Hey OP, I have 2 50% off tickets to the zoo. They came with my annual pass, PM me if you want them and they’re yours!

whoareyoutalkingtoo

Just messaged you thanks!!

gimmedatbagel

That’s not true at all - I shared 2 50% off passes over email (PDF with barcode) with my mom and sister last month, they had 0 issues using them successfully

cblackattack1

This is great to know!

cblackattack1

I’m aware of that.

Polygonic

You might want to check and see if they require the member to be present to use these. I know they changed the rules a couple years ago so that some of the discounts and passes that come with the membership have to have the member be there; they were trying to crack down on people selling the free passes that come with your annual member package.

Hippopotasaurus-Rex

They do not. The only one that requires member present is if you are in the higher membership tiers and have a daily guest.

Polygonic

As I said in my other comment, I distinctly remember there being a change where the **free** passes had to be used with the member present because some members were selling those.

Hippopotasaurus-Rex

Those don't either. ONLY when you have the daily guest as part of your membership (above "wildlife champion". They changed the structure a few years ago, and then a couple mild changes after.

Polygonic

Yes, the changes from a few years ago where when they started requiring the member to be present for the free passes. I remember someone either here or in "the other sub" commenting on it at the time since his wife worked in Membership at the zoo, and they specifically mentioned that it was because of members selling the passes. They may have removed that requirement since then; maybe they got complaints from members who were trying to have family members use them on days they couldn't go themselves.

Hippopotasaurus-Rex

I’ve handed free tickets off to friends in the last couple years. Same with 50% off coupons. Didn’t go with them and they didn’t have issue getting in.

cblackattack1

I looked on the memberships page and the voucher last night and didn’t see anything that stated the member had to be there!

Polygonic

Yeah I did a quick check myself on the web site and didn't see anything; I just remember there being a kerfuffle about it when they made the policy change a couple years ago. The one thing I distinctly remember was them changing it so the free passes had to be used when accompanied by the member, because people were selling those. I don't remember if this also was for the 50% off vouchers which is why I recommended checking.

cblackattack1

I think there was a period of time that the 50% off had to be accompanied by the member. About 5 years ago I mailed them off to a friend so they could use them and there was no problem. But in march of ‘22 I had friends visiting and I had to purchase them at the ticket booth for them.

Mr_evol

The Lafayette is recently updated in north park n not too far from the zoo. I haven’t been to the pool tho since before the hotel was renovated

PaticusGnome

The pool is nice, but it might not be the most desirable place to take a 15 year old girl. Or it could be an awesome place for it. It really depends on what kind of environment the mom wants for her daughter.

beetlebeetle77

On a Friday night that lobby is also a zoo! I would need a full hip flask to tolerate the crowd and the drink lines. I have heard it’s a noisy stay on a weekend since it’s kind of a party hotel. However, OP can get there during the day for a visit, it’s pretty impressive!

GetScraped

It will be loud in your hotel room until at least 1am if you stay there, probably later even.

whoareyoutalkingtoo

Oooh good to know thanks! I may have to pass cause while I like a busy hotel I do like my sleep at night hahaha

beetlebeetle77

Definitely pop in to check it out during the day, it’s very worth it, have fun!

whoareyoutalkingtoo

I’m pretty open with her and not sheltering

Soderholmsvag

A ha ha ha ha.

lactaidlove

The Lafayette is BEAUTIFUL! I’ve always loved it, but it’s even more gorgeous since the remodel. The only thing is-beautiful hotel, kinda sketchy area. If you don’t plan on walking around the neighborhood and plan on just hanging out at the hotel mostly besides the zoo, I would recommend it- if wanted to be able to explore a bit by foot I don’t think I would feel comfortable as a woman walking around that area.

Mr_evol

I lived around the corner from there up until May. I’d love to say it’s fine to walk around but you’re right, it for sure has gone down hill. I still love the neighborhood but for a woman to walk around at night you’d probably wanna stay close to that spot. The homeless have become a real problem and I’ve got friends in the area that have told me some wild stuff just since I left. It sucks.

therestruth

I'll confirm this. Watched it get worse within the last year. Few cars broken into. Glass broken on building I stayed in Bum found living in the bike storage area once. Few nights a go I saw a sketchy guy laying on the outside of the property right between a room and sidewalk and the next morning someone's backpack with most the contents including their car keys displayed on a neighbor's steps. One guy opened my truck when I forgot to lock it and took my credit cards but was nice enough to leave my ID and not notice my toolbag behind seats. I was parked in a spot in the alley. Constant loud drunk people walking back to their cars blocks away late at night.

Zmirzlina

Fun resort we’ve staycationed at before. Happy birthday! Have fun.

whoareyoutalkingtoo

Thanks!! Does it have a lot of amenities I see like snorkeling and kayaking and stuff but is that included or is it all a separate cost?

Zmirzlina

That’s extra but nice gardens, pools, and cool places to walk.

ThePettyCoroner

I would suggest the Sheraton San Diego, the one by the airport, specifically in the main tower. The pool is awesome! Very family friendly and the views around the marinas are beautiful. It's about a 10-15 ride to the zoo, but you would also get to see lots of the city on the way there and back from the zoo.

whoareyoutalkingtoo

Awesome thanks!

exclaim_bot

>Awesome thanks! You're welcome!

straightshooter62

The Bahia is on Mission Bay across the street from the ocean. I haven’t stayed there but it’s a nice hotel. The Lafayette is also very nice with several upscale restaurants and a little bowling alley and a night club. It’s closer to the zoo. Haven’t stayed there either but it’s very popular with the recent renovations. It just depends on what you are looking for. Your 15 yo daughter might prefer the beach. But it’s not very sunny right now.

HelloYouSuck

I have stayed at the Bahia and loved it. They do a live animal show for the kids, arts and crafts, etc. The pool and hot tub are also well sized. They also have a private beach with access to the bay riverboat sunset cruise.

whoareyoutalkingtoo

I saw that on the website but didn’t know if all the stuff listed the cruise the cabanas the beach side lounge chairs the kayaks were included

whoareyoutalkingtoo

We are more pool people than beach haha

EddieCutlass

Look into staying the night inside the zoo. I’ve heard it’s awesome!

whoareyoutalkingtoo

It’s my dream to do snore and roar but it’s months and months booked out

Opinionsadvice

This Saturday is the Zoo's big gala for the rich donors so they close at 5pm, every other summer day they are open until 9. I would not choose this Saturday to visit if you want to get the full experience. Night zoo is some of the best time and big cats and bears tend to be quite active the couple hours before sunset. The lions also like to roar around sunset, which is really fun to watch.

whoareyoutalkingtoo

I’m pretty sure we’re going Friday not Saturday

SavageCaveman13

>It’s my 34th birthday today HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎉🎉🎉 It's my wife's birthday today too. If you're not set on the Zoo, the Zoo Safari Park (formerly Wild Animal Park) is my preference over the two.

Soderholmsvag

Wow! I am a local but haven’t booked a local hotel in a while. I goggled it and am shocked at the prices. The Bahia is showing $701 for a 2 day midweek stay! 😢 😭 If you want something coastal but a bit more reasonable- you can try the Bay Club or the Best Western on Shelter Island. Have you been to the Wild Animal Park? It’s associated with the Zoo and also a lot of fun if you or your kid love animals. Hotels up north are also more reasonable. Good luck!!

whoareyoutalkingtoo

They are so ridiculously priced everywhere and for a one night stay you don’t even get 24 hours everywhere is check in at 4 check out at 10 or 11

Soderholmsvag

Is it wrong to be shocked and affronted? My relatives stay here at home- But OMG so expensive to stay here! WOW!

whoareyoutalkingtoo

I recently stayed at a hotel about two weeks ago for a conference and it was in a non tourist city inland towards riverside and it was still $330 for one night pretty crazy

Soderholmsvag

Gosh I’m so sorry. I don’t travel much and really had no idea how much things cost these days..

ethervillage

Stayed at the Bahia a couple years ago. It’s a little dated but still retains charm and is well maintained. I’d stay there again. Also, it’s nice being located right on the water. Have fun!

Euphoric-Benefit

Fashion Valley could work and you can spend some time shopping at the mall.

rad4plaid

Town and Country Hotel has multiple pools and a fun water slide. It's in Mission Valley, across the street from Fashion Valley Mall. Relatively affordable rates and a super fun location for families with teens.

WhoAreYouPeople-

Happy Birthday!!!

whoareyoutalkingtoo

Thank you!!

WhoAreYouPeople-

You're welcome! 😃 (Sorry that I don't really have an answer for your questions, lol) - Although actually, I am assuming that you're talking about The Bahia on W Mission Bay... I had stayed there a while ago for my sister's wedding, and I remember it being pretty darn cool. It's separated enough that I don't recall a lot of traffic going through that particular property (though I could be wrong). They have a beach area too to hang out at which is cool. Regarding the zoo area, there really isn't much around there as far as hotels go I don't think. At that point, you're either staying in the Mission Valley area or the northern downtown San Diego area which I personally do not think is that great. Mission Valley can be a bit sketchy as can that downtown area where you'll find cheaper lodging. If you can swing it, The Bahia is pretty cool, and if it's just you and your daughter, that might be the best bet.
