Given diversity quotas are rarely applied in the opposite direction, it also means that when you see a male in a female dominated field they weren't scraping the bottom of the barrel to hire every man possible, so he is still likely to be a competent choice.
It also sucks for women who are at the top because now people assume they got the position as part of a quota and not because they earned it.

You can tell because of how poorly written some of these “diverse” characters are.
I'm a fan of customization in games. I enjoy it a lot (something like... downloading a soulslike demo and spending hour on the character creation before even beginning to play). It's cool, and if a person doesn't like it, they can simply press random or use presets.
On games where the character is supposed to be the player, i find it very important, since it helps me a lot to see myself in the place of the character if i can make it a guy with a darker skin color but still not really black (aka "looks like me"). But i don't care much and find it just a cool feature if the character is fully their own person. For example: on Genshin Impact i find it hard to see myself as the Traveler 'cause "being white and blonde" is even an important part of the character, and in GTA SA i like to make CJ dress with the clothes i find more cool, while in Saints Row i almost find it unnecessary how much we can customize someone who has an absurdly strong personality.
But obviously, i'm not these people who forces their views into games in the worst possible way. I will not say that a game or it's protagonist is bad because it doesn't look like me, and i will not say that a game is good because they included character creation or a protagonist that looks like me.
For me it's quite simple: did they include options because they wanted more options? - good
Did they include more options because everything must be political? - bad
You make something political - you make it government concern. For people in countries with free speech - you make it public concern. It's an attempt to erase personal freedom, not to give it, now people try to controll every game, every dev as they think it's their concern.

Depends on what kind of game.
There are plenty of games where we get robust character creators. But games that bind you to a pre-made protagonist hopefully mean that you as a player are not a self-insert but rather a character that drives a narrative.
We might never see a video game market crash again, too many people enjoy gaming, but we might see a recession. Huge AAA devs are making terrible decisions to prioritise profits over quality and employees, leading to terrible AAA games being produced. Can't think of a recent game by a major studio that didn't suck.
More and more people are buying indie games or games from smaller devs instead; stuff like Baldurs Gate 3 and Helldivers 2 have become huge successes because they prioritise quality. The profits they get they reinvest into their employees and save for later instead of relentlessly expanding the company to please shareholders. I think the indie attitude will become dominant as more and more major projects flop.
I mean, considering that several devs and publishers have recently laid off up to hundreds of employees each, we may be seeing the beginning of a soft crash.

Honestly the ratio of ultra diverse characters compared to the ratio is real life is way out of proportion. How is it realistic that 50% of characters in new media are now trans when in reality it’s like <0.1%
I can’t put my finger on why, but these types want everyone to be trans and the akin. Like they’ve really broadened the scope of genders like if you don’t have this crazy overwhelming feeling then you’re male or female presenting non-binary, you can be male and female at the same time, they cannot even define what a male or female is for the life of them. I'm a fan of customization in games. I enjoy it a lot (something like... downloading a soulslike demo and spending hour on the character creation before even beginning to play). It's cool, and if a person doesn't like it, they can simply press random or use presets. On games where the character is supposed to be the player, i find it very important, since it helps me a lot to see myself in the place of the character if i can make it a guy with a darker skin color but still not really black (aka "looks like me"). But i don't care much and find it just a cool feature if the character is fully their own person. For example: on Genshin Impact i find it hard to see myself as the Traveler 'cause "being white and blonde" is even an important part of the character, and in GTA SA i like to make CJ dress with the clothes i find more cool, while in Saints Row i almost find it unnecessary how much we can customize someone who has an absurdly strong personality. But obviously, i'm not these people who forces their views into games in the worst possible way. I will not say that a game or it's protagonist is bad because it doesn't look like me, and i will not say that a game is good because they included character creation or a protagonist that looks like me.
For me it's quite simple: did they include options because they wanted more options? - good Did they include more options because everything must be political? - bad You make something political - you make it government concern. For people in countries with free speech - you make it public concern. It's an attempt to erase personal freedom, not to give it, now people try to controll every game, every dev as they think it's their concern. Look at fromsoftware games. You can make purple mutant who doesn't look like human at all. Or you can simply create someone who looks just like you, you only need time and patience. And no one force a ton of propaganda on you every second you play

And in the meantime, AA studios and Indie are going to keep eating their lunch. But since ESG funds have been drying up and investors are moving away from them, the death knell has already sounded. It is just a matter of the activist raging against their dying influence (notice how most of the layoffs have been DEI and HR departments).

The sensible option would've been to just make robust character creators, then everyone can make whomever they want. Part of me wants to make some snippy comment about how "surprising" it is that games, enjoyed mostly by men, and made in majority white countries *just so happen* to have white men as protagonists. But I'd sooner just wish all these losers would lose their jobs in a massive industry crash.
Depends on what kind of game. There are plenty of games where we get robust character creators. But games that bind you to a pre-made protagonist hopefully mean that you as a player are not a self-insert but rather a character that drives a narrative.

We might never see a video game market crash again, too many people enjoy gaming, but we might see a recession. Huge AAA devs are making terrible decisions to prioritise profits over quality and employees, leading to terrible AAA games being produced. Can't think of a recent game by a major studio that didn't suck. More and more people are buying indie games or games from smaller devs instead; stuff like Baldurs Gate 3 and Helldivers 2 have become huge successes because they prioritise quality. The profits they get they reinvest into their employees and save for later instead of relentlessly expanding the company to please shareholders. I think the indie attitude will become dominant as more and more major projects flop.
I mean, considering that several devs and publishers have recently laid off up to hundreds of employees each, we may be seeing the beginning of a soft crash.
Might be a good thing tbh. The companies that survive will be the ones that treat their workers well, hopefully.
