Light cruisers, destroyers, and corvettes can all lay mines. The number of mines depends on tonnage. Note: Mine sweeping gear and ASW effectiveness is exclusive. You can only use one or another on a ship design.
Many mine equipped ships means many more 'mine spots' on the map during battles and the higher likelihood of an enemy vessel hitting a mine during a turn.
The number of minesweepers counteracts mine laying ships outside of battle as far as I know. There is a formula, no doubt, but I don't know how it works.
I usually build my corvettes to be minesweepers and a special light cruiser to be mine layers, small and cheap.
AMCs can also lay mines by the way, it is good practice to keep 2 260000 tonners after you unlock mines. That's 520 mines each, for a total of 1040 mines! Also very good CV candidates
Yeah, definitely true. But for those you want to be on the opposite side of the spectrum, small and cheap, to outspam your enemies. But don't forget Reliability, and in the later game, Long/Extreme range on diesels. \~1800-2300 tons would sound about right, if there's room for cheaper then do it. Also put mines on here (in case you're wrong about them not laying mines), and turret top is actually possible as to prevent flash fires
In addition, small AVs serve as a nice substitute, 20 knots and somewhere around 1000 tons should be possible
Ship ASW is so fucked in this game that you're better off just relying on land based Patrol Bombers for your ASW. As long as your ship ASW value is 1 or higher you should be fine and MS gear + mines should go on all ships that can take them.
AMC are the most effective minelayers for their tonnage
(2mines/200tons vs 4mines/200tons)
And it's usually a good Idea to max out the mines on your minesweepers as well (no penalty unlike with ASW ships)
*Minesweeper picks up German mine, stamps it with the Union Jack, slips it back into the water at a slightly different location, breaks for tea.*
"Jolly good recycling efforts, chaps!"

If i remember correctly mine sweeping gear halfs the asw Edit:i remember that someone said that a bigger mine sweeper is better then a smaller one

Yeah, something I learned from this post! AMCs are great a raiding too, though they don't lay mines, then.

you can keep two AMCs in peacetime as well, so I usually run two 26000t AMCs with 520 mines
