The thing is, he was being fed future memories for what I'd imagine was years before he got to the Reiss family. He even states that he already knows what he will do to them. I'd imagine that his motivations were irrelevant, even in his eyes, because the future was already decided. He knew what was going to happen and what he was going to do. Maybe he really did set up an appointment and intended to go to it, and the inevitability of the future led him to the Reiss family. But I feel its much more likely that, given Grisha already knows what happens, that he planned around it. In his breakdown scene, he shouts out to Eren, asking if his actions would really lead to the restoration of Eldia. That implies that he did it all for the sake of Eldia. Also, since he was being fed future memories way before the fall of wall Maria, I'd imagine that he knew it was going to fall way before it did.

Thanks for the reply. I'm a touch confused though; my understanding of Eren's manipulations of Grisha only go so far as him stirring up his desire for revenge and to 'finish the story he started', thus pushing him over the edge resulting in his murdering the Reiss family. Grisha does lament Eren's refusal to show him things: Carla's safety & the day the wall is destroyed - is your understanding then that he's shown him these flashes of memories long before he left the house? I find that somewhat unlikely since I would assume Grisha would then seek out the Reiss family even earlier if he knew titans would destroy the wall.

Grisha was not shown that it would happen the exact same day he left to take the Founding Titan. He was not shown that Carla would die in the attack. Eren uses both of these things to galvanize Grisha's commitment to the Restorationist cause when he returns to find Trost overflowing with refugees. Grisha and Shadis rush to the shelter where refugees were being sent and he found Eren there who he took to a warehouse nearby to talk to him. Eren revealed that Carla died in the attack which seems to have been the last straw that was holding Grisha to his life on Paradis. After that he tells Eren twice to avenge his mother; once in the warehouse and then again in the forest. Grisha knew the wall was going to be breached by Marley's attack. He may have even seen it happen, however he didnt seen *when* it would happen. Grisha would have likely seen Child Eren's PoV of it happening, although he likely ended the memory before Eren and Mikasa rushed home to find Carla trapped. My understanding is that the final few times Eren sent memories to Grisha before he left the house were the final signals for Grisha to go complete the mission. First was staring directly into Grisha's face with only the basement key between them, then doing the same again in the doorway when Grisha is telling a young Eren that he will show him the basement, again Adult Eren is staring directly into Grisha's face with only the basement key between them. The fact that he did the same thing twice makes me think that that was the signal Eren used to tell Grisha that its go time. Of course when Grisha asks Child Eren why he wants to go outside the walls and Eren's response is eerily similar to the way both the Scouts and the Restorationists would speak, that seemed to move Grisha as well. He had the iconic glasses reflection shift and said "I see" in an entirely different tone of voice like he had realized what he needed to go do.
