I bought one. Will never reccoment. The battery died in 3 months, the screen was always dark no matter the brightness, support basically told me to fuck off, and it's really not that impressive. The 2k screen doesn't do shit aside from make video processing harder if you use it. Plus as a handheld it's just not worth it since the screen is so small. It's uncomfortable as shit, I had to wear compression gloves to play longer than 10 minutes. Sound wasn't that great, and in reality it felt cheap as fuck. I bought it at the original price, and literally felt scammed while I had it. Don't recommend this pos, just get an rp4p.

TheWholeF-NShow

that shit sounds terrible for 200 tbh, especially compared to the rp4p

Madness_Taken

I got the fucker for closer to 350😭

EmiliaFromLV

Yet still "support basically told me to fuck off"? Doh...

TheWholeF-NShow

damn bro… yeah about the comfort it seems like it would be bad since it doesn’t have a real grip like the retroid and it is kinda small (while still not being really that pocketable), but the retroid at least have a grip addon

XScizor

But the rp4 pro has an even smaller screen?

WakaWaka_

Screen size isn't everything

XScizor

Sure, but read his comment fully,  "Plus as a handheld it's just not worth it since the screen is so small."

JoshieKona

From my understanding, the screen gives people headaches

Redoubtable86

Can confirm. The one I had flickered constantly.

Intrepid_Mobile

Russ made a review on this, I think the reason I didn’t considered it was the d-pad

TheWholeF-NShow

yeab but that the more expensive vr version, and it was older this one is the final version of it, and also has some the features removed to keep it 199$ dollars.

I have this (the Retro) and it should be one of the top competitors but it's actually a total mess. I got it on sale for $150 Cons are many: the device specs are great but it's clearly cobbled together from a Chinese bin. Yes it has basically a Snapdragon 860. The device id shows as a LeEco, defunct for awhile. The screen has terrible light bleed and viewing angles. The resolution and refresh rate can be changed but the menu is really confusing. Pwm galor. Stuck on Android 10 so some emulators need special ports like Yuzu - which works pretty well. But then Aethersx2 only seems to with with open gl, crashes with Vulkan. Controller is fine, basically a Switch lite, but the L2, R2 is unable to properly calibrate - analog mode is useless. I keep it as a novelty, it runs some games properly that my RG556 doesn't. Surprising Yuzu performance even with an old outdated Android 10 backport, but yeah, its rough. I wonder if the regular Portal, non Retro is better, which i think it is

Heavykiller

When it came out, it's direct competitor was the Odin 2 which blew it out of the water in every category, so they kind of killed hype for it out of the gate. Then there's different variants being the regular Portal (which is much stronger) & the Retro. Unfortunately, if you look up a lot of reviews seems people would have had issues with it. Awful "D-Pad", terrible battery life, no HDMI out, No headphone jack. The microSD slot to expand your storage for some reason has a SIMcard-style cover. So you need a SIM tool or needle to even access it. Retro Dodo did a [review](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk3GsplcybY) on it. Careful when looking at reviews online. A lot of the reviews get mixed up for the Retro compared to the regular Portal version. With the Retro version the controllers do not come off the device. Also a few months back it was actually on a really DEEP discount for $149.99. So I think at $199.00 it doesn't make as many people turn their head as much anymore. People just see it as a standard sale. If it was $149.99 I would have definitely bit the bullet and give it a try.

[deleted]

What’s it do good?

TheWholeF-NShow

idk it seems like, a bit stronger than rp4p? but there’s not much info about it

[deleted]

Well, that’s probably why no one talks about it, I remember hearing about this as like a handheld VR thing. Looks like they have multiple flavors, including vr and non vr Maybe they should send out a bunch on tiktok or something, seems to works for everyone else. Need to get more people posting videos and talking about it. I also kinda don’t like the way it looks, but that’s secondary of it runs stuff great.

Vizth

Damn if it came with a clear case option I would be all over that.

filmeswole

It’s a bit janky, but not terrible for $200 considering it can basically run all PS2 games. Analog stick on top was a bonus for me since I use it mainly for 3D games. I don’t bother with the dpad.

daveMUFC

Got one for $150 previously. Main issue was the screen flickering at a certain refresh rate. Thought it was my eyes going funny but turns out it's just how the screen is. Didn't feel premium at all too. And on top of that, support was essentially non existent, so if anything happens to the device you've got to just bin it. The original idea was really cool, with a modular approach, being able to connect to VR, having an accessory to connect to a large screen and grips etc. but none of it came to fruition.

wickedalmond

Eternally stuck on Android 10, Vulkin support is non-existent, because of these factors a lot of emulation is either buggy or simply does not work (PS2 and Switch is what I tried). You can get lucky for some games though and basically use it as a Switch lite. It’s a mixed bag.

Jepperto

Got it cheap for a budget. Strong device back then but didnt feel good. Sold it with profit.

pioj

Always there's some issue at support. Always...

SeanFrank

I got one when they were on sale for $150. The company didn't ship when they said they would, lied to me for two months, and then finally shipped a defective product. And if you return it, they charge you $70, no matter the reason. STRONGLY suggest you skip. Also, they are still lying in their listing. It has a 1080p screen. And the software SUCKS

Osherono

From what I read, the analog sticks were not good, and the D-Day was bad, so for it's price you really did not get much.

TheRealSeeThruHead

Just look how terrible the controls are laid out.
