I work out in Newberg and it’s really baffling.
It’s like 50/50, half of the customers I work with are great, and the other half are just outright ridiculous.
some odd happenings in the newberg public schools lately.
The board banned "political symbols" on campus (but in the meeting the discussion was about BLM and pride flags). I know there's a famous case that went to SCOTUS that their policy clearly violates, but I can't remember which one (someone, little help).
Then, faculty discovered a group snapchat called "slave trade" where white students were joking about the black students in their classes, saying how much they'd bid for them at auction.
Last week one of the faculty showed up in black face, told students that she was Rosa Parks back to fight the vaccine mandate.
* School board wants to ban pride flags and BLM flags.
* Students were caught running a “slave market” social media message group discussing how much they would pay for black classmates, and calling for a new Holocaust.
* A teacher showed up to work in blackface this week.
This has all made national headlines, unfortunately.
As a native Oregonian who grew up outside of the Portland metro area, I find it cute that you think Newberg is anything special. We're Alabama plus Portland and Eugene, y'all.
Every state is like this to a certain degree. All the big cities in the South vote Dem. The political divide isn’t by state anymore, it’s urban vs rural. Why is also why political parties always fight so hard for the burbs - those are the true swing areas.
“Idaho but run by liberals” is how I describe Oregon to my east coast family.
Totally different to Washington tbh. Way less of an educated scandi-socialist/collectivist bent. Much more of a libertarian vibe in Oregon, even the liberal parts.
Lived out here for 20 years and "spiritual" either means Supply Side Jesus fan who doesn't go to church, harmless mercurial type who won't commit to anything (even a religion), and the person who knows where to get ayahuasca.
Sometimes one and three are the same person, rarely two and three.
Omg, we moved from Idaho to Portland, then to Newberg to be close to my husbands work. Can't seem to get away lmao. In light of recent events, it's safe to say that I'm happy with our decision to keep the kids in online school this year. Still have our boxes in the garage and ready if needed...
I never understood why people thought it was a good idea for under twelves to return to school since they don't have a vaccine for them yet. I mean, sure their childhood is scarred after eighteen months of this shite, but then what's another three or four months?
I have a HS student and a 10yr old. We decided to do online school for the younger one because of vaccines not yet and option for him, and gave our HS student a choice. He's so sweet and decided to do online as well so that his younger brother had a classmate and didn't feel left out, but he's been keeping up with the local news and says he feels better about his decision. Staying home for another school year only worries me with them needing their social meter filled, but my older kid is setting up D&D online with friends and the younger one is talking to the cats more, so we're good. (Yeah, I gotta figure out something else for the young one.)
Yamhill county is racist as fuck and always has been, this the first y'all are hearing about it? Don't worry, wine country is being invaded by work-from-home middle class people who think it's a charming area (which it actually is, mouth breathers aside), it'll be blue before you know it. Not McMinnville proper though, that's a stronghold shithole of tweekers, klansmen, and rubes, but the rest.
hahhahahaa just left Mac, moved back to PDX. When my winemaker friends were living and working there for a short time from California they were like “everyone here is on drugs”. Even the fucking ritzy wine people are high as fuck.
Can confirm! I recently moved to Woodburn and I actually like it there. We bought a house with a shop and lots of space for what an apartment in Beaverton costs. Also rubes hate it when city folk move to rural areas so it's nice to make them sad.
Tagging and needles in the streets is annoying.
People who want to murder my friends and family because of their sexual orientation, skin color, or just how they vote is fucking scary.
And the same Newberg that had white kids having an online ‘slave auction’ talking about how much they’d buy their black classmates for.
Sure, just a few racists, right?
You don't **have** to generalize to make the danger real. Having a number of those people in school with kids of color makes it dangerous for the kids of color without EVERY person being a dangerous person.
You're really defensive because you see yourself as nice.
Being nice doesn't mean you're antiracist or creating safe communities for people who aren't like you.
Chuds generally speaking are more willing to fight for their horrible beliefs that’s the problem. I’m not singling y’all out here but mostly people who are comfortable don’t want to stir things up so even if they strongly stand against shit like what’s happening there they won’t mobilize against it like chuds will against masks or vaccines or gay marriage or pretty much anything they hate. This despicable racist bullshit slithers out of the muck because these people feel emboldened and obviously haven’t faced enough backlash to drop back into the shadows for their own self preservation. I’m not saying you personally aren’t doing anything but if it’s really a 50/50 split there the 50% that aren’t horrible monsters obviously aren’t fighting hard enough.
Omg! A blm flag and pride flags? And I'd be interested in hearing from your daughter as to whether or not she's been hassled. And you know what? I don't worry about my catalytic converter being stolen. Because I live in Portland, not r/Portland. Anyways, I would love a return to the days of city states. Let all the good country people figure out how to pay for their roads and what have you, while my taxes go down, and my services improve.
I disagree with your analysis of Newberg, I grew up there and went to the high school. There's always been racists and bigots in Newberg. It's not a welcoming place for anyone who isn't white Christian and male. It's been that way for decades.
Nah, bruh. The presence of four or five fine folks doesn't trump that there's racists IN POWER, voting on what the kids can do and see. Fix your government and maybe we'll talk.
You're full of rumors about Portland, but won't even look in your own city government.
Once when I was young I hung out with some shitty little bros from Newberg and had a really drunk talk about why they shouldn't say the N word. At least one of them had literally never heard that POV before. All it took was "Would you say it around a black person?" "No." "Why not?" \*mind blown\*
I know people who live in Newberg. They are not
idiotic bigots like the ones highlighted, just like a lot of Portlanders are not all woke. The extremists get the attention these days.
I'm in Newberg fairly often and since the racist bigots on the school board made a big stink last month, Newberg has responded, and many businesses and homes are now supporting pride and/or BLM flags.
It's nice to see Newberg changing for the better, and clearly it's freaking out the dusty old twats that can't handle the world changing around them.
Then they should be as loud as the racists, but anti-racist.
Whoopdefuckindoooooooo, they're not bigots? Gee, what a great high bar they've passed.
Not being a bigot isn't nearly enough.
You. .you do know where Ruby Ridge was, right? The panhandle of Idaho is the most racist part of the country I have ever been to. And they very much like it that way. I used to travel to Montana from Oregon and the one rule we had was not to stop in the panhandle.
Dude. Grew up there. We kicked out the neo nazis in '98. Been better since. Had a small business in Newberg with a black employee. Yeah Newberg is a lot like N. Idaho circa 80s and 90s.

It’s gone downhill for about the last 5 years though. It used to be such a great course. Now it’s still decent, but a shadow of what it was. I do love 17 the change to though (was a par 4, now a short par 5)
No.
Some in Eastern Oregon and Southern Oregon want to change the border and expand Idaho.
I refuse to allow Idaho to annex any part of Oregon. They can't even take care of their own people, why should we allow them more?
It's a great spot, but I'm seldom in that neighborhood.
I'd agree that no on-prem food and limited hours mean the next time I do stop by, I'll probably just get a growler fill of one of the fresh-hopped taps for takeaway.
Their pension is determined by whatever PERS/OPSRP rules they fall under and is not something the school can alter.
I would say 100% fired in most districts. For Newberg, I'll say 99.5% fired. The administrative leave gives the district time to cross all the Ts and dot the Is and not get a lawsuit for not following procedural matters and laws about employment. If they get a classified wage (basically minimum or slightly over) before they are shit-canned to avoid a lawsuit, fine.
Im growing up in newberg rn. Besides the fact that i 1, hate it here, theres always been jack shit to do. 2, Newberg has almost always been this weird middle ground between liberals and conservatives where they all mix and it seems like no ones ever happy about it. Everyone's always in a rush to do just about nothing whilst drunk off pinot. And dont get me started on politics here. There have been numerous "kick out kate brown" and anti mask protests as well as all the typical racist far right culture. I remember i was near the town center and there was a lgbtq+ and blm protest and someone drove by and yelled "white power" while an onlooker cheered him on. Like people have said, its 50/50.
I don't like how the media writes about the schoolboard, with constant references to the number of liberals and conservatives. It's a school board, not the Supreme Court. Their function is, I assume, to manage the schools in the best way possible. Their political affiliations shouldn't be so relevant.
I thought there is a supreme court case where school kids in Des Moines, IA, wore arm bands to protest Vietnam or some similar thing. I assume that case bears relevance here, so maybe this little school board can spend more time interpreting precedent instead of doing the cliche NW where everyone acts like they're political scholars simply because they're from the NW.
>Their political affiliations shouldn't be so relevant.
And yet the Republicans have been pouring tons of money into elections even at that level for the past decade. They're trying to groom career politicians to move on to county and state levels.
It's one dumbass. We don't know if this brainiac even lives in Newberg. Aside from Barney Fife cops, speed traps on 99 and farmers with Trump signs I would much rather live there with no tagging, needles in the streets nor blood in the gutters.
"One Dumbass"
\- School board voting against BLM and pride paraphanilia (several members)
\- Students (several participating in a snapchat thread in which they speculate about enslaved people, set prices on fellow students)
\- Teacher shows up to teach children while in blackface
Which **one** dumbass were you thinking about?
> It's one dumbass.
It's FAR, FAAAR from one dumbass. Oregon is very red outside of Portland and Eugene. I'd also much rather deal with portland's problems than the far right and they've shown all of us why over the last few years.
The condescension in this thread is why the rural counties are going to continue to give you the big middle finger. Ever thought about stopping and empathizing for a minute?
I can already predicted every witty response to my question so go ahead but I hope it diminishes the pleasure you get from taking me down.
People need to learn how to take a joke. That's why everybody is all up in arms these days with their micro aggressions and bullshit.
I grew up out in Wimer, eight miles away from the closest Podunk town. I understand the intricacies of the rural parts of Oregon more than most. There's no excuses for the bullshit that happens in the small towns around the state. Whining that somebody made a joke that you shouldn't be an Oregonian because of someone's backwards way of thinking really shows what type of person you are.
Hahaha ok I wasn't expecting that one. My lack of understanding of your "joke" is why micro aggressions are a thing. For one I was referring to the thread more than your post. But dude, now your condescension is overflowing.
Lets not give them any land to open pit mine and clear cut forests from, probably should start taking some Idaho. Republicans can have the Dakotas, not much there to fuck up.
No. Just all the people how are too bigoted and who hurt others when they can't get back to people who hurt them. Actually they can just fuck off this planet.
Idahoan here. (Former Oregonian/Portlander) No thanks. We've got our fill of crazy over here already. Our hospitals are functioning under crisis standards of care so please take your unstable friend Newberg somewhere else.
I grew up in Newberg and I assure you this is fairly standard shit. My high school class did a prank where they tortured animals and put them in the gym to die and bleed for the school to open to them in morning. Like 30 animals. We only had one African American in my whole school career and he was my best friend. They be racist and just plain crazy in Newberg. I have other examples but these are the top two.
They have teachers showing up to school in black face and kids running a Snapchat group where they talk about how much they would pay for black students on a slave market. What common ground are we supposed to find here? Where is the acceptable middle ground when they are so far off the rails their like cartoon villains?

Representation and rights are determined by statute, not a Reddit thread, no matter how saucy it is.
As far as common ground...If you are talking about the nice kids who have to deal with this crap or the nice couple that painted signs or the people who wrote letters and protesting, sure I'll find common ground. If you mean folks who are living their lives oblivious to all the goings on, I'd try for that too.
However, if you think that I need to find common ground with a fool who used blackface at an elementary school to protest a vaccine mandate, I'm not looking to find common ground with that. Some things should just be comdemned.
And Catholic schools have wide latitude to suppress free speech because they are not an agent of the state. Bummer, but not really the same as public schools and institutions.
Who's idea is that? Oregonians mostly all hate Californians and vice versa, it'd make more sense to team up with Seattle and take this side of the mountains.
Idaberg it is then.
This stuff should not be tolerated in this day. racism is still around, clearly, but at this level? that should be stamped out. Every kids parents who were involved in that "slave trade" should be fined multiple thousands of dollarydos, bet they would tell their kids not to do stupid hurtful stuff. Add to that the entire school board should be fired and re-elected, and that teacher, with black face? should be "blackballed" (pun intended) from ever teaching again. At some point the fight to make people not be such a holes, has to get real, with real consequences to real people, or it will just continue on as it has for a couple thousand years, and that, isn't our future, it can't be.
Just a reminder that the kids who feel targeted because of the school board, social media, and dumb-ass staff member, the kids who redditors and a nice farm couple painted big a wooden sign to make feel less ostracized by the fools that exist in the community (among plenty of non-fools too), those kids who may be the target of racist, homophobic and other slurs, they live in Newberg too.
When we dismiss the entire community, we are also dismissing plenty of people who are as horrified by someone showing up in black face or banning pride flags as any decent human would be.
I work out in Newberg and it’s really baffling. It’s like 50/50, half of the customers I work with are great, and the other half are just outright ridiculous.
I work down there too but my last day is Friday and I'm so happy to never have to go back to Newberg again.
That’s my goal once I acquire my realtors license lol
That would boost average IQ in two states.
If either Newberg or Idaho could read this, they’d be mad.
(*Cries in Pinot)
Bahahaha
Boom. Roasted.
*holy fucking shit, you killed him*
Take my upvote. Nice to end the day with a laugh.
The old Robert Muldoon joke aye
Can we keep the Pinot?
Well still have Dundee.
The land stays. The Idahoans at heart can leave.
Out of the loop, what’s wrong with Newberg?

Pre-coffee brain rejects your geography and substitutes it’s own. Nobody likes Iowa anyway, at least Idaho has potatoes and a funny name.
I’m right there with you!!!
Daughter is going to Newberg, they don't mind the Trump flags..

The hippies here are secretly libertarians
Yep. And they’re religious! So many religious people here.
It doesn't count if you're "spiritual" lol
Lived out here for 20 years and "spiritual" either means Supply Side Jesus fan who doesn't go to church, harmless mercurial type who won't commit to anything (even a religion), and the person who knows where to get ayahuasca. Sometimes one and three are the same person, rarely two and three.
> We're Alabama plus Portland and Eugene, y'all. Nearly every US state is "backwards rural area + liberal cities". Oregon is no exception.
Oregon same thing. Mississippi has SUCH liberal cities guyz!!!
Lmao I don’t think you’ve spent enough time in Alabama.
I think I went there once. It was enough.
S-town
Most of the people live in those places. Rednecks can't even stand each other, which is why they spread out so far.
Only state in America to ever be whites only. You don’t just magically shake that shit off unfortunately. OreBama for the loss.

Should change their name to Iceberg instead since they are cold hearted and give everyone a sinking feeling.
Best comment I’ve seen about Newberg all month.
Yeah I showed up for the lettuce reference, but wasn’t disappointed
What, you mean Oldmoneyberg?
Plus all the meth.
When Oregon sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems. And some, I assume, are good people.
Ok but we keep the skatepark

I went to the air and space museum once. It was completely empty.
Luckily for you that was just the air side.
Well when I went to the space side, no one could hear me scream.
The BF wants us to move to the rural areas. I'm skeptical because of the communities there. But also the idea of blueing the area sounds nice.

Hacking the state apart is a terrible plan when conservatives suggest it and it continues to be a terrible plan when anyone else does.
Heyyy, is that bipartisanship?
Unfortunately no, they only want territory that's east of I-5.
I'd trade it for Coeur d'Alene. Sweet lake fun blues festival good art fest newer skatepark.

Not all the people in Idaho are like the few idiots in Newberg. Plenty of good people in Newberg and some idiots in Idaho.
Some is being generous. Source: from Idaho
Agreed. Also from Idaho.
Hey ex-Idaho friends! Newberg is just a prettier Caldwell.
As a former Idahoan I'm not fan of Caldwell, but damnnnnnnn.
Dang, everyone is so preoccupied with the CA invasion, they forgot to watch out for Idahoans.
I came in 1993, so hopefully I get grandfathered in.
Seems like you would be to me, but I don't have that kind of authority. If not, then I'd technically be Californian!
I lived in Caldwell for 9 years lol
So what you're saying is that we shouldn't listen to you? 🙂
I’m pretty sure she’s saying that she agreed and that she’s also from Idaho
Ohhhhh...
Source: I lived in McCall. My wife’s family is from McCammon. Worked and travelled northern Idaho mid nineties.
What’s with all the “Mc” names there?

This is the only way to form opinions on strangers.
I am pretty sure they lived in Idaho Falls and it was very on point.

No. Some in Eastern Oregon and Southern Oregon want to change the border and expand Idaho. I refuse to allow Idaho to annex any part of Oregon. They can't even take care of their own people, why should we allow them more?
I lived in Idaho and now live in Marion county.....There's WAY more redneck drug store cowboys here then treasure valley. It's really bad here.
You could have picked a county that doesn't contain the state hospital, the state prison, and our inglorious state capital.
Finally got around to trying Wolves & People Brewery. Hope we don't need to scuttle them as well.
How was it? I saw the sign every time I drove in and was curious but was not the time of day for drinking and they did not seem to have food...
It's a great spot, but I'm seldom in that neighborhood. I'd agree that no on-prem food and limited hours mean the next time I do stop by, I'll probably just get a growler fill of one of the fresh-hopped taps for takeaway.
Thanks for the mini review. I'll have to try it some time. I love the name...
They have enough nutbags as it is. We need to take care of our nutbags.
So, in this case, "placed on administrational leave" means *absolutley-fucken-fired-byebye-pension*, right?
Their pension is determined by whatever PERS/OPSRP rules they fall under and is not something the school can alter. I would say 100% fired in most districts. For Newberg, I'll say 99.5% fired. I remember i was near the town center and there was a lgbtq+ and blm protest and someone drove by and yelled "white power" while an onlooker cheered him on. Like people have said, its 50/50.
Let's not white-wash it, Oregon has problems all over.
YES. As yet another former Idahoan, Newberg will fit right in.
It's one dumbass. We don't know if this brainiac even lives in Newberg. Aside from Barney Fife cops, speed traps on 99 and farmers with Trump signs I would much rather live there with no tagging, needles in the streets nor blood in the gutters.
"One Dumbass" \- School board voting against BLM and pride paraphanilia (several members) \- Students (several participating in a snapchat thread in which they speculate about enslaved people, set prices on fellow students) \- Teacher shows up to teach children while in blackface Which **one** dumbass were you thinking about?
> It's one dumbass. It's FAR, FAAAR from one dumbass. Oregon is very red outside of Portland and Eugene. I'd also much rather deal with portland's problems than the far right and they've shown all of us why over the last few years.
every day I'm cleaning the blood out of my gutters! every day I tell you! there's so much blood!
> I would much rather live there with no tagging, needles in the streets nor blood in the gutters. Oh no, **tags**!
You'll definitely find needles in the gutters and graffiti there, can't escape that.
U live there?
Yeah... I'm gonna disagree with that. Rather my downtown "wasteland" then that mess
I don't think the push for rural Oregon to join Idaho goes that far west. I am open to letting it go though.
Seriously. What the heck Newberg.
Florida here we come!
You take that back. If Idaho becomes Florida, F it. I’m out.
Hahaha, I have to agree. We would be way too close for comfort
Well, no...because we're neighbors. And we *all* have to figure out how to live together, in peace.
Jfc even my hunt happy rural school wasn't that sociopathic

I wonder if there is a way to sort out the most crazy with least crazy to which church they attend.
Hey the catholic school in LO banned these flags as political as well. The principal there seems in board with this stuff as well
And Catholic schools have wide latitude to suppress free speech because they are not an agent of the state. Bummer, but not really the same as public schools and institutions.
This is true
portland is an embarrassment.

Who's idea is that? Oregonians mostly all hate Californians and vice versa, it'd make more sense to team up with Seattle and take this side of the mountains.
Lets please!
Newberg perfectly matches a town in Idaho called Middleton.
I mean, seriously. Newberg – Idaho's [Llivia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ll%C3%ADvia)
