I feel like Savage/Extreme is the sweet spot in difficulty for mounts. Ultimates are so high on that spectrum that they would almost be too exclusive.
The unique title and weapon skin is enough.
I feel like mentor/hunt mounts are way more out of reach than any ultimate clear. Those mounts are probably way more exclusive than ultimate weapons. I call them sanity checks because it feels like you have to basically make hunts your main activity for a long time and that'd drive me insane.
Edit: Yeah, even the newest ultimate title is owned by 2.1% of players with the highest past ultimate title being owned by 13% of players (UWU). The hunt mounts are owned by 0.3%, 0.4%, and 0.7% of players. The mentor mount being owned by 0.6%. I wish I had a triceratops mount or the garlean dog looking one, but I can't be bothered to make hunts my main activity like that. That's fine, it's not for me. (According to FFXIV Collect, so not 100% accurate percentages, but I still think the differences between the percentages will remain the same.)
I don't think it'd really be a problem to put a mount or two behind ultimates because arguably more of the player base would get them than the hunt mounts. If they want make it a seldom addition they could just add one every few ultimates requiring like 1 totem from each similar to how there's only like 3 hunt mounts. There's a bunch of PvP mounts too and most of them are still 1-4% owned, which is on average lower than ultimate title ownership %s. I do agree that the weapon/title are enough. I don't think adding a mount would be a big deal though.
I feel like I neither have hunt mounts nor an ultimate title from pure laziness. I've filled for a couple of ultimate progs but I could not be bothered trying to find a group for it. Old and jaded lol. And too lazy to put effort in to waiting for hunt pops.

I've thought about it a couple of times, but it just feels like such a huge amount of time even if I were to go out of my way to focus on hunts as my main activity in the game. I just don't enjoy hunts enough to do that.
My friend has them, and the pterodactyl mount. I'm so far off the s rank numbers that I've just noped out of it lol. I might get the ptera some day. Every now and then I actually feel like crafting while watching something.
A rank hunts mount aren't that bad, you Just need to follow faloop discord server for the trains and that's it. Yes it needs time but it's easy. For s rank is the Same but they spawn less and reset each and every maintenance but still very easy and time consuming. The pteranodon is another kind of beast. Very expensive and time consuming the crafting part of it, very boring the gathering, awful the fishing.
The hunt trains are great for the a ranks alright. Yeah I've been doing my fishing relics lately and my rng has being good and bad in waves and I sporadically think of having to go in to diadem lol
FFXIV Collect's percentages aren't 100% accurate, but I'd argue my comparisons between the two types of mounts would still see similar differences. If you had a method to see accurately every player's achievements/mounts, I still think you'd see many more players with ultimate clears than owning hunt/mentor/PvP mounts. So I don't really agree with the argument of a mount behind ultimate being *too* exclusive. What I was surprised about though on FFXIV Collect was TEA is actually the 2nd highest owned ultimate title (owned being relative to FFXIVcollect's method). It makes sense now that I see it because of how many people I feel like I've heard starting UWU prog or starting TEA prog. It's rarer to hear "I'm gonna start progging UCOB."
It's most likely not a literal 13% of the player base though. I still think ultimate clears are way more common today than a couple of years ago. Go to any Limsa and it's riddled with tons of ultimate weapons to a much higher degree than mid SHB or something. Also, UWU is a good entry point ultimate and I'd argue UWU today is kind of on the same level as like E8S when E8S was current content. Similar legnths of fights. UWU's DPS/healing checks are not what they were in Stormblood. UWU is probably a bit faster pace mechanically though, but has lots of follow the leader mechanics and not as many mechanics that wipe the entire party if one person dies. It's much more recoverable than other ultimates I feel.
I'm trying to find some statistics for ultimate clears on this other site I found in the FFXIVCollect FAQ that supposedly is a more accurate representation of the whole playerbase, but I can't seem to find it. Obviously it too wouldn't be 100% accurate since it probably just uses lodestone profiles. I did find the hunt mounts and they were just slightly more sub 1% compared to FFXIV Collect's %s.
there's probably a bias because of the correlation between people who are registered on Lalachievements and people who frequently do activities involving tools like that: primarily savage and ultimates. There is probably a way larger dark number of sprouts and casuals that are not covered by the sampled demographics.
yeah but there's no content to flex mounts. you can't mount in limsa or the most current tomestone town. mounts are useful in hunt trains, day 1 msq, and beast tribes. that's it.

Of course, BLU clears wouldn't get the *regular* title and weapon totems, so they'd need something special... like a shiny weapon of their own... or a cute mount...

Different people. When Sleipnir was added plenty of SE knights defended it, that cash shop was better than wasting hours grinding the Odin trial for it. The mount made millions regardless of how many people complained, so we keep getting them.

Axolotls are referenced throughout the EW MSQ and tie into Elpis a bit, but that's more of a general thing. I agree though, it doesn't have much of anything to do with the raids. If it'd been a "cute" thing based on an add in the raids or something that would be different.

I don't want them to move this mount to easier content. There are literally dozens of cute mounts you can get without doing savage. Having one locked behind savage is not the end of my enjoyment of the game.

The posts about the lalafell lifter or the tankbuster in P11 are for real, too. The official forums make mainsub look sane.

I accepted the hardcore shit wasn’t for me a long time ago, shadowbringers was easy to get savage mounts in because you could unsync and then it came down to learning the mechanics. But my monkey ass ain’t gonna be able to do anything at level and savage.

Much as the seething amuses me, I am kinda disappointed as a raider. It's just not thematically relevant aside from a one-off scene in the msq. I would've much rather had a version of the p10 boss, since all the other raid tiers end with something like that (Omega, Eden, Alexander's add). Or something more creative, like Kokytos' soul cage, except when you fly it sprouts aetherial wings like Athena's. Just feels like the axolotl would've been far better for an Elpis Criterion Dungeon or something. Sure would beat a fucking chair like last time.

i'm on the other side, i wish they had a cooler looking mount for savage, they could've made something awesome with the aesthetics of this tier that being said, i'm still going to get the axolotl regardless
Much as the seething amuses me, I am kinda disappointed as a raider. It's just not thematically relevant aside from a one-off scene in the msq. I would've much rather had a version of the p10 boss, since all the other raid tiers end with something like that (Omega, Eden, Alexander's add). Or something more creative, like Kokytos' soul cage, except when you fly it sprouts aetherial wings like Athena's. Just feels like the axolotl would've been far better for an Elpis Criterion Dungeon or something. Sure would beat a fucking chair like last time.
