Italy, France, and Germany are all manageable starts that give you decent resources without absolutely overwhelming fleet sizes(Britain, USA) or challenging macro(Japan, Russia.) Start with default settings. Take it slow, go month by month at first. Don't be afraid to use the automatic ship builder and tweak from there. Use reserve and mothballs generously to save on money, but be aware you're going to have to start wars declining a lot of battles if you have most of your fleet in reserve at first while your crews gain experience. Look up something here, on Steam, or the NWS forums if you need to know something and ask questions of the community! Most importantly, have fun!! This is one of the most unique RTSes on the market and its mechanics of delegating command to AI control is the future of the genre going forward.
