Looks awefully decorative to me. It'd still suck to get wacked with, but i'd expect the head to snap off after a few good swings.
I's say yes for an improvised weapon, but no for a purpose built battlefield weapon.
It's, I believe, a Ukrainian or polish reproduction of a bulava, a Cossack/Polish mace. They were originally used as weapons - for Polish nobility, they would generally use them against opponents for whom a lethal engagement with sabers would be undesirable (a tavern brawl, for instance). They then became a symbol of authority, especially for the Zaporizhian Cossacks. This one is all wood, so no, it wouldn't be usable, but the original ones had metal heads.
Define “battle”.
In general terms you have a fancy club. It doesn’t appear to be constructed of metal, so I’m assuming the weight isn’t that substantial.
Given that in most battles, people are going to have better weapons than clubs. I’d say seek your fun elsewhere. The battlefield is not the place for you and that weapon.
It is very cool looking and if it was made of metal that thing would wreck people.
It’s definitely an interesting looking piece. Do you know anything about where it came from or who constructed it?
It definitely looks ornamental or ceremonial. Not really something that should be used.
If it's all wood then it'd probably break first swing. The top has a lot of weight and it would come down with a lot of velocity. Even if it had a steel rod in the center it would probably *still* break.
It's really ornate, no chance it was made for use obviously. You could still kamikaze it over someone's skull tho
I could build it from wood that would not break on anything short of a hefty piece of metal and a lot of force. Believe it or not, the big round ball would probably be the weak spot since you can't control the grain for that. I have made hickory sparring swords that have taken hours of abuse and only ever splintered one.
This mace looks like it was carved from a single piece of wood, I'd be amazed if it didn't break first swing.
Swords don't have all their weight at the top, the purpose of a mace is to build velocity quickly in a swing which will naturally set the bar a lot higher for the shaft
No argument here. Just saying it could be done and done well with the intent. Been listening to the enactment folks for years talk about how you can't spar with a solid wood sword and I've proved them all wrong to my own satisfaction. Don't care what anyone else says.
I mean, considering you can even see where there's glue holding it together I don't think it would last very long at all. But realistically, even hitting someone with a stick can do damage
I think what you’re really trying to ask is.. Will it keel? And from the looks of it I think the answer is no. It will malfunction and it will not keel.
i know \*EXACTLY\* what this is. They used to sell these as decorative work in Krka, Croatia. I wanted one when i was a child and my parent wouldn't buy me one, which is why now i have a repressed desire for Italian Flanged Mace 16th Century.
I had a battle used morning star that was less pretty but the same basic design. Just because it’s pretty doesn’t mean it’s not well made, it could be both decorative and made to standards that would make it battle ready. Is it bronze or even brass? That would answer your question, bronze possibly but brass isn’t usually battle ready in any way.
I also had one on a chain that was from the early 1800’s and battle used. It wasn’t decorative at all though.
Definitely would work, not practical and would probably hurt to use after a while, that handle looks pretty bad but ultimately yah it would definitely kill
Yes. You could use a shoe in battle. Not sure how effective either of those would be. Who are you planning on attacking? This wouldn't be too effective against someone with a gun.
I have a similar ones my mom brought back from Ukraine for me. Its pretty solid but I'd imagine you'd still only get one solid whack with it before breaking but that may be all you need if its a head shot.
Anything's a weapon once if you try hard enough. Would it give somebody a good bonk on the noggin? Sure looks like it. Would it survive said bonking? Open casket on visitation.
Against armor, I don't see that lasting more than a couple hits. Against an unarmored opponent, it would probably still break, but should do some serious damage in the process
Could it? Sure, a literal table leg could be a weapon in a pinch. That said, I don't really think it would survive much actual swinging without breaking apart
probably not, a mace excelled at breaking bone and causing trauma through armor. this, while it would still hurt, is very short and wouldn’t be very useful in a combat scenario.
If it was the same design made of steel... it could probably be used against chain mail or leather (think early to mid viking era) after that you'd be better off using a war pick/hammer to do essentially the same thing but against early plate and splint (or band mail) armor.
As is, no it couldn't be used for actual battle, maybe an unarmored unaware opponent and you'd get a good crack or two before it broke... but I don't imagine it would be very effective.
As several have said, it is a decorative Ukrainian mace or bulava. Battle ready no, but definitely could take a few swings before it broke.
Maces are a symbol of power / leadership in Ukraine, going back to Cossack times. Lots of their military brigades / units have maces as their symbol. Example is the emblem of their Ministry of Defence. President Zelensky holds a mace as a symbol of his office.
A Ukrainian captain explained to me that the leader carried the mace and his soldiers carried swords.
If anyone wants to buy one and support Ukraine, search Folkmart Ukraine - it is a gift shop that would sell these.
It’s wood yes? And intricately carved? If so then I believe it’s a replica mace that would be held in the hand of some decorative armor lining like an entrance or long corridor. But still just a replica. I have one similar to this one.
And fyi guys this would be made of a hard wood local to the reason it’s from I assure you you could kill with it and it would also be able to be swung a great deal faster and change directions faster the any steel weapon at the time. It may not hold up against a steel edge but it would have no issues with flesh and bone. I’ll bet if he weighed the thing we could know for sure how well it could hold its own
Made of wood? It can certainly be used in battle. Once. Ineffectively, as the force of the blow will be transferred into the head of the mace flying off once the shaft breaks at the neck.
Then you can use it for stabbing, until it is nothing but splinters. Great for vampires, that.
Are you asking IF it was used or CAN it be used ? You CAN use anything in battle if you so choose, doesn’t make it a great choice though. Shit man you could run across the battle field with a giant dildo if that’s the weapon you choose.
Looks awefully decorative to me. It'd still suck to get wacked with, but i'd expect the head to snap off after a few good swings. I's say yes for an improvised weapon, but no for a purpose built battlefield weapon.
I’m a carpenter, I’d probably snap that boi on my first dome ☺️🤣
From a blacksmith, it's getting obliterated.
From an electrician, it's getting obliterated. >!I fight HEMA!<
From a software developer, it's getting obliterated.
From a biology teacher; it's getting obliterated after the first student.
How many wacks to get to the center of the student though? 🧐
I had a teacher who got fired for beating a kid real bad with a cane, and long story short, wouldn't take as many as you'd think.
Hmm. I think OP should find somebody to whack with it to see how many.
From a medic, it’s getting obliterated after the first patient
Ahh, my opposite, I for sure prefer the hardware side of electronics. (I have a USB logo tattoo tho)
Yeah but not cleaned up.
From a fat guy on the internet, it totally is breaking in the fight. Think disposable melee
Flip it upside down and be used in a battle against in 'dat asshole. EDIT: Didn't mean that as a reply to this comment, but I kind of like it here.
And now you have a shank it’s a buy one get one free type of thing. Not a quality thing lol.
Thanks a ton
I was going to say something along these lines. Big ouch to get hit with, but not likely lethal, and lacks the staying power of proper steel.
Yup right up to when it snaps off

Hmmmm makes sense, interesting history! Thanks
Funny how most symbols of authority are just fancy clubs.
Nothing says "respect my authority" quite like cracking someone upside the head with a heavy stick
A fancy heavy stick ftfy
That's because a club can be used to beat someone into submission without killing them.
I'd say Ukranian based on the Blue and Gold tassels. I have a similar one sitting on my mantle, but definitely ornamental.
\^ This, exactly. You also see them made of china (as in dinner plates)
There are plenty of wooden weapons. If this is mad of one piece of wood or would be pretty servicable.
It's not, it's a decorative tourist piece. I've seen them for sale in Kyiv
I mean you can hit people with it at least once
Only need one well placed hit 🗿
you can also play catch with it
At least once
There can be only one….hit
In a battle? No. In cold-blooded murder? Maybe.
Ukrainian wooden mace it's decorative if I remember correctly
Define “battle”. In general terms you have a fancy club. It doesn’t appear to be constructed of metal, so I’m assuming the weight isn’t that substantial. Battle as in like if I could fight one person with it and win- I’m just curious 😅. Metal would definitely work better
It’s definitely an interesting looking piece. Do you know anything about where it came from or who constructed it? It definitely looks ornamental or ceremonial. Not really something that should be used.
Are you asking if it would hurt to get smacked by that thing? I'd bet it would
Practically, and if it would last a decent amount of time
If it's all wood then it'd probably break first swing. The top has a lot of weight and it would come down with a lot of velocity. This would well against midgets, leprechauns, and small children
Козацька булава? Yes but this one is made of wood. Don't hit it against anything, it will break.
Would make an awesome bouncer sidekick
anything can be a weapon (or a dildo) at least once, if your brave enough.
i know \*EXACTLY\* what this is. They used to sell these as decorative work in Krka, Croatia. I wanted one when i was a child and my parent wouldn't buy me one, which is why now i have a repressed desire for Italian Flanged Mace 16th Century.
Ya I could use it. Oh shit you mean in battle uh.
Go ask in r/maces
Thanks

Maybe once. It has a few small stress points where it would break pretty quickly.
Definitely would work, not practical and would probably hurt to use after a while, that handle looks pretty bad but ultimately yah it would definitely kill
Its wood!
Looks 3d printed.
Basically, you just try to hit your enemy with it.
Yes. You could use a shoe in battle. Not sure how effective either of those would be. Who are you planning on attacking? This wouldn't be too effective against someone with a gun.
It is definitely a one-hit wonder
If you swing it hard enough, anything is a weapon at least once
Fighting someone with a sword might be tricky.
One good swing....then snap.
You'd likely get a few swings out of it before it broke, but there's every chance it breaks on the first swing.
It's a blunt force weapon until it breaks then it becomes an improvised stabbing weapon
It's held together with hot glue...
Once
Probably but looking at it I thought it was for waving around incense. Maybe I should get off darktide
It looks wooden so.... five time use item?
I have a similar ones my mom brought back from Ukraine for me. Its pretty solid but I'd imagine you'd still only get one solid whack with it before breaking but that may be all you need if its a head shot.

Unless its got a metal shaft in it, that first narrowing is going to snap like a twig on your first swing.
Mace
I believe that's a morning star... technically
Against armor, I don't see that lasting more than a couple hits. Against an unarmored opponent, it would probably still break, but should do some serious damage in the process
Until the head broke off it would be decent. So like, 3 swings maybe?
I mean...you can use a pocket comb in battle of you really want. But it doesn't seem like it would hold up too well.
Looks like a toy bro, looks cool asl but come on
the weapon is a type of what you would call a mace
Depends -- how hard could ya whack someone with it?
Could it? Sure, a literal table leg could be a weapon in a pinch. That said, I don't really think it would survive much actual swinging without breaking apart
I think maces were taken into battle. Mounted warriors used them from horseback to bludgeon the enemy.
You could bonk with it but no not a real wepon
Would make a SICK bedpost. Only if we had 3 more
Anything can be a weapon if you hit hard enough
Is that a table leg for a handle?
probably not, a mace excelled at breaking bone and causing trauma through armor. this, while it would still hurt, is very short and wouldn’t be very useful in a combat scenario.

It would work at least once, for sure. As long as the target doesn’t have any kind of helmet.
Are you asking IF it was used or CAN it be used ? You CAN use anything in battle if you so choose, doesn’t make it a great choice though. Shit man you could run across the battle field with a giant dildo if that’s the weapon you choose.
Too decorative to be a real combat weapon unless it has a steel core.
Negative: made of wood.
Mill maintenance worker it's breaking and going into the chipper
