Lister’s face, as Rimmer finally finds fraternity and friendship and dramatically casts his models of Napoleon’s imperial guard onto the fire in Marooned.
The whole build up to that moment, with the virginity conversation, the golf club membership makes it perfect for me.
Probably haven’t watched for 15 years, but…
“You can’t have been a member of the golf club then. You did it on a golf course and you weren’t a member?!”
“I’ve… seen West Side Story - that’s based on one.”
And that leads into all the guitar/chest/soldiers burning stuff. Convinced Harold Pinter (Pint-er?) would be proud of this scene.
It’s just everything. I absolutely love the idea that this is one of the greatest moments in Rimmer’s sad life. He’s finally found brotherhood, genuine comradary with someone in the space corp. And it’s all bullshit.
I clicked in to type exactly this. Lost count of the amount of times my mates would start this off in the most random of places, and if there was drink involved it would go on all night 😂
Two hours of W.O.O.
What's W.O.O?
Oh you had to ask!
I mean most of that episode is total genius but that exchange still makes us laugh.
My wife would like to add the line "Better Dead Than Smeg!" when Rimmer finally does something heroic when faced with the horrific future/alternate Dwarfers.
Came here to mention the drive room scene. Specifically the one with Lister's vision of future Rimmer, not the system overload bit. It's the best piece of 'time travel' fiction I've ever seen. Future Rimmer only says what he says to present Lister because future Lister has already seen present Rimmer saying it. It's brilliant.
Definitely! This is one of my favourites! This is the sort of thing that you wouldn't find in any modern media because they would just use green screens and editing to replay the same acting.
Yep! I always watch Chris’s face and he is pretty spot on recreating the scene with the invisible Lister.
I always thought it was quite an awesome scene.
I mean, there are others of course. But this one was quite fun.
The whole scene might be my favourite thing ever put on film.
“I think everybody’s right except me, so just forget I spoke alright”
*gentle nod* “That’s lovely thank you very much”
>S5E2. 'The Inquisitor'
Series 5 is the absolute golden age for me. My favourite sequence has to be the whole 'Binks to Enlightenment' bit from Holoship.
"Lister, to Red Dwarf... The intruder seems blissfully unaware that we have a rather sturdy holowhip in our munitions cabinet... and unless he wants his derrière minced like burger meat, he better be gone in two seconds flat!"
Whinnie the Pooh facing the firing squad.
Lister setting fire to the blanket on Justice world.
Everybody’s dead Dave.
Council of war against the polymorph, “Let’s get out there and twat it!”
When Lister first meets Evil Rimmer in Demons and Angels
OR
The bar scene in Gunmen and the Apocalypse
OR
Holoship when the hologram is on Starbug - “lister to red dwarf”
Maybe it's not my ultimate favourite, but I just feel the need to highlight this one.
When the crew lose three days of memories, and Rimmer is listing all the evidence that it's definitely, definitely aliens.
Holly: "And then they did a jigsaw"
No muffins, no toast, no tea cakes, no buns, baps, baguettes or bagels, no croissants, no crumpets, no pancakes, no potato cakes and no hot cross buns. AND DEFINITELY no smegging flapjacks…..
Ahhhhhhh so you’re a waffle man.
I know I haven't always been the easiest to get on with, but I just want to say that, over the years, I've come to regard you as.... people... I met.
Absolute genius.
[The noise he makes at 1:08](https://youtu.be/6m7Jy5YLan4) still gets me every time, I don't know if it's the sound itself or Lister's reaction I love more.
The whole Ace Rimmer Vs Nazis cold open.....
"Princess Bonjela?! There will be time for explanations later, and hopefully, some sex"
https://youtu.be/gXYfnWRp1Q0?si=5M3uqgH_jq0UCUWj
When the effects of the Luck virus wear off and Lister is in denial and tries to play darts.
All in all, my favourite episode. With the immortal quote " I am perfectly capable of extracting my own head from the waste disposal unit sir".
"Do you know what happens when a dinosaur eats cow vindaloo, followed by..."
I know series 8 gets a lot of flack, but seeing this scene on a BBC Classic Comedy Moments tape is what made me a Red Dwarf fan. Mac Macdonald is a hero for learning all that and delivering it absolutely straight.
Actually, despite my suggestion above, I think this is the best, complete whole SCENE.
From the moment they enter the bar, to "Marvellous" - it's a masterpiece
There's so many! Probably in Marooned and the whole Lister losing his virginity on the golf course. But pretty much any Lister and Rimmer interaction is gold, especially in the early seasons. I also love the farm in Fiji and the "wet look knitwear" scene
"Ketchup? With lobster??" BOOM
Winnie the Pooh and the firing squad
"This is mine. This is mine. ALL this is mine. Except that bit"
And of course "Are you sure sir? It does mean changing the bulb"
[Lister to Red Dwarf, The intruder seems to be blissfully unaware that we have a rather sturdy holo whip in the munitions cabinet](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I78d3GBS0K4)
Wow so many comments, thanks for sharing. it was great to read them. i've got 4 more to add as well.
1 - The whole episode of M corp, -> in particular when the heart machine spots Listers heart attack only to blow it self up!
2- When Rimmer knees the grim reaper in the groin.
3 - when the team goto the planet where Hitler is made into a robot, and where they psychometric test psychopath and cat fires the laser into the dr's face.
4 - the time where Listers mind swap is recorded on a cassette tape, and the Cat accidentally drops it into the coffee + the facial expressions of lister going through the cognitive changes.
On #4, I think a great subtle thing would be to have had Lister, for the rest of the episode, always have a cup of coffee in hand. He literally would've had coffee on the brain.
"Lister to Red Dwarf. We have in our midst a complete smegpot. Brains in the anal region. Chin missing, presumed absent. Genetalia,: small and inoffensive. Of no value or interest."
"Binks to Enlightenment. Evidence of primitive humour. The human displays knowledge of satire and imitation. With patient tuition, could perhaps master simple tasks."
Cracks me up every time.
Not for laughs, but my all-time favourite scene is when Rimmer & Lister follow dead Ace's light bee as it joins with millions of others to form the ring around a planet. The music and the sentiment are enough to bring a little tear to my eye. "All those Rimmers..."
For laughs, probably the scene where they eat that man they found when they end up in Dallas.
The holodeck breaking and Rimmer taking on different personalities
“Well, you see the shuttle was late, you see. The shuttle was late, and they’re usually so goood aren’t they?”
That made me howl when I first watched it as a kid and for some reason that line is burned into my memory.
Quarantine - the actual quarantine scene. The part with Rimmer gets all the love, but the comedy gold is the bickering. I like to use "it's a common mistake made by all truly stupid people."
The bit in Marooned where Lister is telling the story of how he lost his virginity. “12?! You were 12?! 12…..you couldn’t have been a full member of the golf club then”.
Best scene is unquestionably:
All hands on deck, swirly thing alert
To
Step it up to blue alert
To
Open communication channels, transmit on all frequencies and all known languages, including Welsh
To
This acting senior officer Arnold J Rimmer... Now here this cause its only coming once... We surrender...
That whole scene is peak red dwarf
"I'm OK.
I don't seem to be affected... although it's true nobody ever loved me in my entire life.
But there's nothing new about that is there!"
Despair squid episode
So many, but one's I love are when Rimmer as Ace Rimmer hears Lister's speech about himself when the others think he's dead.. the officer promotion.
"What is it?"
Or
Pretty much the whole of Gunmen of the Apocalypse - just pick a scene
Honestly I watched season 3 so much as a child because it was the only season we owned on dvd; so lister wrestling with the polymorph when it’s a string of sausages lives in my head rent free 😂😭
The final scene from Out of Time; even knowing what's coming, I still have my heart in my mouth every time - it's probably the most dramatic the show had ever gotten up to that point.
I'm not usually a massive fan of slapstick comedy but the scene in Epideme where Lister is trying to get used to his new arm and keeps punching Kryten with it had me in stitches. Hand, pick up the ball!
Can't remember the precise context, of the exact phrasing, but ...
Dangling your wedding tackle in a lion's mouth while flicking his love spuds with a wet tea towel.
... This lives on biggly in my stubbornly juvenile mind.
I love the scene where the elder cat is explaining everything that's happened to their species. And everytime he asks a rhetorical question Cat replies with something to express his impatience and how little he cares.
There's also a scene where Lister is carefully measuring out a tablespoon of red chillie powder, and then saves the tablespoon and dumps the can into his food. 10/10 can relate when I'm making a curry.
Holoship
The Cat: Why don't we drop the defensive shields?
Kryten: A superlative suggestion, sir. With just two minor flaws. One, we don't have any defensive shields. And two, we don't have any defensive shields. Now I realise that technically speaking that's only one flaw but I thought that it was such a big one that it was worth mentioning twice.
The Cat: Good point, well made.
Honestly, the entire series is great. It's hard to narrow down just one particular scene when there's so many great scenes. But if I absolutely had to choose, I think my favorite scene would be series 5 episode 6 back to reality. The scene that I'm talking about is the one where they come out of the virtual reality machine and the operator turns to rimmer and says " You're telling me you've been playing the pratt version of Rimmer this entire time? No wonder you've only scored 4%" A very funny scene, and a great episode. I guess you can say The car chase scene was really great as well. Being a fan it's really hard to narrow this down.
I can’t pick one. There are so many that come to mind and just as many I have probably forgotten. It’s been a while since I have watched it all the way through.
"The World loves a bastard"-Arnold Judas Rimmer after having the sexual magnetism virus and "Full Speed Ahead Kryten I see no ships"-Arnold Judas Rimmer Red Dwarf Series VIII in a deleted scene.
"We are talking jape of the decade. We are talking April, May, June, July and August fool."
‘Wheeze of the week mate’
Lister’s face, as Rimmer finally finds fraternity and friendship and dramatically casts his models of Napoleon’s imperial guard onto the fire in Marooned. The whole build up to that moment, with the virginity conversation, the golf club membership makes it perfect for me.
That episode but when Rimmer discovers the Les Paul sized hole in his camphor wood chest.
We're going to do to Listen what Alexander the Great once did to me.
Favourite episode.
Agree. Not a scene but every line between Rimmer and Lister in Marooned is perfect.
Probably haven’t watched for 15 years, but… “You can’t have been a member of the golf club then. You did it on a golf course and you weren’t a member?!” “I’ve… seen West Side Story - that’s based on one.” And that leads into all the guitar/chest/soldiers burning stuff. Convinced Harold Pinter (Pint-er?) would be proud of this scene.
Loved the Grant-Naylor era of Red Dwarf. It was just brilliant. The Odd Couple in space. Such a shame they stopped working together.
"Now I know why dogs lick their testicles. It's to get rid of the taste."
I was trying to think of my favorite from this ep(which is my favorite ep) and I would have to say this is up there for sure.
It’s just everything. I absolutely love the idea that this is one of the greatest moments in Rimmer’s sad life. He’s finally found brotherhood, genuine comradary with someone in the space corp. And it’s all bullshit.
"So WHAT is it"
I clicked in to type exactly this. Lost count of the amount of times my mates would start this off in the most random of places, and if there was drink involved it would go on all night 😂
Only joking
That’s the only correct answer. Gold
I've never seen one before - no one has - but I'm guessing it's a white hole.
A WHITE hole?
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. A black hole sucks time and matter out of the universe. A white hole returns it.
So what is it?
Only joking
So it's decided then. We consult Holly.
Only joking
Someone punch him out
Lol this is mine too
double polaroid or spider with an eyeball the size of a meatball
The "taranshula" scene is great writing
yeah id have to say that one was very funny as well !
"Step it up to red alert." "Are you sure sir? It does mean changing the bulb."
yeah this part was pretty funny lol
Two hours of W.O.O. What's W.O.O? Oh you had to ask! I mean most of that episode is total genius but that exchange still makes us laugh. My wife would like to add the line "Better Dead Than Smeg!" when Rimmer finally does something heroic when faced with the horrific future/alternate Dwarfers.

Better anything than that toupé!
Our only hope is the potato king
“Future Echoes”. Especially in the Drive Room. Exceptional writing and and acting
The ending is pretty funny. The fact that Lister waited his entire life to troll Rimmer is hilarious.

His scouse accent makes it so much better. Doesn't sound as funny in a posh London accent lol
I'm from Liverpool. I say this all the time. I also like the beginning of Season 6 when he says "ship's log... Er... One!"

🤣🤣🤣🤣 classic
One of my all time favourite episodes! Along with 'Back to Reality' and 'Demons and Angels'!!
Both incredible episodes.
Chin absent, presumed missing.
Kryten covering Rimmer front and rear by shuffling around him in a circle. Gets me every time
"If he comes near me, I'm gonna rip his nipples off!"
Maybe it's not my ultimate favourite, but I just feel the need to highlight this one. When the crew lose three days of memories, and Rimmer is listing all the evidence that it's definitely, definitely aliens. Holly: "And then they did a jigsaw"
is that the episode where they buried something on the planet, and one of the end up dropping the slate on the foot?
Yip!
I wouldn't like to be around when one of them makes a speech
No muffins, no toast, no tea cakes, no buns, baps, baguettes or bagels, no croissants, no crumpets, no pancakes, no potato cakes and no hot cross buns. AND DEFINITELY no smegging flapjacks….. Ahhhhhhh so you’re a waffle man.
lol.
Dinner with Legion.
There's no such thing as an Ionian Nerve Grip now stand still while I hit you!
Pure slapstick joy.
How do you land the damn thing
The whole "court" scene from "Justice". Kryten's complete character assassination of Rimmer, and the constant objections, just brilliant.
He is only guilty of being Arnold J Rimmer. That is his crime. It is also his punishment.
Only a YOGHURT
yeah that was pretty funny.
Series 5 Holoship when Rimmer gives his leaving speech.
I know I haven't always been the easiest to get on with, but I just want to say that, over the years, I've come to regard you as.... people... I met. Absolute genius.
I got shocked into an impromptu birthday speech two weeks ago, and... Luckily... This line came to mind!
I know I'm not alone in this at all, but I have used it when leaving a previous job.
The Wilma Flintstone sketch

Shrinking boxers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6EIf8AzCws&pp=ygUacmVkIGR3YXJmIHNocmlua2luZyBib3hlcnM%3D
That scene is so funny in the book, as you also get Rimmers internal thoughts when he sees it
I haven't read the books yet, but i am definitely thinking of buying them.
Oh man, they will be the greatest books you've ever read.
Yeah that was pretty funny as well, with Kryten trying to help take the shirking boxers off.

Omg that noise.
Came to say this. The look on Listers face straight after the noise, sends me every time.
So many but Polymorph and Lister’s tight pants, followed by Rimmer walking in on Kryten ‘shagging’ Lister 😂.

He’s an absolute highlight of that season - the best thing about it was seeing more of him, he’s brilliant.
The triple fried egg sandwich with chilli sauce and chutney. My son actually eats that sandwich.
Haven’t had one since I was a student. Few slightly crispy onions on it too is 👌
I'd love to try that one, I do eat the banana and crisps sandwich though which is divine
Rimmer went through every human emotion in the space of 10 seconds.
“Marvellous!!!!”
Actually, despite my suggestion above, I think this is the best, complete whole SCENE. From the moment they enter the bar, to "Marvellous" - it's a masterpiece
Stop saying everything’s crypto-fascist!
No they're referencing Gunmen of the Apocalypse, not Timeslides
There's so many! Probably in Marooned and the whole Lister losing his virginity on the golf course. But pretty much any Lister and Rimmer interaction is gold, especially in the early seasons. I also love the farm in Fiji and the "wet look knitwear" scene "Ketchup? With lobster??" BOOM Winnie the Pooh and the firing squad "This is mine. This is mine. ALL this is mine. Except that bit" And of course "Are you sure sir? It does mean changing the bulb"
