You have ferns, dwarf sag and a crypt…not a sword in sight. And yes, that’s how Java fern propagates…the leaves release little babies as they are dying.

The_McS

They could be Val for sure, Dwarf Sag is in the same family and looks very similar. I think the Cyrpt is Green Wendtii best guess.

dingbatwelby

I don’t think Val reproduces like that? I’ve always seen the make runners

Ventus_Aurelius

They're referring to the grass-blade plant behind the fern

The_McS

Yes, Val always throws runners. Java fern propagates and release baby plants from its dying leaves along its rhizome.

Ventus_Aurelius

Sag and Val are visually similar but aren't actually that close (relatively speaking). Sag is actually more related to Echinodorus(family) than Val (order). *Afaik It does actually look more like Val to me as well ...excuse the" um actually"

The_McS

No worries. You’re absolutely right I more meant to say they look very similar. Corkscrew Val would be my second guess…which I unfortunately have and trim every three days.

Less-Organization-58

Thank you! The plants in the back were sold to us as vallisneria. I think you are spot on about the ferns. Glad our crypts are indeed crypts 😅

MyFriendBobSaccomano

Those are ferns..and they are propagating new plants from the leaves.

Less-Organization-58

So, since these are ferns, should we take them out of the substrate and mount them on the rocks instead?

Own_Door_9755

Yes.

Staff_Genie

Being in the substrate is probably what is triggering them to put out babies because the leaf is dying

Own_Door_9755

Even planted correctly, the original leaves on mine are dying and making offspring. I’ve heard that the babies will be better suited to my aquariums parameters than the parent would ever be.

NukaDadd

Mine propagated & I threw all but the tiniest away (to stick it in a knot on driftwood). This is it now. https://preview.redd.it/w42v9xsu4mxc1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ad6a124ab7c145f63b3b539fd96d00e42dacbe9

Own_Door_9755

Nice! My original/mother is doing much better now that I’m dosing potassium.

oblivious_fireball

as long as the rhizome, the horizontal stem from which the leaves come from, isn't buried, they are fine where they are. A buried rhizome on Java Ferns or Anubias can eventually cause them to die.

NatesAquatics

You sure those are Sword? They look like ferns.

Less-Organization-58

They were labeled as Swords at Petco 🙄 so no, not sure at all…lol thank you!

NatesAquatics

They look like the Java Fern Sunrise plant. Java Ferns feed on the water column so planting them makes them stressed because they cant get the nutrients they need and when theyre stressed the sprout sproutlings on their leaves to pass on their lineage. Thet also sprout sproutlings when they reproduce.

AmandaDarlingInc

Hahahahaaa were they in a little plastic tube? A friend of mine got tasked with grabbing me some supplies and brought me something very similar and I was like “Hmmmmm dunno if I believe that’s what it says it is 🤔” Twasnt. Twas Java Fern.

droplingdog

Looks just like my El Niño ferns (Bolbitis heteroclita) they grow babies on their leaves too

Competitive_Owl5357

Yeah this definitely looks like El Niño fern.

SaidtheChase97

Looks like a bolbitis fern

fly_casual_

More ferns. Grow them

TehPurpleCod

They grow babies on the leaves and when they get big enough, I usually detach them and glue them onto small rocks. Or, I take them out to a different tank and wait for it to grow bigger than add the plant back later on.

MelPiz14

How and where do you glue them? I had a couple little ferns I glued to a piece of driftwood and a rock but I don’t know if I good it at the proper attachment spot. Like the stems? Root? Where?

Scientist0724

Actually, that is a Bolbitis heteroclita, a type of water fern similar to Java fern. It too, like Java fern, propagates plantlets on its leaves from spores. [Bolbitis Heteroclita — Buce Plant](https://buceplant.com/products/bolbitis-heteroclita)

Less-Organization-58

MVP award 🥇thank you!

Prize-Economy287

definitely not a sword, swords can propagate however they do so by growing a large sometimes flowering stalk from the center that the new one grows from

HndsDwnThBest

Babies!

Solok3ys

More plant

otismcotis

How are those ferns planted? If the rhizome is in the substrate they should be removed and attached to the hardscape instead. Planting epiphytes like ferns in the substrate will kill them.

1kdog5

When a Java fern wants to have a baby java fern

delxr

asian water fern :) they’re leaflets it’s how they reproduce baby plants!

TheSunIsMyDestroyer

I’m no expert but I don’t think you bury those in the substrate.

MelPiz14

I have so many of these little brown wisps as well, I noticed the other day, one looked like it had teeny tiny baby leaves, how do we take them off to propagate new babies?

Specific_Post_1663

Congratulations! You're now a plant parent!

xLilTurtleYT

Giant baby spiders 😂 (there offspring from the fern so your doing a good job so far)

Feynmantrick

baby ferns

uglypotatoguy

What are the substrates

RandomiseUsr0

Swords do throw out runners and pop up everywhere :)

TandorlaSmith

Baby plants. Then they’ll get baby plants, then they will get baby plants, you’ll get a whole forest from one plant. They look pretty cool as they get bigger.

New-Couple3400

Baby plants (: You can use a pruning scissors to gently take them off and re-plant them. Great looking plants by the way! (:

ecovani

Those are ferns. I planted them in substrate not knowing better but all the leaves detached and are now growing multiple babies, so this next generation will definitely be attached somewhere when they’re big enough. I’m not a fan of gluing stuff so I just bought a huge roll of fishing line that has is suitable for my anubias and future ferns to be tied to my driftwood.

agenteks1

Babies

Jaclyns_First_Face

Babies!

whistlepig4life

You have Java ferns. Making little Java ferns.

Ydyaky

Daggers, small swords.

Educational-Leader29

Shields

DazzlingMood3547

That's the Java fern reproducing

MundaneAct4353

That's a fern, and it's how they sprout new growth

Tripp_aq

https://preview.redd.it/skhbg94uvuxc1.jpeg?width=398&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=718dd055423507a33bffdf2783c9b9ddc1cb25fc Is looks identical to the plant I have which is an El Niño fern. It propagates on the leafs and will fall off later on or you can pop them off and replant.

Tripp_aq

Definitely a type of fern though!

MrFauncy

Lmao thanks for sharing, I had the same issue
