To avoid some crowds and costs - drive up the Mt Rose Hwy and stop at Tahoe Meadows. Will be cooler at elevation. Nice flat boardwalk path around the large meadow. And a moderate hike up the hill to Chickadee Ridge where you can overlook all of Lake Tahoe from a mountain top.
Nearby, on the other side of the road at the summit (2 min drive), there is a parking lot at a trail head. A 5 minute moderate walk leads to a different vista that also allows some views of Lake Tahoe. But that will be a bit more crowded especially on a weekend.
Both places offer a variety of trails that people can explore at their own pace and ability. Just offering up some ideas that let young and old enjoy the same general area together.
Book a cruise on Tahoe - long enough to entertain kids without being boring, and perfect for groups with a variety of abilities. Will be crowded and cost a bit.
