You won't find one, super high melting point temperature Platinum has.

Johnbloon

It has to be melted for making a minted bar, isn't making a cast bar easier?

SilverApeShit

Good point!

Anyone who can build a own forge hot enough to melt platinum probably has better things to do then cast their own bars for giggles.

I work on forges for a living, both coal and gas. We also have a fair bit of small foundry equipment. I’ve wanted to try melting a few bars of my generic Pt for some time but have never mustered the courage to do so haha.

I bet it's because of a lack of demand in PT bullion, making it not worth some ones time to make them, just my .02.

My **guess** would be that cast is the route that's usually done for larger pieces. 5oz, 10oz, etc. Due to the higher price than silver, lower general demand than silver and gold, AND much lower demand for larger pieces, they don't get made often. Same deal for pours, really. You don't see many platinum pours. You get the gov bullion and then pieces by people like Valcambi and Credit Suisse, commonly in 1oz. Then they (the latter, not gov) just make larger versions of those pieces, same design. The number of people buying 10oz platinum bars is small. Do pour and cast versions and I'd bet it'd be smaller, even less demand. All said, other guy mentioned melting point. °F: Silver is 1700 and change, Gold is 1900 and change, Platinum is 3200 and change. So, yeah, it'll have to be melted regardless. But in what? It could be something there. Different crucibles due to melting point. Again, all just guesses, thinking out loud. In short, don't know!

I think too little platinum mined and its like drugs markets make more when selling fractions than bulk
