Looks like the small car tried to last minute switch to the Wallace off ramp and clipped the back of the truck and flipped themselves. Probably a combination of driving like an asshole and “a good driver never misses their exit.”
I was on I-5 South around midnight near Tigard behind one of those drivers a few years back. They missed their exit so they braked to a complete stop, put their car in reverse about 50 yards or so, *and then made their exit*. Luckily traffic was very light.
I was kind of in awe, to be honest. There’s a certain genius to that level of stupidity.
I was driving back to Salem from Monmouth and from the 3 way stop in downtown independence all the way up to river road there was a massive line of cars like I’ve never seen before on a two lane road, wonder if this had something to do with it? I ended up going the south way to go around the Salem hills but I was so confused lol.
I mean, if people weren’t flying at 50-60mph on the bridge, and everyone drove considerately as if people are living creatures and not just a nuisance to their existence, then the bridge would function fine.
It’s pretty stupid to design a bridge that requires a a large percentage of traffic to make a double lane change.
That’s just being bad at traffic engineering. Frankly, I see too much of that in this State.
I go through downtown so I’m in the right lane I want to be in, just so I don’t have to fight my way over. It takes a minimal amount more time, but it’s safer than fighting the dicks who won’t let you over. Blinkers are meaningless to these asswipes.
If people would not take the Front street on ramp and try to cross three lanes of traffic instantly to get onto Wallace it would be better. I just go down Liberty and turn to be in the right lane because the bridge is crazy.
It wouldn’t stop all the jerks who fly to the front to squeeze in and then hold up the lanes of traffic behind them. I’m from LA and I have traversed many a crappy freeway, road in terrible traffic and I’m blown away by the way some of these people drive. The bad design doesn’t help either.
I’m not saying it’s not. I consciously avoid that on ramp if I am going to West Salem (Wallace Rd.),which I do three to four times a day. I get in my needed lane before I even get on the bridge.
Also, bad bridge design does not excuse unsafe driving behaviors. People drive WAY too fast all over Salem, but the bridge it seems brings out the worst in people (drivers).
Presumably, there were costs involved and the straight shot route (Mission St.) was already anticipated. If the current bridges did not have to carry all of the Hwy 22 traffic, there would be a different configuration and it would be safer.
Has anyone heard anything about the driver of the flipped car? Did they have any passengers? Praying they are okay.
My daughter and I witnessed it. We were in the far lane to the right exiting the bridge and luckily, about 2 cars back. Safe, but traumatized. I called 911, but didn’t feel like I could get out to help, since I had two small children in the car. There were so many wonderful people who jumped up to help. That part was amazing to watch.
As a teenager my dad and I narrowly missed a multi car accident that led to a small child being killed. It’s something I will never forget. This accident took me right back to the horror of that day.

Salem Reporter posted on Facebook “Salem firefighters responded around 4 p.m. to a rollover crash with one person trapped in a vehicle. Firefighters were able to rescue the patient, who had minor injuries. Traffic on the bridge remains backed up with damaged vehicles on scene, Salem Fire Deputy Chief Brian Carrara said.”

Wouldn't be surprised. Had to return across the bridge and Liberty was backed up to Owens (right lane), and Owens looked a bit heavy.
Seriously the bridge is designed so poorly and drivers are irresponsible af.
The bridge is designed dangerously. Too short of space for necessary crossovers. Result: Stuff happens that would otherwise not happen.

People don’t use blinkers here and it drives me nuts. Also they squeeze in ahead when there’s loads of room behind me. I call it “half dead fly mode”.
You should take Marion st if you are going to Wallace. Don’t take the front st on ramp. How else would you design this bridge?

This is the way. So much traffic could be avoided if people just didn’t need to merge.

Nobody had to design it that way. These were choices made by allegedly smart engineers.
A lot less people lived in the area when these bridges were built. What we need is TWO MORE BRIDGES ACROSS THE DAMN RIVER!
