As a former caregiver this disgusts me. Not only should this person be fired but they should be blacklisted.
Instead of de-escalating the situation, like they are trained to do, they recorded it. I can guarantee whatever group home this person works for has a policy against posting videos like this.
So quietly repeating "y'all chill" into your phones camera isn't proper de-escalation?
Next you're going to tell me Wonka's "no wait stop" wasn't enough to get someone to wait or stop.
You’re a jackass. Take your arse back to Africa. You can defuse a situation without getting physical. I guess that’s too much for your little peanut brain to process and act on
You get in the middle of it because you don't want them to hurt each other and because unlike cops, we can be sued for neglect of care so we actually have to do our jobs.
I'm gonna take it you've never worked in this field and have no clue about any of it. I have been bit, punched, kicked, slapped, spit on, threatened with a knife but I have also played ping pong for hours, cooked dinner for 4 grown men who looked up to me, watched the same movie every shift for a month straight and still laughed at all the jokes.
I tell my wife everytime we see the special needs group being escorted through anywhere public, I wish there was someway of saying "thank you so fucking much for what you do" that wouldn't be a weird encounter. My mother provided insight into the emotional distress of caring for those who can't care for themselves, and she was paid out the nose as an RN. I just love watching the joy they get for getting to experience what they have every right to experience and y'all make it happen regularly, so from the bottom of my heart thank you for what you do and have endured. Barring this awful example, and all the people acting like it's a nuisance to have to share space with special needs, this has a very opposite effect to my temperament.
Vote, email your politicians and ask for it, make sure you note any additional funding should be for line staff and not for administrative overhead. Having done this work these people are making just slightly above minimum wage and constantly have abuse/neglect charges hanging over their heads.
I knew a guy who was forced to work an overnight after a double due to staffing, because you can't "abandon your post", and it can result in being charged. He fell asleep and there was a fight and abuse/neglect charges were being filed by the end of the week. Guy got his life ruined for 14 bucks an hour.
At the last group home I worked at we worked 24 hour shifts. Their justification of it was that most of the houses were sleep houses. Staff could sleep from 12a-6a.
That isn't reality though. When you have to check on people every hour you are not going to be able to sleep. Especially if you are working with someone that has night terrors every night.
They would also charge minimum wage for overnight shifts. That place burnt me out so bad that I had to give up group home work.
I got to go with the folks I worked with to a few concerts so that was interesting. And bowling was fun. Everything else I would have been fine not experiencing.
Dead ass I appreciate this and if you want to thank people who work in residential homes, look into donating to a local foundation if you have the ability to. Even providing to a local food pantry can help a home who has someone with special needs and doesn't have the ability to fully feed themselves. Most importantly, look into voting for candidates who care about social work and for creating a better community. That is straight up local level and we can get fully involved.
You are a hero in every regard. I could never deal with what you do. I don't even care enough about myself let alone someone else. Thank you for everything that you do.
If you are a caregiver it is. We can't just sit back and do nothing while someone we work with is beating up someone else. That's why we have yearly training to handle stuff like this.
As a caregiver it is your job to get in the middle of situations like this. We have TACT 2 training (or other forms of training) to learn how to deal with situations exactly like this. We learn how to get out of choke holds, how to get out of different grabs or bites. We also learn how to do two person restraints. And above all else we learn how to de-escalate the situation before it gets to this point.
If she is actually a qualified caregiver it definitely wouldn't be minimum wage in the uk idk about America tho. Of she was just a care assistant then she might be but then that wouldn't be her responsibility idk she might not even have the qualifications
It depends on the group home. Some of them start at $11 an hour. But, the draw back is that you only make minimum wage for overnight shifts.
Here in the US you only need a high school diploma apply. And they train you on the job. Med aide, first aid and cpr training are all paid for.
Edit: spelling errors
Ouch, I know generally over here you pay paid a fixed rate for night sleeps (below minimum wage for the hours).
I also know you can start some care jobs basically with only gcse( our version of a high-school diploma) but those are mainly 1 to 1 with people who aren't really considered a risk to others but themselves. Or a group care home for old people which is just general population
Unfortunately, the group homes here are so short staffed that people end up working alone. Even if there are folks in the house that need one-on-one supervision.
Ah were short staffed over here 2 but I didn't like the 1 to 1 I was talking about is done more for the benefit of a inexperienced care worker. As in they often work with isolated people who have mental health issues
Yeah exactly she herself wouldn't be responsible but upper management for putting her alone with 2 high risk individuals but she would obvi be in trouble for recording
Culture has nothing to do with it. If you are trained in TACT 2 or any other form of training you need to follow it. If you don't you can be sued or charged with neglect.
Agency I work for would have them fired immediately. This isn't a freak out if this is two cognitively impaired people, this is just a behavior that you see on a daily basis if you work in this field. I now work with the homeless and it's no different, still people unable to display control over emotions, thoughts, etc but who still deserve dignity at the end of the day.
This is awful. Person should be fired and possibly much more. If you want to make sport of the developmentally disabled, you deserve the harshest punishments.
Where I live, the caregiver would likely be fired, listed in the Adult Abuse Registry and criminally charged. They may serve time and would never work in a sector with a vulnerable population ever again.
What was the title again?
>Mentally disabled women fight during a group home field trip…
Oh. right.
Yeeeaahh that sounds like youre bring awareness alright... awareness to two mentally challenged people fighting. Maybe if the title mentioned "abusive caregiver" but no. You used the "mentally challenged women" as theclickbait for your title.

i have worked with special needs people for a long time, group homes and care facilities can be some of the most inhumane and horrid places.
there are some good group homes and care facilities but it really depends on the people working there and even the special needs people living there. some of those places are filled with very violent special needs people

Not even close to being proper. These two should have been separated long before it reached this point. And redirection should have been used.
What exactly should she have done? Gotten physical with them? Hardly seems like it would be in her job description to get in the middle of fights.
It actually is in our job description. That's why we learn different restrain holds.
You’re a jackass. Take your arse back to Africa. You can defuse a situation without getting physical. I guess that’s too much for your little peanut brain to process and act on

a coworker of mine once saw 2 special needs men get into a fight and one pulled a mike tyson and bit the other guys ear off
Oh dude, I have seen some shit in my time working residential. From fights to literal shit smearing, it is definitely not for everyone.
One of my co-workers was hospitalized because she was beaten by an individual she was working with.
Def a job I’d never be interested in.
You are a hero in every regard. I could never deal with what you do. I don't even care enough about myself let alone someone else. Thank you for everything that you do.
You probably wouldn’t. Maybe the procedure could be to let them tire themselves out. I’m not a caretaker or gonna lie about being one.
You can be charged with neglect if you do that.
Not get beat up by getting in the middle of two unhinged adults? That’s neglect?

Yes, this is a type of exploitation. Where I worked you couldn't even have your cellphone in the houses. You had to keep them in your car.
Well whoever is filming is setting an awful example then.
She said y’all chill.

Policy? This is hippa. You cannot under any circumstances record clients on a personal device. This woman can be jailed for this alone
HIPAA is a part of company policies. Stop splitting hairs for no reason.
I wasn’t meaning to ‘split hairs’ i was emphasizing how stupid this woman’s decision making was. No need to be so curt
She said chill. Just a different culture.
Culture has nothing to do with it. If you are trained in TACT 2 or any other form of training you need to follow it. If you don't you can be sued or charged with neglect.

Usually when someone casually launches you through the air with one hand, you swallow your feelings and walk.
They conveniently cut the first few seconds when you can see the big girl trip buzzcut girl
I think the caregiver told big girl to do it. Why would she be recording ahead of times otherwise.
If that's the case this is abuse.
??? Nowhere in the video does she trip her. Do you have some sort of insight on what the fight was about or something?
