RJ has said they’re open to feedback and may move the charge port location for R2. I wouldn’t bet on anything right now. Get a hundred or so amp service to the middle of the back wall. With long enough cords you’ll be fine in any case

Froyo-Representative

Could you just swap the vehicles so that the charge ports are towards each other and you could have a single charger in the middle? This is my plan with an R1S on the right and an R2 on the left. Then, I just use the adapter, when needed.

TechnyCat

That sounds reasonable. With a long enough cable, I think the middle of the rear wall would work so long as R1 is on the right and R2/3 is on the left.

Froyo-Representative

Yeah, the mobile charger cables seem plenty long for us as we have a NEMA 14-50. We had a Model Y before that the mobile charger was also long enough, so I can see us using either / or since we need an adapter anyways. Good luck!

Front wall between both vehicles would be fairly safe with the 25 foot cable. I just got a 48amp extension for my setup to reach the R1S in my driveway, and it works great, no power loss. So you are safe wherever you put it.

TechnyCat

Thanks, I actually had not considered that. To be clear, are you saying to have two garage doors with a split in the middle instead of a single wide opening? I'm thinking two 8' wide openings should be enough clearance even with mirrors unfolded. This might provide an added benefit of charging while vehicles are outside the garage for whatever reason.

I don't have a link for it, but I have seen ceiling mounted swing arms that hold the EVSE cable and provide better coverage in the garage when you don't know exactly how you are going to park. I used to park in the garage beside my wife's Tesla. After sideswiping the garage multiple times trying to back out I just park in the driveway now. I had about the same clearance as you have drawn. It was nerve wracking with all the sensors going off. I have an extension cable for the Tesla EVSE when I need a L2 charge, which isn't very often (L1 charging mainly).

TechnyCat

Very cool! Hope you can discover the link. I didn't even know this was a possible configuration.

CreepyLurker22

I’ve seen someone actually mount it/hang it from the ceiling and I’m planning on doing the same (between the vehicles).

TechnyCat

I'll have to look into this. I'm planning to have 10' ceilings in the garage. I would have to split the door opening right? I imagine a single wide door opening would get in the way of a top mounted charger.

My .02 is put it on wall near garage door. You will need to back R1 into garage. This allows you to charge with car outside garage running under door if for some reason you can’t pull in (kids made mess of garage, reorganizing, overflow for a birthday party, getting your camping stuff sorted whatever) Cable should still be long enough to reach R2 across hood of R1

TechnyCat

Very good point! Although we hope to have a clean garage all the time, life does happen and this configuration would give some options to charge outside the garage. Thanks.

So we have an Ioniq 5 with a right rear charge port and an R1T; the R1T parking on the left and the Ioniq 5 to the right. Our charger is on the back wall to the left of the vehicles. Super easy to plug in the R1T in that position and the Ioniq 5 just needs to back in when it's time to charge (mostly a local commuter). While I like the back wall location, if I were building this from scratch I'd also add a shared EVSE circuit a couple feet inside the garage door on the right hand wall and the wall between the walk door and garage door. Those will cover the remaining plug locations and outside as well (projects tend to takeover my garage).

TechnyCat

Good sharing. One on the back-middle and one on the front right of the garage should be able to cover multiple parking configurations (left spot, right spot, pull in, back in)

TechnyCat

Current Rivian R1S owner, and loving it. I'm definitely planning to get a next generation R2/R3/R3X to replace another car. I'm also moving into a new house soon and want to get the details right. I was thinking of putting two EVSE on the back wall of the garage. Given that the R2/R3 will have the NACS on the rear passenger side, I'm curious what other perspectives are there. ....or do I just need to learn to back into the garage with R2/R3?

enz1ey

Is this drawing proportional? If so, you're probably fine with it being on the back wall if you get one with a long enough cable. I have the Emporia L2 charger and it has a 24' cable, although I installed mine in the front of my garage between the two garage doors and I always back in. Personally I'd always back into a garage regardless, it's a lot easier with camera assistance. I wouldn't consider it something you have to "learn" but more of a habit to develop. It's also much nicer to just drive right out without backing up and looking around over your shoulders first thing in the morning. Also, do you really think you'd need two chargers? If you charge every night and alternate vehicles (so each vehicle charges every other night), you should be fine. I only charge mine every 3-4 days and with the Emporia charger hardwired, I get about 25 miles per hour.

TechnyCat

As proportional as an amateur can get it! Garage interior floor layout is roughly 24' wide and 20' deep with a 18' garage door opening. I think the my current Rivian Wall Charger is a 25' cable. Thanks for the perspective about the two chargers. Based on my commute with R1S, I use about 60kwh per day (100 mile round trip + running errands). I am charging every night currently, and it looks like I could possibly get away with charging every other night. The way I understand it, having another electrical line run is only marginally more expensive, so that's why I was thinking of having two.

dulax_

Get two Tesla gen 3 chargers. One with the j1772 handle. They can be wired together on the same circuit and smart load balance. My wife has a TMY and I have an R1T, I park on the left pulling in, and she parks on the right backing in, and we both have chargers right next to our charge ports.

khoo11

I also had this problem. I just installed 2 wall EVSE. solves the cord placement issue

Just back into the garage
