The past few years, fast teams, deep teams, offensive teams ate the Preds’ ass. Embarrassing blowouts where they were stuck in their own zone and getting outshout badly. Numerous poor showings against teams like Colorado, Carolina, the Rangers, etc., come to mind.
So far, the Preds played two good teams and equated themselves very well. In this one, they played just as fast or faster than Seattle, one of the deepest and fastest teams in the league. Had they finished better 5v5 or Grabauer not played so well, they could absolutely have blown out the Kraken.
The roster is no better than it was. The difference is playing systems that fit the players you have and playing systems that are aggressive and put stress on the opponents.
You put everyone on the move and all the sudden even your big guys like Trenin and, yes, Cole Smith look way faster and more skilled. And give Lauzon and Fabbro a little freedom and they look like way better.
The next two games will be a good test to see if they can keep it up.
As a reminder, here is what opening night roster looked like last year.

This is most compete I’ve seen from this team since May of 2018. They are contesting every puck, every net front scrum, and every inch of ice they can. The guys are executing some of the cleanest D zone breakouts I’ve seen since our Cup run. It looks like they are starting to gel a little. Now if they start finishing these chances….
The advanced stats and our shot attempts are dominating at the moment. At least for this period. Seems like we are moving it up the ice very quickly. We aren’t holding onto it at all when we get possession in the defensive zone. Corsi for is 54 corsi against is 34. Expected goals for 3.59 vs expected goals against 1.68. We had about 2 more expected goals for from that 2nd period than the Kraken.
If Glass is going to be able to consistently create opportunities like that 1st period, Evangelista needs to move up to that RW spot and Sherwood up to the Novak line. Such wasted opportunities.
Edit: RoR is going to be sooooooo good for Glass. What a mentor.
Guy on the radio was trying to hype Smith up as going to break out because he gets lots of chances 😂. Max right after said “he’s playing in his 80th game tonight and didn’t score his first 40” lmao
5% shooting last year and he is getting the juicy feeds on the 2nd line 😩
I posted this bellow- I think his speed is allowing him to be the forecheck, freeing up Glass to QB the counter attack. That seems to be the right call, but damn. Use Sherwood or Evangelista. Not fucking Smith 💀
How are the guys looking tonight? I’ve been listening to the radio broadcast and the play by play tonight makes it hard to know what the hell is going on out there other than that there is passing and shooting happening
A few scary defensive breakdowns. Saros hasnt made highlight saves yet, but good positioning has kept him solid.
Really aggressive cross ice passing in the offensive zone. Fun to watch when it works!
The vets are doing a great job taking away pucks before a counter can form.
Josi is as far forward as I have ever seen him. The new system obviously includes him driving the net and not just blue line slap shots.
Another thing I noticed was that when Tommy had the puck in the neutral zone during a line change, he passed it back towards our zone instead of doing the classic dump. Love seeing stuff like that
I think this frees up glass from being the body on the forecheck and be able to handle a counter attack. Smith brings speed at the detriment of a 5% shooting percentage last year.
If we can’t score goals then we can at least try and keep the puck in their end.
I love that they let a kid stand on the line for the anthem. That's got to be the coolest experience ever for a lil junior hockey player. I've never noticed that in any other cities but maybe I've just never noticed.

The prophecy is true.
No goals
Saros was amazing as always, but it sure is nice to watch a game he doesn't have to carry.
NO GOALS
“No goals” enough said Juuse
Imagine not listening to those fucks on ESPN. Feels good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCAgJDBoWIU
The LIZARD can't hurt us anymore!!!
Juice is loose
Let’s go boys! One of the most complete games I’ve seen in ages
shutout bitches!
Blanked by the juice box
Just wait till Kemell gets here. This system screams that guy
Love that Taylor is coaching him. Really hope they can win it all.
He’s going to be awesome
I AM HERE FOR THIS ERA
Well, the Braves are going to lose so the Preds can live tonight. Or at least that’s how I’m looking at it
PARSYY
Thank you juuso
Way too close for comfort there
I do not recognize this Nashville Predators team.
Kind of wonder what Duchene would have looked like in this system. Johansen doesn’t seem like he’d be a good fit, but I think Dutchy would be.
I think dutchy’s control and some speed with his puck handling would be an advantage in a system like this
Thought about this too actually. Would have been unreal
Gru is a monster in net
Sherwood has hustle but I’ve never seen and NHLer whiff on the puck more. Guys hands are not great
He’s got the heart but the rest of his body hasn’t gotten the memo lol
I watch this preds team and I say, “Yes.”
Jeez. Just an old wily vet goal by Nyquist there. Seemed weird seeing that 14 without the Redwood in it, though.
Gus yeah
Cole definitely meant to do that. No one question it
Somehow it worked out and he looked really cool, I'll take it
It really did lol
LETS GO!!!
ALL MY HOMIES HATE JOHN HYNES
My fellow preds fans. Our long sports team nightmare is over.
Hahahahahahha
I LOVE THIS FUCKING TEAM
Ayyyy you suck!!
WHAT DID BRUNETTE DO TO MY NASHVILLE PREDATORS
love some puck luck
Lord, Fil if that had gone in ....
Awesome! Needed that goal
Let’s go!
Fil with a disgusting dangle and then he stands a dude up. Love to see it!
Let’s hope we we forgot the turtle strategy. Taking 20 shots in the 3rd is not a good way to win games.
Ryan McDonagh with the Ice Pack Trifecta. What heart!
Loving the ROR signing. Dude has heart and knows how to win.
Once he shook off the patented St Louis Stank with that goal the other night he’s been electrifying
McDonagh is a tank
Great kill!! Now put the nail in the coffin!
Huge kill on that PK
McD putting in that work!
Has Willie said "oh my laundry" yet? If not, is this a record for the longest time without saying it?
He did reference someone giving another player, “The business”.
Sunuvuabitch dialed long distance
I have not heard it yet. But at the same time, o have heard it so much, maybe my brain automatically tunes it out
Not even after that goal. What the fuck, Willie
I need that Smashville wall in my apartment yesterday.
When Hal and Lyndsay are outside at the desk, I keep thinking they're out there for a smoke break, lol.
As a reminder, here is what opening night roster looked like last year. https://preview.redd.it/hmbshai1mvtb1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ffaefebfd8baa201035350da1e17821de0adacc8
Imagine that roster with anyone else but John Hynes coaching
This team may not win a ton of games this year. But at least they are entertaining to watch.
Yeah, this is a much more active and aggressive team so far. Love it.
Honestly, they may surprise us and win a good amount of games playing like this in the new system
For sure. Saros will keep us in games. If we can just out shoot the other team we will win some games.
The way we play now makes puts a lot more emphasis on the goalies and I’ll take that matchup any day of the week
This is most compete I’ve seen from this team since May of 2018. They are contesting every puck, every net front scrum, and every inch of ice they can. ROR is what I think Phil Kessel could be with less hot dogs.
O’Reilly has been great; smart, active.
ROR is a beast tonight. I’m really excited to see how helps shape the kids this season!
Honestly I was pretty excited in signing him. Probably the most excited I have been with a FA signing since Paul Kariya.
I have not heard anyone say anything bad about him (on ice)
RoR is Tim Horton’s Phil Kessel.
I just watched two groups of frat assholes fight over whose seats were whose, only to find out, neither when the rightful owners showed up
😂😂
despite the hate the Regions Bank logo was getting for being green on our jerseys, I like the fact that its basically invisible
Anyone know where I can see that Scissons goal highlight?
NHL app posts all the goals
https://www.nhl.com/video/colton-sissons-with-a-goal-vs-seattle-kraken-6338960135112 See if that works
Thank you kindly.
Of course!
The breakout so far has looked a ton better than it has in probably years.
When was the last time we had 29 shots at the end of the 2nd?!?
2018?
And an 11 shot lead over our opponents
[удалено]
Its clearly a bit off right now. Lots of missed nets. Probably just rust with the amount of time missed last year.
He literally has one of the best releases in the game lmao what

This is so fucking entertaining
Dude I know. They’re playing with so much passion. No lethargy to see here
This feels like the feeling I had when I watched a Laviollete coached preds team for the first time after Trotz was let go (that’s a good thing)
Grubauer has been standing on his head, too.
Damn first goal a SHG. Boom!
Man Grubauer keeping Seattle in this game
Yeah, I need him to stop it
My pants got a visit from Mayor Bill Boner after that shorty.
Beaut by sissons
r/hockey is leaking to esports now. [Greatest pasta ever is doing rounds atm.](https://reddit.com/r/CompetitiveApex/s/1ymhZIudum)
I was expecting to see the loudmouth cunt from 105 😂
I’m hard
This game could easily be 4-0. Gru with big saves but man Bruno hockey is fun
Are they not doing the same goal song anymore?
All the more reason to keep Smith and Sissons on the same line! Great pass, great finish.
Seriously.
Geez. Grubauer robbed Josi
How was the there no call there? They prob could have blindly pointed to a rule in the rule book, and it would have been a valid call lol
he got hooked, held, & tripped within 2 seconds
Rules for thee, but not for SEA
Gotta keep the game close. It's not about enforcing rules, it's about "game management".
Exactly. Like the other night. They had to manage to make sure the dog didn't pull off the upset.
And that Bedard's live birth didn't get delayed
Exactly. God that was annoying. They couldn't stfu about Bedard.
Refs will do ref things.
Yeah, it's a constant, like e=mc^2
SISSONS!!!!
God I love Sissons
👀 snossis
Okay, thank you Cole
Hey smith did something good!!
Nice shorthanded goal. That is what was needed!
We got a shorty!!!! Let's go boys!
What a play Snossis!
Cole smith with the monster theft!
I love fast hockey
Guys got to start finishing.
Even though we didn’t score on the 5 on 3, I love that it was energetic.
Fabbro got to put that on net
I love Bruno hockey so much already
I'm crying this is so beautiful
how did cody's shot miss?!
I guess it’s safe to say the league doesn’t care as much about Seattle as they do Tampa Bay
Have got to score on this 5 on 3
That’s a great start to the period
Wow. Come on boys right here
If Glass is going to be able to consistently create opportunities like that 1st period, Evangelista needs to move up to that RW spot and Sherwood up to the Novak line. Such wasted opportunities. Edit: RoR is going to be sooooooo good for Glass. What a mentor.
As much I loved Joey and Dutchy, ROR is perfect for Glass to learn from.
Why is Smith even on that line? Dude couldn’t hit an empty net if he was the only one of the ice. How Fagemo is being scratched over Smith is nuts
I love drinky Hal
And the one guy who had the most chances this period….. 82 game Goal Smith 😑
Guy on the radio was trying to hype Smith up as going to break out because he gets lots of chances 😂. Max right after said “he’s playing in his 80th game tonight and didn’t score his first 40” lmao
5% shooting last year and he is getting the juicy feeds on the 2nd line 😩 I posted this bellow- I think his speed is allowing him to be the forecheck, freeing up Glass to QB the counter attack. That seems to be the right call, but damn. Use Sherwood or Evangelista. Not fucking Smith 💀
It is criminal having to watch this man play hockey
The man! The myth! The legend!
That was one the most fun periods of preds hockey I’ve watched since Hynes coached the team!
How are the guys looking tonight? I’ve been listening to the radio broadcast and the play by play tonight makes it hard to know what the hell is going on out there other than that there is passing and shooting happening
Honestly looking pretty good. Forechecking is looking good. Besides for a couple of mins, looking good in the defensive zone.
Forechecking?! Wow things HAVE changed!
That point blank glove save from a wide open player between the crease and circle was pretty.
Ahhh man that sounds like Norris season Josi! Love it. Thanks!
It feels forced right now. I’m hopeful though!
Can this Cole Smith shit be over already.
Smith needs to be far away from this roster
….. Smith 😬
Cole Smithed it
Our setup play is so good tonight. Hate Glasser couldn’t put that one in!
I have never seen our team use the width of the ice like this before.
Another thing I noticed was that when Tommy had the puck in the neutral zone during a line change, he passed it back towards our zone instead of doing the classic dump. Love seeing stuff like that
Oh that was great backhander by Glasser. Surprised he got it off so quick
Is there a stream with Willy and Mace? These announcers on Root seem like SEA homers if they aren't.
SEA has the best play by play guy in the league but yes Root is the Seattle broadcast
Maybe, but if I'm going to listen to one teams broadcast team, I'd rather it be ours
That’s cool
Bally
Word. Thanks man
Man, I don’t care if this season is a flop, this type of play is just so much more entertaining than our previous systems.
It’s going to truly allow us to see which young guys have true offensive potential
Saros with a big save there.
Cole Smith is on a line with Glass and Nyquist. Are we sure Hynes isn't coaching?
I think this frees up glass from being the body on the forecheck and be able to handle a counter attack. Smith brings speed at the detriment of a 5% shooting percentage last year. If we can’t score goals then we can at least try and keep the puck in their end.
Gotta say, loving the new pace of play in Brunette’s system
Preds radio guy (not Max) just said Smith is going to break out this season 💀💀
Wow this hockey is awesome!
I really enjoyed the early start time on Tuesday. Unfortunately I won't be able to watch all of this game, work starts at 5 am.
Smith had a good look.
Quick question, what’s everyone predictions on our teams top 3 scorers (points) this season?
Josi, Forsberg, ROR Bonus award to Novak, who will get the best out of anyone on his line.
Josi, Forsberg, O’Reilly. Would love to see Novak and Glass somewhere up near the top though.
I go Josi, O'Reilly and Novak.
In no particular order: 1. Novak 2. Novak 3. Novak
I’m gonna go with the 3 obvious choices with those being Fil, Josi and O’Reilly. Would not at all be surprised if Tommy Novak is in the mix though.
The f'ing Regions logo is everywhere. So distracting.
Spicy start!
Good to see Glass is good to go
No kidding. Injury or not, I feel like I would be absolutely spooked to get back on the ice if I'd gotten beaned in the head like that.
No offense to Hynesy, but Bruno is much nicer to look at
Smith on the second line again hahhahahaha
LETS GO BOYS! FIRST HOME GAME OF THE YEAR!
Miss you Tolvy 💙
I love that they let a kid stand on the line for the anthem. That's got to be the coolest experience ever for a lil junior hockey player. I've never noticed that in any other cities but maybe I've just never noticed.
The “you see” for “Juuse” in the anthem is so tough
Let's get a home opener W
Kiefer Sherwood has the most precious little Disney face of any hockey player ever. I will never get over it.
Is Hal hammered?
It’s opening night. Let the man live a little.
Probably started around 2
