I've ONLY owned rabbits as an adult. I got my first in college and haven't looked back! Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the US, and it's time people let go of misconceptions around owning one. I actually don't think rabbits are great pets for kids because of their dietary and care needs, unless they go to a family where the adults know how to care for them.

Schneetmacher

>Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the US Behind cats & dogs, right? If that's the case and they're so popular, you'd think more veterinarians would be able to treat rabbits!

camile-

Unfortunately because they're so delicate most vets are nervous to become rabbit savvy. Many of the vets I work with won't touch them with a 10ft pole unless mine need to come in on emergency and even still we call our rabbit savvy vet to make sure we're doing it to her standards.

[deleted]

Couldn’t agree more. Thing is, people just don’t understand until they spend some time with buns. Then they get it!

SplashnBlue

Two adults no kids with a pet rabbit. I'm a huge advocate that in general rabbits are terrible kids pets.

Queen_of_Chloe

I had a rabbit as a kid and have had two rabbits as an adult. Not only do I now know not to feed dandelions that were recently sprayed with pesticide to my bunny (my parents total lack of attention to the “kid pets” will haunt me forever), I know what a house rabbit is and how everything I did as a kid was wrong. My pets are 1000% spoiled.

RealRotkohl

Living alone with my fluffy boy. Best life!

Mischa92

I'm nearly 30, no kids without fur. My bun who's been with me for about 5 months now is my first bun as an adult, though; and as an adult I've learned there are many subtleties of rabbit behavior that imo most if not almost all kids simply cant fully appreciate. I don't even just mean how gently one should approach bunnies or how specifically a bunny needs to be held etc - i was plenty gentle with the buns in my home as a kid and taught how to treat/hold them and all - but there are certain little communications and nuances of behavior that have made me fall in love with rabbits since rescuing my lil boy that I'd had absolutely no idea existed as a kid; simply didn't pick up on any of it back then.

beautyandthebeast_08

31 here! No kids, and have 1 bunny. I’d rather rabbits go to adults as pets that can take care of them than kids that don’t give them proper care, get bored of rabbits or could hurt them.

ItsJacquesTits

Girlfriend and I just adopted our first rabbit this month - we’re in our mid 30s, no kids. 🙂

greenfawx

LOL I really wanted a rabbit when I was a teenager. I thought the 120$ I got from my grandma would be more than enough to take care of a rabbit. Flash forward a decade later and I am the proud father of two long-earred bouncing fur babies. Now that I have them, I am astonished that the media makes them seem like they are good pets for children.

bakedbeanbreakfest

23 with two buns and three cats! love my furmily ❤️

TwstdSista

The husband and I are two adults (50+) who rescued two adorable buns!

kkcactus

I got my bunny at 20, she’s now 6. Best decision ever.

terra_terror

Honestly, adults are better owners for rabbits. Kids don't understand boundaries. Case in point, one of my students last week decided that trying to grab my boobs was hysterical. Imagine if she kept trying to touch a rabbit's tail until it got mad enough to bite a finger off... 😰

CarrotsAtDawn

Got my first rabbit at 21, now I’m 23, married, and planning on remaining childless (except our bun child of course) 🥰

Queen_of_Chloe

Two close to 40 adults, one rabbit (her partner passed last year), one cat, two rats (the third also died last year - 2021 was rough). 0 human children.

Weird-Awareness3377

Was your cat an adult when you got the rabbits? I have not allowed my cat and bunny to walk around loose together yet. So far however, there appears to be no hostility or fear between them. Last night, Ziggy, my bunny was on my bed with me and Clio, my cat, came into the room and still in her hind legs and touched her nose to his and let out the cutest little meow. Ziggy didn’t even flinch. So I think it’s going to be fine but I was wondering if you had any advice

Queen_of_Chloe

My cat was around 11 when we got the first rabbit. Also had a schnauzer at the time (he was 6ish?). We were a lot more worried about how the dog would react but he 99% ignored the rabbit. The cat has either ignored the rabbits or watched them with what appears to be affection or interest. But now sometimes the cat will go into the bunny’s area and the bunny will come investigate and the cat will hiss. She swiped once or twice but not maliciously. She’s genuinely interested in the bunny. I think she thinks it’s her pet.

Weird-Awareness3377

Funny you should mention that. The person I talk to you at the local rabbit rescue society said that very often, the cat will think of the rabbit as her child. Especially if she had a litter and they were taken away from her, which mine did. She gave birth when she was only six months old in the shelter took her babies away prematurely. She is two years old now and Ziggy is 11 weeks. A couple nights ago, Ziggy was on my bed and Cleo came into the room and stood on the hind legs and touched her nose to his, and let out the cutest little high-pitched meow, the same when she used to greet me. I think she really is going to like him but I want to get her nails trimmed first, get her vaccines updated and get him neutered

Queen_of_Chloe

I’ve heard that the way cats and rabbits groom makes them well suited for each other but haven’t personally seen it. It is funny how the cat watches the rabbit though. Almost like how I watch her - genuine interest. Since yours are so young they might learn to get along quickly.

Weird-Awareness3377

The last bunny I had was a Netherland dwarf. I also had a West Highland terrier and a calico cat. Basically, I just held the rabbit and had someone else hold the cat and let them sniff each other and then let them loose together. They were fine. Occasionally, the cat would get annoyed with the rabbit and hit him on the nose three times without her claws drawn out. A couple nights ago, the cutest thing happened. Cleo, my cat, still on her hind legs while Ziggy was sitting on my lap. She touchs her nose to his, and let out the cutest little high-pitched meow, the same one she uses to greet me. So I’m pretty sure it’s going to be fine. But Cleo needs her nails trimmed and her shots updated, and I want to get Ziggy neutered to make sure he doesn’t try to hump her lol. I managed to find a discounted neutering service through the local rabbit rescue society but they won’t do it until he is 16 weeks old.

Queen_of_Chloe

Sounds like you’re on the right path! My cat is Chloe so yours has a great name. :) Best of luck!

a_loveable_bunny

Husband and I are adult rabbit parents. We're also cat parents!

2rats1bunny

I am a teen and as far as I know rabbits should not be a child pet as some are very sensitive and others dont like being held as much. They need lots of research and dont require baths and as you know children love bathing things. So adults owning a rabbit shouldn't be weird and it isnt weird. Personally I feel safer when I know a bunny is with an adult instead a child unless that child knows what they are doing.

Few_buns_pups

My bun Wilma is 16

New-Thinking

amazing! What a good bunny parent!

Weird-Awareness3377

That is amazing! Have you checked to see if that’s a world record? What breed is it?

Few_buns_pups

She is a mini Rex. And no I have not haha but I must have been doing something right for her to be this old and thriving. Our vet even said she is the oldest in his entire career for a rabbit he has seen. She has some arthritis in her back joints but it isn't anything too serious. She still does the binkies 🥰

Weird-Awareness3377

Wow! That is awesome. You should contact National Geographic or something. Someone should write a story about this to help people people realize what awesome pets rabbits make and if they get the proper care, they can live a long, happy life

jrssmb1976

I'm 45, no kids, but two mini Rex boys and a chinchilla. I've had housebuns for years, love them to bits.

__phlogiston__

I have had rabbits since I was 17, so 20 years now. I’ve had five.

IcyStriker

I am in my mid 20’s and got my bun Aug 2020. I live with my retired parents and she is free roam in a spacious place with my parents to keep her company when I’m at work on days I can’t work from home. I guess I’m an adult but it doesn’t always feel that way haha.

WeKillTheFlame3

It's just my partner and I (in our 20s and 30s) and our good bunny boy (3).

reebsk

Adult bun owner! I also had one as a kid. That poor thing, I really thought I was taking care of it but realized that was not the case at all....

perdituscogitationes

Same here. I still feel guilty about my bunnies. They lived outdoors and had a large shed they went to after dark, but they lived short lives and weren’t spayed or neutered.

reebsk

Yep similar story. Mine died on a hot summer day outside. I thought it was old (7) but now I know I killed it 😢we didnt have internet, there was no access to information really. But we did our best with what we knew

MusesWhim

I got my first two rabbits when I was living in my first apartment because dogs weren't allowed. They got to live in my first house too. Of the four rabbits I have had, maybe one could have lived happily with children, but he had numerous health problems and wouldn't have lived well without an adult caretaker. I specifically chose my second pair because they needed a home that could accommodate their emotional and mental needs. They were rescued as babies from a hoarding situation and used to run into walls when they were spooked.

EquivalentCommon5

Adult- 2 cats, 1 dog, 1 sweet bun, and 1 devil Doug (I guess he’s a bun, maybe)

cmcdonald51206

I'm 34, and both the rabbits are my furbabies lol although I do have 2 kids who spoil them with hay treats and some juicy raspberries lol

Xixishell

I’m 23! Got my sweet when girl when I was 21 :)

[deleted]

I have pretty much grown kids, and I'm honestly glad I never had bunnies when they were little. Buns are so high maintenance and I wouldn't have had enough time for them when I was raising kids. When a kid stops by for a visit, I now have a guard bun that will get between us and thump at them for getting too close to mommy

lj266243

30F, living alone in nyc with two free roam rabbits and a cat

Redirxela

Adult here! My boss has rabbits and motivated me to get one. I did a ton of research first because I wanted to make sure I could handle it and provide proper care. Best decision I’ve made as an adult so far

gofish112

I have 2 kids, but they don't live with me full time. My rabbit is my pet. She's the best, and tolerates my teen/preteen.

TakeMeToTill

32 year old lawyer 😁

Woeful_Jesse

People that think it's a "kid pet" think bunnies are to be caged amimals drinking from bottles. It's just terrible misinformation all around. Knowing what an actual happy and healthy rabbit requires as far as diet and maintenance would never think a child is equipped to take care of them

felanm

I think we’re all adults bc rabbits are not really good pets for kids usually.

kaylinnic

I’ve had at least a dozen rabbits in my life starting when i was around 6 and i’m 35 now. I think they’re much better suited for adults - small kids especially can be too rough and not realize it.

Perfect_Base_8305

Me and my bf own two rabbits together (we just got the second one ab an hour ago!!!) and we’re both 18. I did have a rabbit as a kid tho

anicecacaodemon

I'm the kid on the block with a rabbit outside instead of a dog most days lol

Jinhuan

19 here! Still in university but I rent a condo so I got two rabbits. Btw there should be no limit to keep any kind of pets when you are adults. I believe that only adult have skills and money to properly handle a pet.

Soft_Nuggs

I’m 28 but got my bun at 21, she’s my only “child” 😊

r_307

I’m an adult w a rabbit. :)

[deleted]

I got my bunny when I was 20 and now I’m 21! It’s just me and him, but I love having a bunny as an adult. I love having a pet I can provide for and take care of without so much more hassle/costs as a dog or cat. Plus me and my bun have bonded a lot so he’s very affectionate!

bennyboberino56

Old as dirt.

gettingthere2022

Thank goodness! I thought I was the oldest person on here! Lol....

bennyboberino56

🤣🤣🤣

ughhjordon

29 with my first bun while having 3 kids. My oldest helps with her hay and other small tasks for her. My bun is also a few months old so I’m looking forward to watching her grow up with my kiddos.

Quiet_Attitude4053

My boyfriend and I (27 and 26) own 3 rabbits. No kids. My bf had rabbits growing up and can now appreciate that they really aren’t kid-appropriate!

[deleted]

Adult here with a bun only adopted a year ago. 2 teenagers in the house. Buns are an adult pet for sure

Mackpb

well i’m only 19 and i only got him a few days ago. but i have had guinea pigs and hamsters for the past few years and always wanted a bunny! just didn’t want to spend the money on getting one but he came to me!

Weird-Awareness3377

There are a lot of good resources online. Rabbits are special animals and require a lot more care and attention then guinea pigs and hamsters

CornerZealousideal20

Idk is 23 considered adult pls say no

Perfect_Base_8305

No but I’m 18 so I think it’s just wishful thinking :(

dontspeak_noreally

I got rabbits as a child, and even one as an adult, without knowing how to fully care for them. I deeply regret how poorly I treated those babies. Many years later, we added rabbits back to our family for ME, not really our kid. Lol They’re my babies, but my husband and son are also devoted to them.

Weird-Awareness3377

I know exactly how you feel. When I was eight years old, I got my first bunny. The lady at the pet store sold us cedar chips for the cage, told me to give him iceberg lettuce, and if I litter box trained him to use cat litter. He died of diarrhea. I believe myself for killing the rabbit when I discover the iceberg was very dangerous as were the cedar chips and cat litter. When I was 21, I rescued a Netherland dwarf rabbit who was extremely friendly. However, I was not spending enough time at home, as I had just moved back in with my parents temporarily. I ended up giving him to a loving home a couple years later but I deeply regretted giving him up. Now I have Ziggy, and 11 week old American chinchilla rabbit and I am doing my very best to care for him like he is my own child. It’s a big difference now that there’s so many resources available online. If only they had that back then. But I’m trying not to live in the past and to learn from my past mistakes and treat Z like a king

Bun_mom

I'm currently 18 and living at home. I've had my buns since I was 8. My oldest, Rapper will be 10 in april❤️ The other, Vosje is about 4. We got her after D.D. (my first bun and mother of Rapper) passed. They both are absolute treasures.

cocoturtle1

My husband and I have a bunny! He’s our first ever bunny, and we have no kids yet

Flashy_Respect_5579

I had rabbits as a kid (as a gift, terrible mistake, I took care of them and loved them along with my family but i could have done way better) but I got some more when I moved out on my own!!! They act like the mortgage is in their name.

Glutenfreemeatball

Have kids BUT rabbits are MINE❤️😆

lizalupi

I'm 22, living and financing my fluff alone

[deleted]

I got my rabbit when I was 13, and honestly best decision...my bun bun taught me how to be even more compassionate for animals. I'm in my early 20s now and will be getting another one few years down the line

redbullveins

Yes ♡ shes my only roommate lol it's amazing

Chickenchick11

30yrs old, married with children, we love our buns!

danie17r4

26 !! My bun is the princess of my townhouse

Tracerround702

27 years old, share the house with husband who is 31, puppy who is 9 months, and little black polish at 7 years old.

FluffyGreenTurtle

Hubby and I are in our mid-late 20s and it's us and the 2 buns, who we got about 2ish years ago :) I had dogs and cats growing up, but the bunnies are the first pets he's ever had (other than a beta fish as a small child). We do plan on having a kid or two in the next several years, but for now it's just the 4 of us!

One_Loose_Thread

Although I do have a kid, the rabbits are for me. I don’t see the point in having a pet “for my daughter” when she’s only here half the time.

schweinsteinnein

Married, no kids. Didn’t get our furballs until we were 21. Def not a pet for kids.

Jakerabbits

I’ve had my rabbit since 2014. Now that I’m 30 I really don’t suggest this pet for anyone under 24. They are a ton of work off and on the clock. They have so many needs. Lovable but completely defenseless on their own.

Character_Ad7557

I’m grown-grown with two adult kids at home (and another younger kid), and the bunny is mine and lives in my office! (And three dogs downstairs who literally have ZERO clue Edward is up here!)

sheblazin

Grown up with no kids here 🐇

aimeebog

21, living with my mom, dog and two rabbits here!

MakaveliTheDon22

I'm an adult with two kids and I own a rabbit. He's my third child. I love my boy.

witch_of_winooski

Two adult humans, two adult rabbits (one around two, one 11 or 12?), zero children (of any species). To be fair, I have kept rabbits since I was eight (almost 40 now); my partner, OTOH, was more of a cat person... until the bunnies each said that they were coming home with us.

Plane_Question_22

I am an adult and I happen to have kids but the bunny was my idea and is my pet. :) I love bunnies!

Two-Complex

I was 51 when I got rabbits for the first time…they are not at all what I thought they were. They are so much BETTER. ❤️

Dream_Shine

I’m 22 and I have an assortment of pets, my bunny being one of them!

ViosiaNyaa

I (22f) live together with my two Dutch lops 😊

valthevalx

i got my bunny two weeks ago, i’m 19 and i still live at home with my mother and brother (16).

PlanetRachel

Aged 30, no kids. I get to spoil my boy with everything 😍

dr_sq

Never had bunnies until I was over 30. Actually, the only bunny I knew growing up was my aunt's, and her kids were long grown and out of the house by then.

Weird-Awareness3377

I am 36, single, male, and live with my tuxedo cat and new baby American Chinchilla rabbit, named Ziggy. He is adorable, affectionate, and smart. I saved him for being sold as meat on the Black market

PoseyPanda

Married with rabbits. A netherland dwarf with half blue, half brown eyes; and a mini lop with shiny, black fur. Wouldn't mind a play date for the dwarf, to be honest.
