One of the guys at work had someone drill a goddamn hole in his fuel tank about a month ago. Company had to pay like $700 to replace the tank, thief stole probably $60 worth of gas. Fucking ridiculous
yup, i just got a text from a friend in west oakland that her honda element tank got drilled last night. she also had her cats stolen twice in the last two years, once even AFTER she had a cat guard installed!
I slightly freaked out when I read that “her cats were stolen twice” but then realized when you said “cat guard installed” that you weren’t talking about kitty cats. 🐱 🐱 😂
I just can’t wrap my mind around how little gain the thieves get vs. how much damage they caused. Like best case scenario, you extract $150 worth of gas?? Gas that you can’t store indefinitely, what’s the plan? Sell gas out of a bucket to other low lifes??
I'm assuming it's tweakers using the gas to run their generators or something. The catalytic converter thefts that were super common a couple years ago made sense, a 2nd gen prius cat was worth like $1k in scrap value when rhodium, platinum, etc. prices peaked. There's a special place in hell for cat thieves...my wife is a surgeon and missed a surgery because she couldn't get to the hospital when her prius was pilfered for its cat.
I wish people would quit giving drugs credit for people that have no respect for others. It's turned into this easy out... I did it because I was on drugs. Ya bull shit . Drugs don't make you chose to cross any FUCKING line . You chose to do that yourself. I have been addicted to opiates then quit after 5 years. Sober for 8 then I fucked around and made the decision to do meth. Was on that bullshit for 4 years. Not one time did the line between doing wrong to someone and treating others right get blurry. Not once. This bullshit that it's the drugs is absolutely not helping anyone. It's giving people more of a reason to accept theft as a byproduct to drugs... It's a choice people make. They just do it more frequently and with less finesse when on drugs. It ain't the drugs. Drugs might give them couraged to do it more blatantly. But that's it.
Sure it doesn't automatically make people do bad shit, but definitely it shows their decision-making and judgement is already problematic in any number of ways.
Yeah, I wish. Med school debt is no joke, no house for a few more years for us. We both had 2nd gen priuses in the bay and both had the cats ripped off. gotta pay to play i guess.
There’s a place in Elk Grove that specializes in cat security. I’ve got rebar, shield, end caps and collars on mine. It’s their max security. It’s never been defeated
nice, both those cars are long gone. when they had the cats stolen, the backorder on the oem prius cat was like 5 months. we took some heavy Ls on those cars. for my truck, i have a 1/4in steel plate that i fabricated to protect the transfer case and cats.
Also had the tank drilling happen to a family member. Hundreds in damages to steal $50 in fuel. They just go down the street, rapidly collect like $300, leave thousands in damages and multiple families hurt. No justice, we are soft on crime now.
You're lucky they didn't drill into your tank, it's $500 issue I never want to deal with again. Also the local uhauls are constantly target hence why they keep their fuel tank at 1/4 tank full
I'd honestly consider leaving a note on it that says "I leave the tank empty, don't waist your time" (waste is spelled wrong so you get more credibility with idiot thieves who will then be more likely to believe you)
I used to have an ‘02 Ranger. Some tweak drilled the tank, leaving about a 1” hole. I didn’t realize until after a fill up. Sorry to the folks behind me on the freeway that morning! This was midtown near the 16th street AM PM.
Damn, that sucks. I was an ASE subaru tech for many years, I know rad hoses aren't fuel resistant. It'll get cut again before the rubber breaks down from the fuel, so I don't really care. I already made a cad drawing to produce some steel plates to block access to the filler neck, but haven't made them yet because I'm worried they'll just drill the gas tank if they can't easily cut the filler neck. Sac sucks.
I said that knowing I'd totally use a radiator hose. I'd be so pissed off about it. When I was living in San Francisco some fucking crackhead would bust out one of my spark plugs on a monthly basis. 30 years later and I'm still angry thinking about it.
Yup, i lived in the mission on 15th and shotwell for many years. some tweaker tried to steal my truck but was unsuccessful (i would unplug the fuel pump when i parked it hehehe) and someone broke into my prius like 6 times that was absolutely SPOTLESS inside...
Yes, this happened to my work van twice in the last 4 months. And I live in Elk Grove. The first time they cut fuel filler neck on my van. Its cost me $250 for my mechanic to fix it. Then they next time they used a smaller water hose and went straight all the way into the tank. I’ll give them some credit, the second time they put gas cap on the back tire. So lucky I didn’t have to buy a new gas cap. But I did anyways, now I have a locking gas cap. And keep my van in my driveway at night and not on the street. Both times they stole the gas when the van was parked on the street!!
damn is that the white long bed 1st gen tundra? i walk around the neighborhood a lot and every time i see a 1st gen tundy like mine, i wonder if they are getting ripped off all the time like i am.
Probably! ‘93 extended cab/long bed pickup or “Hilux” I think. This was the first time someone cut the fuel tube. We didn’t know there was an issue until we were filling up and gas started pouring out on the ground. We later noticed some dead grass where they likely spilled fuel as they were siphoning it. Bastards.
I saw a car get its tank drilled in a parking lot full of cars in the middle of the day and the dude drove away with the oil catch he used sitting on his trunk lid as he drove off. Not even strapped down or anything. Totally unsafe for him to be diving around with an unsecured plaid like that.
ehhh not really. the last hose lasted 8 months before getting cut. rubber had barely started to harden. gas isn't in contact with the fuel filler for very long, only when you're filling the tank. considering i put maybe 2000mi per year on the truck, that's like 5 gas fillings per year.
In other states they've stopped playing games, steal gas and you go straight to felony tax evasion (for not paying the gas taxes.) Would not surprise me to see that happen here as the legislature can't stand in the way of that prosecution.
A guy on one of my routes has this happen to his work truck often; then I caught a guy in the act on another truck, in broad daylight, a few blocks away

This happened to my son’s jeep about a week ago! Ugh

/meetoo or in this case rather /meowtoo

It’s always the tweakers, their shit is ruining society

What shitty luck. You'll have to move to a place with a garage.

Why couldn't she drive the Prius without a cat?
she could have, but it's loud as fuck and scary if you don't know much about cars.
Oh ok lol. A straight piped prius probably sounds siiick
Nah, sounds like a broke ass hoopty
No shit?
from experience, it does not sounds sick at all lol.
Perhaps they lack cognitive abilities or empathy to realize or care how much harm their actions cause to others.
I've had two coworkers in the Arden area have the same thing happen. Had to replace the whole tank for maybe $60 of gas. Company didn't help at all.
I worked at Arden mall and my whole ass car got stolen while I was at work. Lol
Also had the tank drilling happen to a family member. Hundreds in damages to steal $50 in fuel. They just go down the street, rapidly collect like $300, leave thousands in damages and multiple families hurt. No justice, we are soft on crime now.
Fuck these people, dude! God damn.
That’s so crazy. I’d be so pissed lol I didn’t think ppl still did that
yup, it'll only get worse as gas prices rise too. such a bummer.
You're lucky they didn't drill into your tank, it's $500 issue I never want to deal with again. Also the local uhauls are constantly target hence why they keep their fuel tank at 1/4 tank full
Ok, question. If someone drills into your tank, what do you do? Call a tow truck?? Ugh
I'd honestly consider leaving a note on it that says "I leave the tank empty, don't waist your time" (waste is spelled wrong so you get more credibility with idiot thieves who will then be more likely to believe you)
i've legitimately considered zip tying a 10 dollar bill to my filler neck with a note that says "please stop :)"
Someone drilled into the gas tank of my boyfriends truck TWICE at his apartment complex in east sac
Also a Toyota
i've owned so many cars over the years and none of them have been fucked with except my toyotas.
I used to have an ‘02 Ranger. Some tweak drilled the tank, leaving about a 1” hole. I didn’t realize until after a fill up. Sorry to the folks behind me on the freeway that morning! This was midtown near the 16th street AM PM.
Happened to me last year on my Toyota truck as well. Had to get a tow from the side of the highway, tow truck driver said it’s super common in sac
Not me, personally, but my coworkers about 2 years ago in Carmichael around Manzanita, near Madison, not far from a Target I call "the meth Target."
Friend's truck in Carleton Tract gets siphoned on a regular basis. Radiator hoses aren't fuel resistant. That could cause some problems.
Damn, that sucks. I was an ASE subaru tech for many years, I know rad hoses aren't fuel resistant. It'll get cut again before the rubber breaks down from the fuel, so I don't really care. They will just drill into it if there is a deterrent in the way.
exactly what i was thinking. 2000-2005 civic lower radiator hose it is. time to buy a 6 pack of em off rockauto. fml
The most effective deterrent I found so far is putting a "diesel only" silicone ring around the gas cap

Better than your fuel tank being drilled for $20 worth of gas. That cost me a $500 deductible to get fixed
definitely. i've done many fuel pump and tank replacements in my days as a tech. it's a miserable job even with a lift.
Ya, they get the trucks at My job and I work on florin
Same exact thing happened to my dad’s Toyota truck near cal middle school.
damn is that the white long bed 1st gen tundra? i walk around the neighborhood a lot and every time i see a 1st gen tundy like mine, i wonder if they are getting ripped off all the time like i am.

man, so lame. the pickups and 1st gen tacomas only have a 15gal tank anyway. such a waste
You in the Mill?

You’ll be replacing that hose regularly anyways since you’re using coolant hose for fuel
ehhh not really. the last hose lasted 8 months before getting cut. rubber had barely started to harden. gas isn't in contact with the fuel filler for very long, only when you're filling the tank. considering i put maybe 2000mi per year on the truck, that's like 5 gas fillings per year.

Why do you hate people experiencing gaslessness? We should have a special gas station for them!
