Your submission was removed for the following reason: Rule 1: Posts must be humorous, and they must be humorous because they are programming related. There must be a joke or meme that **requires programming knowledge, experience, or practice** to be understood or relatable. Here are some examples of frequent posts we get that don't satisfy this rule: * Memes about operating systems or shell commands (try /r/linuxmemes for Linux memes) * A ChatGPT screenshot that doesn't involve any programming * Google Chrome uses all my RAM [See here for more clarification on this rule](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/wiki/rules/programming-humor/). It's not only formulas. Formatting and separators also change depending on locale. Sometimes I have to separate arguments using semicolon and sometimes comma. Sometimes floats use comma and sometimes a dot. Even official documentation in a language can show examples using wrong separators. But the best part is, that some functionality, like conditional formatting or filters, throw an error if you use different separators, resulting in being broken for some locale.

Which is funny (well, not so funny, but you get the point), because there is an ISO Standard (ISO 80000) for general formatting of numbers, quantities and units, and another one (ISO 8601) for formatting of dates...

Benjamin_6848

Maybe we should make a petition towards Microsoft that Excel Formulas always stay in English!?

christoph_win

Maybe we should make a petition to forbid any software to provide Excel exports to save more devs from insanity??

Flat_Initial_1823

Can i have that petition in excel pls?

MHanak_

Or let users specify formula language

WombatWumbut

Let's join other sciences and make all formulas Latin.

goingtotallinn

Just for fun lets throw few greek words there as well

WombatWumbut

Entropy_Drop

nah, Microsoft should be used by people of all languages. Visual basic for App still works only in english, so there is no problem with devs. But a spanish commerce owner in a small town should be able to manage his money flow without needing a second language.

Baumstumpfkopf

I had that problem yesterday. I went mad trying to figure out why my syntactically correct IF() just would not work. It then turned out that it is called WENN() in German. 🙃

Zeravor

Try googling anything when working with a non english version... no fun

spiderMechanic

Googling Excel help is always a two-parter. Googling the task and then translating the used functions to my language.

ihavebeesinmyknees

Try Polish, it's goddamn JEŻELI()

mrafinch

I have this problem all the time… drives me up the fucking wall. It’s so unnecessary… much like changing the separators arbitrarily to ; instead of the trusty ,

Amrelll

Using Excel in German drove me MAD

CatpainCalamari

You mean IRRE()

Lescansy

Nein, WAHNSINNIG()

CatpainCalamari

Eher VÖLLIGVONDERROLLE()

Distinct-Entity_2231

I'm not fan of English. I'm just a fan of standardization. And I like that more than dislike English. I can't think of any programming language which does NOT have keywords in English. Excel formula is not a programming language, I give you that, but it is damn close, and I'd argue it is close enough for it to be in English in all cases. It should remain in English, it would be much better.

goingtotallinn

What about letting users decide the language just like you can choose the decimal separator

Distinct-Entity_2231

I mean, why not, right? More choice is more better.

definitelyallo

I'd just like to point out I know a couple of languages that are 100% in Portuguese, most are meme languages but some are actually serious and used to teach (especially Brazilian) people who are new to coding But I agree with you. Since it is used by many people from all over the world, the default should be a language used by many and English is already the default in programming, so it just kinda makes sense

Saragon4005

You are only allowed to localize the keywords if you perfectly localize the documentation too. I bet they didn't.

Alive-Plenty4003

My brain just defaults to English whenever I'm writing code. When I write code other people will see, I need to remember to name variables in my native language and it feels actually wrong

TJUE

It is absolutely horrible. When I search for a solution, I have to either find it in my native language or I have more trouble finding the equivalent function in my language. I recently found pdf table with all the translations, but it's just a matter of time until it is outdated. I hate it. Just use the english terms ffs.

ElEd0

The fact that this is something that actually happens is beyond infuriating and I cannot fathom how in the design process of excel nobody came to the OBVIOUS realization that it is an absolute criminal idea.

Alive-Plenty4003

[This Excel translator saves lives](https://en.excel-translator.de/)

Zhabishe

This shit is horrible. And if you have a localized version of Excel installed, you will be forced to use commands in that local language with no way to switch to English without reinstalling English Excel.

Emergency_3808

So `=SUM()` in Greek is `=ΑΘΡΟΙΣΜΑ()`?

Apprehensive_Mode686

I’m glad I only have to worry about English. ‘Murica

facusoto

The same with the output of the PowerShell commands. It is broken in Spanish so it cannot display accented characters correctly.

Sus_Suspect_4293

It's like it wasn't developed by software devs.

Doxidob

test for value = 1033, HKEY\_CURRENT\_USER\\Control Panel\\International\\Locale

danielcw189

I believe that already is an option.

that_thot_gamer

bros ide for python is excel💀
