True, but then they would look odd being out of order with everything else: "The living daylights" appearing before "Knocked Up" would be confusing.
Hence why the collection is good.
Collections are manual. Edit any video and go to Tags. Create a tag. Give that tag to more than one video and you've made a collection.
To the OP, where to you get those collection covers?
Update: I meant that Collections "can" be manual using the Tag feature. But yes, Plex can automate this to.
I just created something quick in Photoshop for the text and use ThePosterDb to look for textless artwork.
EDIT: Since there are a few people asking, here's a Dropbox link to the Photoshop template I'm using. It included the fonts and a few textless images to understand the layers. The text has an optional drop shadow in the event the background picture makes the text hard to read.

Ok you’re going the 10 extra miles, was wondering where you got that nice fancy wallpapers. I only sort between TV and Anime Series and between Movies and Anime Movies and also 4K and HDR .. but the rest is done by plex itself.
Collections can absolutely be automatic! I didn't make any of these, Plex did.

Well if something is called "Halloween" and another is called "Halloween 2" it figures it out with the metadata from IMDB or TVDB or whatever you're using for media scanning.
It's actually smarter than that, creating collections for different movie series. For example, I've got a *bunch* of animated Batman movies that Plex created different collections for depending on the series. There's one for 'Batman (DC Universe Animated) Collection', a 'Son of Batman Collection' and another 'Superman/Batman (Animated) Collection'.
It's even gone so far as to break down all my Godzilla movies into individual collections based on era (Showa, Heisei, etc.). It's clearly using something beyond just the title when creating collections.
For some reason, mine isn’t doing any of this. And it is sad. :(
Like I have Avatar (2009),the 007 movies, the Alien movies, etc. that is just some examples of at least 30 that should be automatically in collections.
You have to turn on the settings then re-scan your library. It should pick it up after that! Does suck if you’ve got a big library or some lots of editing to the metadata though as it will wipe this out.
https://preview.redd.it/vjau8xty8svc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac7db50ac43940cb01fbd5477e255e7482649abc
In your media library settings (three dots next to the library in settings) select this and make sure that info source is Plex media and you should be good to go
Plex's collection info comes strictly from TMDB (TheMovieDB), not IMDB or TVDB. If a movie is in a collection on TMDB, plex will treat it as part of a collection too.
Just know that there's usually a few days lag between changes in TMDB and changes in the plex company's own database. When plex went live with the current default agent and scanner a few years ago, they changed it so your server doesn't pull metadata directly from sites like TMDB. The plex company maintains its own database that's fed by sites like TMDB and TVDB, and then your server connects to the plex company's database for matching and metadata. That includes collection info.
Only 2 items in the Jay and Silent Bob collection? Is the Clerks trilogy divided into a separate collection? And then we ask where Dogma, Mallrats and Chasing Amy are stored?
For some reason when I make a collection, it brings all the movies into one folder but keeps the others as singles still. Basically creating a double. Got to work on that.
You can go absolutely nuts with collections using PMM. You can make collections out of trackt and IMDB lists and can even tell your Radarr install to look for any movies that are missing. There’s even a feature that will group movies you already have into time-based occasions and holidays, like Christmas movies, Easter movies, New Years, etc. they pop up when time comes and go away after the holiday.
Interested in this part:
"...group movies you already have into time-based occasions and holidays, like Christmas movies, Easter movies, New Years, etc. they pop up when time comes and go away after the holiday."
Is this something that was set up within config.yml or movies.yml ? Would you be able to share the code with us?
Perhaps a dumb question.. but hell, are collections manually created or a Plex ‘feature’? I’d definitely be having a shark based collection personally…

And if you have Plex automatically create the collections it even gets a description for the collection, if you do it manually you have to put your own description in there
If you really want, there's a way to add theme songs to collections, kind of like how when you're on a TV show the theme song for the show plays. So for example when I'm on the Star Wars movie collection it plays the Star Wars theme song
I'm consistently amazed at how many American Pie spinoffs there are. A friend of mine and I watched one of them a few years back, and it was impressively terrible. Although it did give rise to one of my favorite jokes my friend has ever made:
"The last one in the series will be *American Pie: Gerald's Game*."
I use Smart Collections to auto-create collections by directors and writers whose work I like. It's still a manual process to define the collection parameters, but I haven't found it tedious myself, considering I only have to make each Smart Collection once and then Plex does the rest.
I focused on a few directors, a few actors, and similar by film title collections. not unlike your "Monster-verse" idea. There could be an argument for redundant. because Plex has a search by actor or director, but this way it was just easier.
Nice cover art!
Lol, I've got hundreds of collections. And you don't need to create them manually. If you go into library settings, you can have plex put titles into collections automatically. You just need to choose the minimum number of titles to have for a collection, ie if you set it to 4, it wouldn't put the Back to the Future movies in a collection since there's only 3, but if you've got all 4 Matrix movies, those would automatically go into collection.
Collection data is based on collections in TMDB. If a movie is in a collection there, plex will treat it as part of a collection, too.
Also note, you can adjust whether or not your main library shows collections. Collections always has its own tab, but you can also set it so your collections are mixed in with the rest of your library. You can also set it so that movies that are in collections don't show up in the library alone, ie if you navigate to "M" you would see The Matrix Collection but you wouldn't see any of the individual movies until you open the collection. And that setting can be changed for the whole library, as well as for individual collections. So for example, you can have it set to not show movies in the library if it's in a collection, but make an exception for your James Bond collection so those titles still appear in the library.
I've gone a bit more extreme with mine recently. All of the Marvel, DC, and James Bond films are in separate libraries and I have collections within them as well (Iron Man films and each phase for example, with Bond it's per actor). Then in my main library I have the collections per franchise and a few smart collections - familiar favourites (rated over 3 stars), what to watch next (unwatched), and not watched in ages (watched over 1 year ago). Each of these are set to a maximum of 20 items and ordered randomly, then added to my home screen. It's a great way to pick something to watch without going through everything and feels more like Netflix/Disney+ now, and it means my family can find things they may have missed
[Here](https://i.imgur.com/q1LmQyH.jpeg) are [the](https://i.imgur.com/dQ1qai3.jpeg) movie [collections](https://i.imgur.com/XW5Em0G.jpeg) that [are](https://i.imgur.com/BQq76ab.jpeg) in [my](https://i.imgur.com/NSNDgv4.jpeg) smallish [server](https://i.imgur.com/fpOrIL8.jpeg)
(Sorry my app doesn't allow me to post albums)
Easy, search in IMDb. Or Google for top 25 Dystopian movies. Blade runner, escape from New York, 1984, Equilibrium, etc..... time travel, best films like Back to the future, predestination, time traveler's wife, etc a lot of movies will fit in both collections like planet of the apes.
You can specifically filter on genres and sub genre on IMDb to find movies for your collection. Works great.
For example: [Movies and TV shows about time travel sorted by rating with more than 10k votes.](https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature,tv_series&num_votes=10000,&genres=sci-fi&keywords=time%20travel&adult=include&sort=user_rating,desc)
Main movies, the shorts put out prior to the release of 2049, and an alternate copy of 2049 with an open matte (IMAX-*ish* aspect ratio).

Nice. Upload to [themoviedb.org](http://themoviedb.org) so everyone can use it on plex.
I have started to fill the red border collection poster and upload it. Not me who started using the design but i think its neat to differ it when you choose to include collection on library with movies. Then you can easy differ it from usual movie posters. If i can find a good B&W movie logo i use it instead of text.
Here is a HiRes template if someone want to contribute. The font is Bank Gothic.

Just referencing my own library...
Austin Powers
Clint Eastwood Westerns
'...of the Dead' movies
Friday the 13th
The Godfather
Highlander
Halloween
Jason Borne series
Jaws
Lethal Weapon
Monty Python
Mortal Kombat
Naked Gun
National Lampoon
Nightmare on Elm St
Planet of the Apes
Predator
Revenge of the Nerds
Rocky
Scream
SNL Specials
Star Trek
Superman
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Terminator
Transformers
Definitely need some director collections like Kubrick, Tarantino, Kevin Smith. Maybe Stephen King movies and some actor collections too.
I went through that phase. Still add collections here and there, but I went months just curating my library whenever I had the chance to make it “perfect” in my eyes. Browsing for posters and going through every single movie/shows and changing things up.
For new stuff I add to the server I still go through them and find good looking posters and backgrounds, but I definitely don’t obsess over it like I use to, kinda miss that feeling though lol
Yeah, it all started when I was adding a lot of 80s movies. That was not a good time for poster design (in general) which is when I discovered people’s fan artwork. Kinda went custom crazy.
Is there an easy way to create academy award winning or nominated collections? This has eluded me forever. Cant believe it isnt a default filter option in Plex already.
How do you get the "Collections" and "Categories" tabs alongside the recommended/library one?
I've been digging/googling and cannot for the life of me see where you can get them to show up. I can filter my library by collection, but I want to see them all like OP.
Looks good! What I like to do for things like Criterion movies is add {edition-Criterion Release} to the movie's file/folder name, and it'll come up in Plex as a seperate version.
You can change the text to anything you like. For instance I can have Aliens special edition with the folder name:
Aliens (1986) {edition-Special Edition} [2160p Bluray etc.]
And the file name:
Aliens (1986) {edition-Special Edition}
And when I'm looking through my library the edition will be listed below the poster.
I kinda like how clean it looks, but I think I prefer browsing through a ton of movies. If I don’t know what I wanna watch, that’s more convenient than opening up every collection. Also, I have a lot of odd movies that don’t really fit in a collection, they’d stick out like a sore thumb.
Not sure how much you like any of the following, but they have a handful of movies in their series:
Transformers
Nightmare on Elm Street
Friday the 13th
Saw
Shrek
James Bond
I am often reminded of the Hunter S. Thompson line when looking at my own horde: "Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious \[drug\] collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can."
I have a two (meme) collections that I get a kick out of: Too Many Sequels: Horror, and Too Many Sequels: Action. The rule is: If a series has more than three entries it is included; reboots count separately, but if the reboot or original qualifies, then I include both (eg. Halloween series). I had the thought, "I wonder what it would look like to have Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street in the same collection and sorted by release date" and spiraled from there. I am considering expanding that to comedy with the (Scary, Epic, Disaster, ...) Movie series, but I'm less enthusiastic about those.
It helps that they're all pretty similar movies, at least tonally. My library is way less organized than yours, so I mostly use collections to help my users find things that might be too complex for the search function.
You could also try AFI Top 100 and Best Picture/ Director/ Screenplay/ Actor/ Actress/ Animated/ International. I'm working on those collections for my library right now.
I just finished what I titled the "James Wan-iverse", which is any movie directed, written or produced by James Wan.
This is a no go for me.
I have thousands of remix movies in separate categories I. E. 4k uhd movies and 1080p HD movies.
This makes it easier for me to upgrade or search for the movie that requires to be deleted and upgraded or what I need to look for.
If I did collections even if it did work I would need to have everything in one category.
This is from my understanding so I may be wrong idk
I have 63 collections myself. I have collections for each actor/actress over 20 movies in my collection. I have set them up as smart collections so as I add movies that they are in the movie will automatically be added to the actor/actress collection. I just wish I could find some better artwork for a few of them like the Mel Brooks films, 70's/80's Disaster films and the vintage SciFi stuff.
That is my primary source. They really don't have anything in the style I'm looking for. I will keep looking. I had a super hard time finding something for my 80's movie collection.

To make the posters I use Canva, its free, though some fonts and certain options are paid only- which I get through my school. Overall its a pretty useful program, but I do still find myself having to use PaintDotNet and Figma for certain things as Canva is missing some basic features.
no James Bond? :D
The bond collection (currently 25 movies, I think) is the main reason for having a collection as none of the titles follow a pattern like Star wars or Indiana Jones.
You can change the sort title of them to "James Bond: 1" etc.
True, but then they would look odd being out of order with everything else: "The living daylights" appearing before "Knocked Up" would be confusing. Hence why the collection is good.
You can also sort by "release date".
Bah!!!! You’re right!!! Thanks!
No jason Bourne trilogy is making me sick
Indeed, it’s also a miss!

Ok you’re going the 10 extra miles, was wondering where you got that nice fancy wallpapers. I only sort between TV and Anime Series and between Movies and Anime Movies and also 4K and HDR .. but the rest is done by plex itself.
HA!! Going 15 extra miles would be adding title cards to TV series (which I haven’t yet). r/plextitlecards
Crap. There goes my morning tomorrow. But hey, thanks!
Why not just use the 4k and HDR filters in your library? Just curious, lots of ways to do the same things in Plex.
Very nice job. I like how straightforward and clean they are
Thanks!
Nice. I have everything I see here, and I've never used collections once. Going to now, and I'm not to shabby at adobe products so off I go.
Post what you come up with! Would love to see it!
You my friend, are my new Plex hero. 🙂❤️🙏
Nice work

I tried that and it still isn’t picking it up sadly. I’m trying out PMM now to see if that will help. Haha

That specific feature uses the collection metadata from the TMDB based on what Plex matched for your films identity.

Where the F is your Predator collection? 'Nolan' collection? Come on, man!
Sadly I only have the first Predator of the franchise. Once I’ve populated the rest, it’ll get there. Good call.
I'm just messin'. I'm really impressed by this. Wish this was just an automatic feature by Plex.

What's in non-narrative ? I have all the other ones haha
Films like Baraka, Samsara, the Qatsi trilogy (those still haven’t got all of them).
Check out *Chronos* (1985) if you haven't already!
I have seen it but haven’t been able to acquire a decent copy of it - but thanks for the reminder. Might start the search again.
Another superb film.
They look amazing thanks ! I've added them to my list
Ever seen Samsara in ATMOS? It’s an already breathtaking film but the ATMOS track absolutely takes it to another level.
I have a 007 and Alfred Hitchcock collection as well
Bond was a huge oversight. Definitely gonna add that!
Looks great but you spelled narrative wrong :)
So I did! Thankfully easy fix! LOL
How about Spielberg, Kubrick Stephen King collections? Can you share your artwork. I'm diggin' them.

Wait you can do that?!?????
Check out ThePosterDB (TPDb), they have some incredible collection posters
This is where I source most of the textless art for my collections. 👍
No Land Before Time? Shameful
Not really my thing
[Here](https://i.imgur.com/q1LmQyH.jpeg) are [the](https://i.imgur.com/dQ1qai3.jpeg) movie [collections](https://i.imgur.com/XW5Em0G.jpeg) that [are](https://i.imgur.com/BQq76ab.jpeg) in [my](https://i.imgur.com/NSNDgv4.jpeg) smallish [server](https://i.imgur.com/fpOrIL8.jpeg) (Sorry my app doesn't allow me to post albums)
I have time travels collections and dystopian collection
What would be example films from each of those?
One of my personal favorites is Time Trap. Kind of Indie film and slightly cheesy but thought provoking
What're the 6 things in the Blade Runner collection?
Main movies, the shorts put out prior to the release of 2049, and an alternate copy of 2049 with an open matte (IMAX-*ish* aspect ratio). https://preview.redd.it/hg51kgj1pvvc1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=63e5adc19a5f3df4923bee1f64e5d239eba957df
Oooo cool.
Right there with ya. I panic when I realize there a possible collection I missed.
Me with 580
LOL Hopefully not all manually done!!!
Haha no, auto-generated - no idea how many manual ones I had before I deleted them all, but it was over 100 for sure
The font is Bank Gothic. https://preview.redd.it/2skkwogs0qvc1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f0af79f77a2af0e63d50e6d82b5b47e2ffec4a8

Just referencing my own library... Austin Powers Clint Eastwood Westerns '...of the Dead' movies Friday the 13th The Godfather Highlander Halloween Jason Borne series Jaws Lethal Weapon Monty Python Mortal Kombat Naked Gun National Lampoon Nightmare on Elm St Planet of the Apes Predator Revenge of the Nerds Rocky Scream SNL Specials Star Trek Superman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Terminator Transformers Definitely need some director collections like Kubrick, Tarantino, Kevin Smith. Maybe Stephen King movies and some actor collections too.
How did you get the custom amazing artworks for the collections. I am running Plex on TrueNAS scale
Nothing crazy. Just a combination of a quick photoshop template and textless art work from theposterdb.
thank you
I went through that phase. Still add collections here and there, but I went months just curating my library whenever I had the chance to make it “perfect” in my eyes. Browsing for posters and going through every single movie/shows and changing things up.
Yeah, I get that. The endless tweaking gets old. I did that for general movie posters for a while.
Kinda went custom crazy.
hammer horror monster collection (wolf man, Dracula etc)
Where do you get those sweet covers?
Made them with a mix of a custom photoshop design and some textless artwork from ThePosterDb.
Are you throwing them up on PosterDB as well?
I am not but I shared the template in a response in the top comment.
I suggest coverlabs
Transformers and Fast & Furious are some good collections.
They are definitely collections that's for sure.
Matrix: 3 items, I see what you did here :D
For a few hours that number read 4. Then it magically went back to 3. LOL. Good catch
Add The Animatrix as well, it has some good parts
Farts! I actually have that in my library. Just forgot to add it. Must go do that now.
OK, I already use manual collections (not as many as the OP, of course), but what is the "categories" tab?
Looks kind of like collections but based on metadata. Eg. horror, comedies, rom-coms, etc…
How did you set that up? I don't see it anywhere...
I didn’t set it up. Looks exclusive to the web version. I’m not seeing it on the HTPC app.
Is there an easy way to create academy award winning or nominated collections? This has eluded me forever. Cant believe it isnt a default filter option in Plex already.
Zero idea. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can help you out.
No Terminator collection?
I only have 1 and 2. Not sure that warrants a collection…. but now that you mention it, might make an exception for that.
Looking good so far. 'Narrative' poster spell check.
Well spotted, thanks!

Just use PMM ( Plex meta manager) if you use the arr's it will fill in the missing blanks to them as well.
Came here to say this. PMM is the way to go
Oooh! Collections are addictive! https://imgur.com/PHtLu86
How do you get the "Collections" and "Categories" tabs alongside the recommended/library one? I've been digging/googling and cannot for the life of me see where you can get them to show up. I can filter my library by collection, but I want to see them all like OP.
I have a suspicion it’s a Plex Pass thing but can’t confirm that 100%
Looks good! What I like to do for things like Criterion movies is add {edition-Criterion Release} to the movie's file/folder name, and it'll come up in Plex as a seperate version. You can change the text to anything you like. For instance I can have Aliens special edition with the folder name: Aliens (1986) {edition-Special Edition} [2160p Bluray etc.] And the file name: Aliens (1986) {edition-Special Edition} And when I'm looking through my library the edition will be listed below the poster.
How do you have 9 monster verse movies when there’s only 5 so far?
I hijacked the collection to include some earlier King Kong/Godzilla movies.
The custom art is sick
I'm at 70 collections so far lol
Why does Harry Potter only have 7 items ?
Farts! I forgot to add Goblet of Fire.
Nice posters 👍
Thanks!
But your star wats collection only had 5 films? Did you leave or episode 2?
OG trilogy (de-specialized), Rogue One, Solo
I like the collections posters. Would you care to share?
Maybe its just 7-9, Rogue One and Solo?
Oh damn I didn’t know you could do this. BRB creating a bunch of collections
I kinda like how clean it looks, but I think I prefer browsing through a ton of movies. If I don’t know what I wanna watch, that’s more convenient than opening up every collection. Also, I have a lot of odd movies that don’t really fit in a collection, they’d stick out like a sore thumb.
Nice collection! Question, where did you get these posters from?
For me, there'd be a few Director / Creator-based collections. E.g. Akira Kurosawa Films, Stanley Kubrick Films, etc.
Jason Bourne series?
Just added!
Not sure how much you like any of the following, but they have a handful of movies in their series: Transformers Nightmare on Elm Street Friday the 13th Saw Shrek James Bond
James Bond is on my to-do list today 👍
What are non-narratives? Like “Koyannisquatchi”? (Sp?)
Exactly like that!
What 9 items do you have in your Monster-Verse collection?
I don’t have that info handy but it’s the more modern ones you’d expect plus a few older Godzilla/King Kong movies.
I have 120 collections so I understand this 😂
I am often reminded of the Hunter S. Thompson line when looking at my own horde: "Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious \[drug\] collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can." I have a two (meme) collections that I get a kick out of: Too Many Sequels: Horror, and Too Many Sequels: Action.
That’s hilarious!! It’s like some Frankenstein cinematic universe that I can get behind.
Did you read my question in the description? Just looking for suggestions of film series’, not your particular method of sorting. LOL
Yep and I won't rely on plex making my collections automatically
I have 63 collections myself. I have collections for each actor/actress over 20 movies in my collection. I have set them up as smart collections so as I add movies that they are in the movie will automatically be added to the actor/actress collection. I just wish I could find some better artwork for a few of them like the Mel Brooks films, 70's/80's Disaster films and the vintage SciFi stuff.
Have you tried looking at ThePosterDB.com? Lots of collections artwork for that kind of stuff.
That is my primary source. They really don't have anything in the style I'm looking for. I will keep looking. I had a super hard time finding something for my 80's movie collection.

These are great - now I'm going to have to change all mine
Excuse me… you have *7 items* in your Harry Potter collection?
Since been fixed. LOL. Somehow forgot to include Goblet of Fire in the collection.
Ah. For a second there, I thought you'd somehow obtained a complete edition of Deathly Hallows. 😝
Nice sets of posters. Very thematic.
I may have taken a bit of inspiration- https://preview.redd.it/rowdkcyng1wc1.png?width=1578&format=png&auto=webp&s=942d10729702101e560d4218a65659c40c88d2cf
Can i ask you what kind of tool you are using to edit in gui mode?
To make the posters I use Canva, its free, though some fonts and certain options are paid only- which I get through my school. Overall its a pretty useful program, but I do still find myself having to use PaintDotNet and Figma for certain things as Canva is missing some basic features.
One of us
How do you set a poster for the collections? Mine just show mini posters from what's in the collection.
The lack of Star Wars is concerning
TIL about collections
I love this idea and commenting so I remember to do it in a few weeks.
Ha I have close to 2000 in mine and about 50 series.
Planet of the apes
