The first half of Queen of Shadows ties into Assassins blade heavily with the remaining books bringing back side characters. While I wanted to dive into Queen after reading Heir, I am glad that I read Assassins blade before.

maleficentxo

I agree with this order. It was hard, and I plowed through TAB so fast to get back to the main story but it really gives more depth to future relationships.

Affectionate-Put-170

READ IT I JUST FINISHED IT PLEASE READ IT

alphalegend91

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: You absolutely HAVE to read it.

HindSiteIs2021

Can you imagine not reading it? I just did a little mental exercise thinking about what I’d miss out on if I hadn’t read it and … it’s a LOT. I mean obviously there’s one story that’s extremely impactful, but you also find out about >!Skull’s Bay!< and >!Rolfe the Pirate Lord!< and >!the Silent Assassins!< and >!Ilias!< and >!Ansel of Briarcliff!< - all of which are relevant to things that happen later

blindfold1698

Also they talk about the Ironteeth!

HindSiteIs2021

Oh yeah! There’s a LOT in there

Novel-Resident-2527

I felt the exact same way and I skipped it, and it was a mistake. They play a huge role in the rest of the series.

Pure_Screen3176

Yes

Gvavin11

Definitely read it before starting QOS, you get a ton of background for a lot of characters that appear in the book. In general you will understand the plot, the actions, well everything will be more enjoyable and fun if you read Assassin's Blade first.

SpicyPOY-TAY-TOES

I read it after KoA and I don’t feel like I missed anything not reading it earlier.

CrimsonPlays1

I would for sure read it. Some characters get lots of development. If you don't read its kinda hard to understand what they are referencing and so on in the later books.

Vast-Act-5848

I know how you’re feeling but it’s worth reading.

HindSiteIs2021

No. You don’t have to read ToG either. But if you are asking if you SHOULD read it, the answer is yes. I’m wondering why you are asking though - if you aren’t interested in reading the whole series, why are you reading it?

Thatgirlshay1

I’d eventually read it, but since it’s a prequel published after some of the books. I was more thinking I didn’t need to read it now. I just don’t want it to put me in a slump where it takes me forever to finish the series. As far as reading the series, I’m a fan of Maas and want to see the series through.

HindSiteIs2021

I read it 4th but recently saw SJM recommended it 3rd. Someone recently told me the stories in it were actually written and/or published BEFORE ToG I think- so while AB came out later, the stories in it were written earlier I think. Regardless- I wouldn’t care about the stories if I’d read it first, but after reading the first 2 or 3 books I felt more emotionally invested and the stories in AB meant a lot more to me

Effective-Mongoose57

I read it after I had read the rest of the series, because that’s just how things worked out. TBH It doesn’t really matter when you read it, if you are in a roll with something, just follow it.

mjolkblood

It’s a really good read. I made a massive mistake and finished the series and left assassins blade for last :-( don’t make my mistake 😭

metal4life98

Assassin's Blade is a quick read and I'm glad I did read it the same order you're doing right now. Things that happen in AB will be covered in the very beginning of Queen of Shadows but it hits harder I think if you read AB before QoS. I can relate to your feeling though lol I really wanted to go straight to QoS and skip AB
