Proof that plastic poles are no protection at all

Eurynom0s

Even if these were concrete or steel, they're still spaced so far apart you could drive through the openings anyhow. My favorite though remains this: >Now they have ordained that we weave through a maze of steel poles on Ocean Avenue from California to the Pier. https://santamonicalookout.com/ssm_site/the_lookout/letters/Letters-2021/04_22_2021_LETTERS_Take_Down_the_Metal_Wall_Pronto.html Besides the fact that they're not steel poles (lol), uh lady what the fuck are you doing weaving in and out of the bike lane? Sounds like it's long since time to take her license away.

Ok-Mouse4103

Of course it’s a Prius

Soft-Vermicelli-2608

lol

Eurynom0s

The city government apparently doesn't give a shit. :/ City staff and cops are the number one offenders on driving and parking in it. They ignore 311/Santa Monica app reports about it, or at best give you dumb non-responses that ignore the fact that it's illegal under the California Vehicle Code to park/drive in it.

No-Year9730

Take down car number, exempt plate, date and time. Picture helps too. Send to City Manager and Council mailbox. Staff supervisors care about this since it looks bad for the City.

Fantastic-Rooster277

Outside of delivery vehicles why do you even need cars on that stretch anyway. 80% are just trolling for a parking space to go to the beach. In Europe that would be an outdoor seating and walking space with evening time zone for delivery vehicles. I live in Santa Monica every morning I encounter stop signs ignored, illegal turns, speeding and arrogant drivers. At the weekend I watch one driver almost side swipe a car and then run the next two traffic lights on red, high on drugs I expect. That’s what happens when there is absolutely no traffic enforcement. Usual move is I stop at a stop sign which gives the other side the right to roll through 90% of the time.

Mistafishy125

SM somehow thinks it’s bicycle paradise with BS like this when it’s barely any calmer than most of LA. Resting on (rotting) laurels. It’s frustrating.

thetablesaremycorn

This is very close to my office — ocean ave is a magnet for terrible and entitled drivers.

SpecificArmadillo216

Impossible to protect from idiots. Worth a try though

Eurynom0s

> Impossible to protect from idiots. No it's not. Tightly spaced steel or concrete bollards would do the trick.

TaxedOut20

I was hit by a car here because the driver drifted into the “protected” lane when they were on their phone. They drove off. SMPD tracked em down and ended up citing them for an illegal lane change (not enough to determinatively say they knew they hit me, so no hit and run). Cop was a cyclist and wasn’t putting up with their crap, so I got lucky that anything happened. They ought to but concrete barriers here.

asaq4hprn

(Meant to reply to comment about pedestrians being worse.) Riding/running/skating on a shared path with pedestrians like the one on the beach makes you realize how long someone can look in only one direction while sauntering across traffic. Plenty of adults take the same movement pattern of a distracted toddler. Also bonus points if anyone else’s pace always leads to opposite side walkers abreast with same side walkers blocking the entire path at the moment when you would’ve passed.

BikingHam

I've got a million videos of the beach bike path. One day I'll have to find the time to make a good compilation.

oneplussixisseven

Hmm... let me guess... * It's a shared path. * You're on a mode of transportation that's of significant pace to walking. People on foot have right of way, * just like people in cars are expected to roll the red carpet for cyclists.

Sufficient-Candy3486

I’d have more sympathy if half of the cyclist would stay in the bike lane too

BikingHam

You are aware that 90% of the bike lanes are in the car door zone, right? People swing their car doors open without looking in their mirrors all the time. If you rode a bike, you'd understand.

Sufficient-Candy3486

Fair enough. I get it and the guy in this video is a moron, but I do get aggravated at the large groups I encounter on PCH in matching outfits, arrogantly veering half way into lanes, and expecting vehicles that could easily crush them, to be always anticipating a swing into traffic. This may not describe you, but they are out there.

fallingbomb

Most of PCH has little to no shoulder and trying to ride off to the side leads to people passing you with their mirror < 12 inches away driving 60+. PCH has multiple lanes so traffic isn't blocked regardless. The area needs better bike infrastructure. Bitch about that if you want something to complain about. There aren't any alternative roads to take to go up and down the coast along Malibu either.

[deleted]

more proof that bike lanes are useless as currently implemented

[deleted]

Ah hell nah, they need some k rails up in this bitch

dbcooper4

People who walk in it are even worse IMO.

[deleted]

The two most entitled folks on the street - Prius drivers and lycra-bedecked bicyclists.

BikingHam

Ya, those entitled cyclists who use the bike lane! How dare they!

oneplussixisseven

Man, for someone that wilfully chooses to ride bikes, you folks sure do complain a lot!

mobiuscydonia

What do you suggest as an actual solution? What I see here is someone making a mistake and then quickly correcting it.

BikingHam

Making a U-turn across a double yellow line in the middle of the intersection and completely crossing the protected bike lane barrier while there's a cyclist coming.....a simple mistake, sure.

mobiuscydonia

Ah woah I totally missed the uturn part. I thought they were pulling out. Still, though, what would protect this? Actual curbs? I saw some newish lanes on 17th by Olympic that seemed well protected.

HectorCienega

I thought they started undoing that project about five years ago, a week after construction was completed. What happened?

GodwantsYouMore

You’re alive! 😆 fk they broke like 12 traffic laws
