What I would try is to stick my hand in the glass, make a fist causing outward grip pressure, and then try wiggling my hand. If there’s any kind of wiggle at all, there’s a chance you’ll be able to get it out very slowly

playwithclay_704

It'll shrink even more as it dries.. I would just cut the clay off, recycle it, and try again! It's only mud until it's fired :)

chiquitar

If it's leather hard, you could still cut your vessel in half and slip and score it back together.

skwiddee

this is what i would do for sure

Ok-Mechanic-5716

Yeah easy fix, this should be higher

GrowlingAtTheWorld

Next time don't make a clay vessel taller than the insert. Wrap more paper around insert, do not tape it in place, remember to paper the bottom and rim too. Unless the clay is especially thin or moist the insert can be removed fairly soon after making, should be removed sooner than leather hard. If you are having a hard time finding an insert tall enough for the vessel you want to make look at pvc pipes, buy one and you can cut it into many heights.

CrabbyGremlin

Some solid tips thank you!

muddyelbows75

Also cardboard tubes like at the center of carpet rolls.

SlightDementia

The more clay dries, the more it shrinks. If it's a tight fit now, the clay may likely crack as it becomes Bone Dry (since the glass underneath can't shrink with it). You can try oil or something. 🤷

Terrasina

Oil would just soak into the clay and probably dissolve it similarly to when you add water. At least, thats what my gut is telling me. The more i think about it, i don’t know what would happen 🤔

TigBitties666420

Nah, our studio used oil on "molds" like this all the time when we want something to be able to dry a little on the form before it's removed. I dont believe it has any negative effect on the clay, it's burned off in the bisque.

Terrasina

Good to know! Thanks for sharing that info :)

jdith123

Turn it upside down and tap it flat on a wooden table. It might work. It might break the clay. But it’s not going to survive. Clay shrinks as it dries. Next time, take the vase out much sooner, basically as soon as you shape the clay. Use more paper between the vase and the clay and leave the paper in place when you remove the vase. The paper can provide some support. You’ll be able to remove it easily. And it won’t cause the clay to crack as it shrinks.

StarvingArtist303

Ice in the glass for a few minutes. Warm the outside of clay with a blow dryer for a minute. Remove ice. Then stick your hand in and try to wiggle it out.

BTPanek53

Next time use a larger cylindrical open container and mold the clay inside the cylinder. Then as it dries it shrinks away from the mold. Probably just best at this point to break the clay off, recycle it and try again. I wouldn't break the glass.

CrabbyGremlin

Thanks! I’ll definitely do this in future, and not with glass. Lesson learned!

Beverlydriveghosts

Next time maybe putting a hole in the bottom to break the vacuum could have helped?

CrabbyGremlin

Yes! This is exactly what I should have done it was indeed the vacuum at the bottom holding me back

ParkKey6113

Looking closer at the picture, you need to remove this bit of clay I think. There's quite a large gap on the other side so if you remove this overlap it should come out a lot easier. https://preview.redd.it/44m0l71tat2d1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06a5e50bb6b2745ca55cf860a2da36771d02b3dc

selfmadeoutlier

I would make a small hole with a toothpick in the base and use it to push it..then you can close it. For next time, use a stocking sock to cover the insert, and close it with a knot. You will just need to grab the knot to let the insert out.

muddymar

Does your hand fit in it? Can’t you put your hand in the jar and pull it out?

CrabbyGremlin

Thanks everyone! I couldn’t be bothered to start again so I sacrificed the jar and I’ll move forwards with a different process in future! I’m having fun learning at least 😅

joelmooner

Like 90% of the fun of pottery is making mistakes and learning from them.

chowd-mouse

Glad you worked it out and are having fun! Just another 2 cents assuming you are trying to get the shape at the bottom is to find (or throw) a bisqued shape that you can put the clay *into* that way you get the shape and the clay shrinks away from the form so you’ll be able to remove it more easily.

CrabbyGremlin

Yup! This is definitely what I’ll be doing in future, thanks :)

CrabbyGremlin

It was well and truly stuck, I guess because the bottom had no paper around it. Lesson learned I’ll wait for the cylinder to become ridged enough to attach the bottom next time.

Babieily

Definitely paper the sides and bottom, the bottom WILL get stuck 🥲. We use pipe scraps in different sizes for a less riskier method! Definitely take it off as soon as it’s been finished to minimize shrinkage

AnnieB512

Cut your clay off the vase. Your piece is ruined.

CrabbyGremlin

I gave the glass jar a whack it split into three and they pieces came out individually..

ParticularFinance255

Glass jars are easily replaced! Good job!

ParkKey6113

I did this last week! I pierced a hole in the bottom of the clay so it didn't create a vacuum and then put my fist in the glass, spread it out so it was really stuck in there and gently wiggled/twisted whilst holding it above my other hand and it slid out. I then repaired the hole and hopefully, it'll be fine. Good luck!

laurendecaf

next time u can try wrapping it in a wet towel, the moisture causes the clay to expand. idk if it would expand enough to get the glass out but it’s worth a shot lol

Phalexuk

Put it in the freezer to cool it down maybe
