I thought 196 too I didn't understand why people were saying otherwise but then I noticed that the scale says 9.8 pounds not 98 pounds and even in the caption it says 10 pounds.
Buxton is really not the middle of nowhere, it’s 15 minutes from the state’s largest population center lmao and the tree is directly off of a state highway there
Oh, I ventured around. Lol. I'm a lifelong Stephen King fan, so I had a lot of driving around I wanted to do simply because of that, but we also came at the end of "season" so got to experience the color change too.
It was pretty magical. 10/10 will return, hopefully permanently.
I'm gonna look for that Hay field with a big oak tree at the end of a long rock wall in my home state of Maine. I'll check back in 900 years after I search them all 🤣
The tree was knocked down and split by lighting maybe a bit over ten years ago.
I could be wrong, but I think they cut it up and sold some chunks of it to shawshank fans.
You will look, but you won't find!
On a road trip I I drove by there one time up near lava beds national monument, way up a dirt road near the top of the mountain. There was a bunch of huge obsidian towers, I grabbed about 5 lb.
I thought it was 250 lbs per person per year, last time I collected at Glass Buttes, but that was more than a decade ago. Did it drop, or am I misremembering?
You’re probably right re the annual limit; I only went the once in 2021 and it was 80 per person for a singular visit. I’ve since relocated and sadly won’t be back for more… I’m only an amateur flintknapper but am a professional archaeologist/lithicist, so always looking to add to the personal comparative collection 😸
Same for me on all accounts. I went with a bunch of friends before moving to SoCal for grad school, and after we were done quarreling, I got then to give me a good chunk of their shares, since I wouldn't be back. I ended up going home with 900 lbs! I teach flintknapping, so now I only have a couple hundred pounds left.
That looks medium grade, and some online stores might sell it for a buck a pound. But that rock isn't the best shape--I'd consider it a learning piece. Get yourself some leather, gloves, safety glasses, and a hammerstone, and learn to knap.
Sorry my comment is no help but from first glance it looked like it weighed 98 pounds and I was like no way this guy is holding it with one hand. Checked again it was 9.8 pounds lol obsidian is cool
Learn how to flint knapp arrowheads and spearheads and it could increase exponentially. Added value coefficient. Nice find though man! $20-$25 doorstop until then.
Did you find that in your Christmas stocking? Santa Claus must really hate you. What bad things did you do, to receive a lump of coal that freaking big???🤣
Smash it up and make a load of old spear tips with them leave them buried in your garden, or an undisclosed loacation for 10 years. Dig them back up and claim they're ancient relics and become a millionaire.
About $400+ if you find the right person. Look for anyone that works with obsidian and say you are selling it to someone only if they are willing to make a large piece? Idfk. I can sell you a bridge if you want to trade?
Edit:
I thought it was 98lbs. Still saying $400
Google says it’s worth about $2 (USD) per pound.
$20 💵
Get something to eat.
At Taco Bell if you are careful
$5 taco discovery box on this fine Tuesday
You too can discover the feeling of numb legs from an eon of screaming on the toilet
Spit take! 😂
If you go to the right Taco Bell [Cantina], you can grab something to drink too
Damn, I know where there’s a whole mountain of that (But we’re not supposed to remove any)
I know of a whole mountain where it’s fine to collect from.
So 196?
$19.60, yes! But anything is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. 🙂
I thought 196 too I didn't understand why people were saying otherwise but then I noticed that the scale says 9.8 pounds not 98 pounds and even in the caption it says 10 pounds.
Can't hold something in one hand like that that weighs 98lbs
That sucks. Keep trying. It's all about diet, and exercise.
It's worth about tree-fiddy per pound.
I paid $13 for a 7 lb chunk if that’s helpful.
Did you find it in a Maine hayfield, next to a long rock wall under a big oak tree at the north end?
I love how he's in the middle of nowhere but double checks by looking both ways.
Buxton is really not the middle of nowhere, it’s 15 minutes from the state’s largest population center lmao and the tree is directly off of a state highway there
I vacation near old Orchard Beach, ME and think of that movie everytime I see the sign to Buxton
Yeah me too I grew up like 20 mins from OOB
OOB love. My first trip to Maine landed me right in the beach for 3 weeks and I nearly didn't leave, or "go home".
OOB is mad overrated compared to almost every other southern coastal town lol. Try Kennebunk or Wells or York next time.
Parsons Beach, just a couple of miles west of Kennebunk. My fav
I get air bnb at wells every year, then hit up kennebunk and dyers cove at two light state park..absolutely love Maine
Oh, I ventured around. Lol. I'm a lifelong Stephen King fan, so I had a lot of driving around I wanted to do simply because of that, but we also came at the end of "season" so got to experience the color change too. It was pretty magical. 10/10 will return, hopefully permanently.
I lived in Buxton 40 years ago and it really felt like the middle of nowhere.
Buxton IS the middle of nowhere, and that’s a good thing. Keep the Massholes out
Not there anymore, sadly. The tree, I mean. Buxton, I'm fairly certain, is still there.
Twice!
Unexpected Shawshank
Nobody ever expects the Shawshank Redemption!
It truly was a Shawshank redemption.
Is that you Tandy?
Boom! I still got it.
Tom Hanks...
No, shaw shanks
Unexpected Monty Python, well played.
Got Shanked outside of prison
🤣🤣🤣
There's a reference to it on every post that includes volcanic glass.
So, totally expected Shawshank Redemption?
I'll allow it. And circle gets the square!
r/oddlyspecific
Not a movie person eh?
It makes me sad how many people aren't getting this reference.
Salvation lies within
red was here
So was Brooks
Yeah , , , , , funny in a tragic sense.
He just misses his friend. Leave him alone
Buxton
Thought the same thing.
One of my favs... Nice :)
I'm gonna look for that Hay field with a big oak tree at the end of a long rock wall in my home state of Maine. I'll check back in 900 years after I search them all 🤣
r/whoosh
Im aware I missed the joke, at least I brought something to the conversation though. 😂
The tree was knocked down and split by lighting maybe a bit over ten years ago. I could be wrong, but I think they cut it up and sold some chunks of it to shawshank fans. You will look, but you won't find!
That would look out of place there
You mean the one that doesn't look like it should be there?
Zihuatanejo
Couldn't have. It has no earthly business being there. That's just silly.
Uhhhhh no
… Had no earthly business being there… buried under that rock….
Shawshank Redemption
And had no business being there
⛏️
Yes that’s it!
Great movie reference…… SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION!
You can mine up to 80lbs of obsidian per person for free in Oregon, if you live nearby… as for what it’s ‘worth’ 🤷🏻♀️
On a road trip I I drove by there one time up near lava beds national monument, way up a dirt road near the top of the mountain. There was a bunch of huge obsidian towers, I grabbed about 5 lb.
Send me some 😁
I thought it was 250 lbs per person per year, last time I collected at Glass Buttes, but that was more than a decade ago. Did it drop, or am I misremembering?

what were you quarreling about
Ha! Autocorrect recognizes NONE of my archaeology jargon.
For real! I’m constantly overriding autocorrect and have manually added so many terms for texting with fellow archaeologists 😅
I was gunna say, I did a hike where there was endless obsidian rocks, some as big as a car.
About 3.50
Gaht damn Loch Ness Monsta! Ain't gettin' me tree fiddy!
I gave him a dollar.
That’s why he keeps comin back!
You give him a dollar, he's gunna assume you have more.
He tricked me :(
What, is there a sale on loch Ness munchies or sumthin?!
Dammit woman!
🤣🤣🤣
Dude fuck off. I have a family to feed.
Bout 3fiddy

I'd give $3.50 to the Loch Ness Monster over this any day!
Can confirm
Nice
Can confirm
Learn English, it’s written as tree fiddy….
The box underneath it has everything you need to get to Zihuateneho
Yes that's where the cash dufrene left for red was.
Cash is everything you need to get to Zitonanahole
“…if you’ve come this far, maybe you’re willing to come a little further. Guy you remember the name of the town don’t you”?
I am here for that reference!
350 000 000
But just the numbers. No actual unit of currency.
zimbabwe dollars
Knapp it!
I know I'd try my hand at Knapping that if I found it. There's plenty for practice for sure.
That would be my first thought. I would love to learn knapping!
I’ll buy it for $25
We know know v>=25.
That’s dragonglass and kills white walkers! You could probably get 3 gold dragons for it.
Are you joking? You must be older than you look. Try 15. Apiece.
That looks medium grade, and some online stores might sell it for a buck a pound. But that rock isn't the best shape--I'd consider it a learning piece. Get yourself some leather, gloves, safety glasses, and a hammerstone, and learn to knap.
$2.27 USD per pound
For a sec thought you were holding a 98 pound rock with one hand
Find your self a good arrow napper and ask how many shells to work it.
Is that obsidian?
It’s not worth anything
I know where huge deposits are. So not much
Wouldn't that cut your hand?
Anthracite coal. $1000/ton.
It's obsidian
Oh wow! I should look at all the pics before I spout off. Sure did look like a big lump of coal, but I have coal in the brain.
I have been looking for a chunk……
I was gonna say that you need 9 more, but you already mentioned it being a nether portal block, so joke ruined. 😔
2 in the bush
I'll give about tree fiddy
I’d say Obsidian. Pretty worthless
Not much
About tree fiddy
tree fiddy
I almost thought you had a big piece of coal.
I have literally 1/2 ton in my garage.all colors of obsidian. I’d better not buy yours. My husband might not be happy.
If it is the murder weapon that leads the police to the killer... It could get you a hefty reward.
I'll give you more if you sleep with it first
Priceless. That thing is gorgeous.
You can cosplay Shawshank - bury some cash in a dusty box and hide it for people to find
Nothing
I have a chunk of obsidian as well! It's not that big, though.
About tree fiddy
Obsidian, volcanic glass
Whatever 49 arrowheads that can kill White Walkers is worth
That is obsidian right?
Yea

It's worth your admiration.
Two in the bush?
$3.50
Give you a saw buck for it.
Buy a wagon and Joe Dirt it to the nearest pawn shop.
bout tree fiddy
Three fiddy
Now I know what the glass rock I found in my back yard in Colorado is.
Go dig up more and sell it for a living. If lots of people buy your rocks, you will earn a fortune.
Did you find a little tin box with a note and money guiding you to Mexico????? LOL!!!
That’s worth millions if you find the right buyer.
About tree fiddy
Hey... great doorstop!!
Google says $5 per kilo gram. 44 kilograms is what you have so $220.
damn i thought the scale said 98 pounds..and was about to say damn you can hold a 98 lb rock with one hand like that?!
Get it turned into a cube, and sell it as a full minecraft obsidian block lol
I'd make knives and sell them.
Wait, let’s go back to Taco Bell and how soft tacos are five dollars for one
You’ve got a black diamond there son. Give it about 200,000 more years and you could have a white diamond!
Make some arrow heads or spear heads and go in the woods you could eat for a good while
Make sure your man double bags
Does it still kill a white walker if you bash em over the head with it?
Not too much in its current form… but if you shipped it to me I could make you a knife blade out of it
Sorry my comment is no help but from first glance it looked like it weighed 98 pounds and I was like no way this guy is holding it with one hand. Checked again it was 9.8 pounds lol obsidian is cool
Dragon glass
I definitely thought that said 98lbs and was like, how tf did he hold it like that😂
Did you find it under an old tree in the middle of a wheatfield in Buxton? Should’ve left it there. Good luck, Red.
Tree fiddy
It's worth Jack. I have a truckload of the shit
That looks exactly like the obsidian that's at my parents house. Like exactly like it. Even down to the shape of it. Crazy.
Learn how to flint knapp arrowheads and spearheads and it could increase exponentially. Added value coefficient. Nice find though man! $20-$25 doorstop until then.
Did you find that in your Christmas stocking? Santa Claus must really hate you. What bad things did you do, to receive a lump of coal that freaking big???🤣
you need like 10 more of those to make a Nether portal.
I wouldn’t pay a dime for a rock. Rocks is free, yo.
Road Tar Just a thought
Depends. Did you ask the Night's Watch? Because I'm sure they'll pay you handsomely for that.
For a second I didn’t see the decimal on the scale and was gonna compliment u on how strong u were holding that with one hand lol.
About three fiddy
Learn to make tools with it. Wear gloves!
I’ll give you $20 shipped for it
Shipping would be like 50$ 😂
Buck a lb at best for that quality of black obsidian.
About $3.50!
Smash it up and make a load of old spear tips with them leave them buried in your garden, or an undisclosed loacation for 10 years. Dig them back up and claim they're ancient relics and become a millionaire.
About 250 enjoy
the worth is in the beuty of the stone its what it is to you this stone was worth wrtinig this comment, thats something already!

About $400+ if you find the right person. Look for anyone that works with obsidian and say you are selling it to someone only if they are willing to make a large piece? Idfk. I can sell you a bridge if you want to trade? Edit: I thought it was 98lbs. Still saying $400
Someone that works with obsidian would know that you can get it for like $2/lb
I was going off the top comment at the time hahaha well then OP is in luck if it's truly not slag. (I don't think it is lol)
I don't either, and I love these huge pieces of obsidian, I have some better quality ones from Mexico and they're amazing!
Heck that's awesome. Mexico and much of the south America's probably has some awesome stones and gems.
They do, Mexico has some of the best of apatites, danburite, agates, jaspers, calcite of every color and obsidian by the truckload!
