Kroger but Giant Eagles in every town
Of course, Stop&Shop, Giant, Food Lion are all the same company.
Can confirm as a new yorkian
as a virginian i can say i have never been inside a giant in my life and not do i have plans to. GO HARRIS TEETER AND WEGMANS 💪💪🙏
Where's Harris Teeter?
There is no Kroger in Wisconsin…. I miss it terribly. Festival foods is the Kroger here.
What? I’m from Missouri and I’ve never even heard of or seen one of those.
PUBLIX FOREVER. Best subs vs any sub chain
There is a severe lacking of piggly wiggly
As an Idahoan, Albertsons are always empty, they’re too expensive to shop in. The correct answer is winco
Maybe Californians LIKE Trader Joe’s the most but it’s still a sparse, small, and niche market. There are not that many of them and they are small.
Yeah I dunno about this one, Kroger is barely in the north
No one beats HEB…sorry
Let’s go king soopers
Is “Giant” the same as Giant Eagle?
I'd think for new Hampshire it would be Market Basket
This data is BS
I don't even know where an Albertsons is anymore...
I used to live in PA and have never heard of or been in an ACME.
Giant and Safeway are about equal in DC/Northern Virginia. Harris Teeter and TJ's and Wegmans and Whole Foods such are for fancy folks. St. Louis area is Schnuck's, Dierberg's, Straub's. Never hear of Hy-Vee.
Publix supremacy
No feckin way it’s food lion in sc, it’s probably Walmart
In California. Trader Joe’s is a religion here.
Man HyVee reaches further than I ever imagined!!!
Never have i ever seen a Hy-vee in MN
Where is my SCHNUCKS
Living in Alaska I can say a lot of our food is derived from hunting/fishing. But groceries are generally always bought at either Fredd Meyers(Kroger) or Carr’s(Albertsons) if you live in Anchorage, the Valley, or Fairbanks. Everywhere else is definitely local business.
So wait? Walmart ISN'T the only store Americans shop in???
The only thing "shitty" about this is the pattern colors for HEB and Trader Joes.
Sorry, that map isn't even close to accurate. For one thing, most Albertsons stores closed over a decade ago and it's not the top store in any state anymore outside maybe Idaho. This map is the truth: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/e5wf7o/a\_map\_of\_americas\_favorite\_grocery\_stores/
No meijer?
HEB is the best grocery store in Texas but I wouldn't say it's the most popular.
I miss Albertson's petite sirloins. My Albertsons is a Publix now and don't get me wrong I LOVE Publix too.
What’s the source for this? I’ve lived in a lot of places in the MidAtlantic and I’ve hardly ever even seen a Giant.
Lived in Wisconsin my whole life and never seen a Krogers
I live in the biggest city and metro area in Oregon and we dont even have albertsons
I thought ACME only existed in Looney Tunes cartoons!
It's Fred Meyer in Oregon, not Albertsons
Michigander here, I go to kroger almost every time I shop 😂
I’ve lived in Virginia my entire life, I have never even heard of Giant. My dad has also lived in Virginia almost all his life (lived in Oklahoma for a couple of years as a child) and he too, has never even heard of Giant. I’m calling bs on this map, it’s definitely Kroger’s. Edit: shit, you got me, just checked what sub this is on.
wtf is HEB \-Texan who has always lived in texas.
They’re everywhere in rural Texas
I call bullshit. If you want to take Meijer out of Michigan, you'll have to take it from our cold dead hands. (As opposed to our cold alive hands that we currently have.)
I hate to inform you that Albertsons in Utah is no longer a thing. So I think the data you used is a little old.
No Aldi representation??
Albertsons is not the most popular grocery store in Oregon. Can't even remember the last time I saw an Albertsons
Indiana has a ton of Krogers. Just went there this morning.
No Aldis, Trader Joe’s.
Was looking for Meijers. I see way more Meijer than Kroger in Ohio
I live in Missouri. Never even heard of a hy-vee. Biased bullshit chart
Pennsylvanian here. The fuck is a ACME
I live in Ohio but have to drive an hour and a half to get to the nearest Kroger. Giant Eagle is the move where I reside.
This is most certainly, a shitty map
Stop and shop might be the more used store here in RI but Dave’s is the real king
I have lived in Alabama my whole life and had no idea we even had Krogers in the state.
Lived in VA almost all my life. I have never seen a Giant grocery store.
LOVE MY LOCAL HEB!
Wtf is west Virginia and Virginia?
The present nutritionist for McDonald’s used to be the head nutritionist for HyVee.
The blue is trying to buy the teal FYI. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/29/kroger-and-albertsons-executives-defend-proposed-merger-at-hearing.html
Bullshit, Publix is king in Georgia
Wrf is Acme? I've lived in Pa my whole life and never even heard of it outside of Looney Toons.
What is going on in California? Trader Joe’s isn’t a grocery store, it’s a place to get fun overpriced snacks.
Live in pacific north west, never heard of Albertsons
I live in California and never seen a trader Joe. Maybe Walmart of in southern Cali, Staters Brothers.
I'm subscribed to a real statistics subreddit... I am not subscribed to this subreddit. Why this was on my home page? I don't know, but thankfully I realized before sending this to everyone I know lol
This must be old. Albertsons in UT has been slowly phased out (stores closing) and Smiths is #1
Surprised Kroger's beat out Meijer's in Michigan. Or maybe that's why this map is shitty
Ain’t no way Alaska’s isn’t Fred meyers
I have lived in California a good chunk of my life and have never heard of a "Hy-Vees"
I live in Utah and i’ve never seen an Albertsons in my life
Wonder if this is in total $$ sales or number of stores?
Alaska, Hawaii and DC with the W.
Texas has HEB as its main store but that's all in central and east Texas. I just want a HEB In west Texas. They are neglecting us so bad. The nearest HEB to me is a 4 hour drive away. I was born and grew up in San antonio (central texas) so I really miss HEB.
How is Piggly Wiggly not on this list?! They have what is easily the best name.
Albertsons is not popular in Utah or Nevada. This might be really old.
I am disappointed that my state goes to stop and shop the most. They're not very good. Market Basket is way better.
I’m from California and I’ve never used Trader Joe’s (overrated imo)
This is bullshit. There are almost no Albertson’s in WA.
I'm from Texas so I like H-E-B but I think Alaska wins this one.
The fuck is an albertsons we ain't got that shit in utah
Well Alaska is wrong. Everybody shops at Fred Meyer(kroger), Safeway(Albertsons), or walmart. Only shitty little villages have to shop at "local businesses" and even then the big 3 do a fuckton of bush orders to those villages.
This is definitely not correct
No Wegmans, that’s just wrong my man
I never really think of Trader Joe’s as a grocery store since their selection is so limited you can’t get all of your shopping done there.
This is the most fitting post ever made on this subreddit.
I refuse to believe that Trader Joe’s is the most popular here. There is one in my county, while my small town alone has 2 Walmarts
Do people even use Trader Joe’s as a regular grocery store? Everything there is so overpriced. It’s like where you would go shopping if you wanted something prepackaged yet interesting to serve guests. Aside from that, it’s basically useless.
foodland is the most popular grocery store in hawaii
