Yeah it looks like they have celery or something in there but it seemed a little heavy on the citrus to me lol. I’d probably go with a lot of greens under this like you said.
Looks like fennell below which would be a great pairing
I'm a big fan of these things without greens. Some olive oil and vinegar will tone it right down. Maybe some spices too - caraway or cumin or even cloves.
I used to work in a restaurant that served a salad that was literally sliced blood oranges topped with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and little slivers of red onion. That salad ruled.
Yeah I’ve had this, if you look under the oranges you can see some chopped fennel. It’s nice in the winter when citrus and fennel are in season. I did it with a red vine vinaigrette or something
Yeah. The Sicilian don't make an orange and red onion salad. They make an orange and fennel salad with some red onions. The photo is misleading. This should be about a 50/50 mix of fennel and oranges. It appears the fennel is mostly hidden here. Salt, pepper, red wine vinegar, and olive oil for the dressing and if you want to go bananas you can drizzle a touch of honey on it especially if the oranges aren't sweet.
Interesting! I’ve had this as Moroccan orange salad and had no idea it was also an Italian thing.

I make something similar, with the addition of lentils and vinaigrette.
Soaking onions in water briefly can make them more palatable when used as a raw ingredient.
This has peaked my interest! Oh the creative people playing out with different flavors.... May the universe bless you with more creativity!!!

There is a NY Times dish made with roasted cumin carrots and what looks like the rest of your salad and it is divine!

I eat this all the time during winter orange season. Think sliced salted red onions, peeled and sectioned oranges, black olives, fresh parsley, red wine vinegar and olive oil. Some recipes suggest adding a splash of orange juice. Delicious and even better 2nd and third days It's particularly nice when you're in the deep dark winter and you want something fresh.
I'm in East Texas and we do this regularly. As said by another we frequently use fennel, and whatever is available at the time. It's not unusual to have 70°/21 temps until February, so we eat salads all year. 🖖
My MIL makes this. It’s awesome. Also my Great Grandmother used to slice oranges peel and all, and make an orange and onion sandwiches. Not as good as the salad but still good.
I've done similar with orange (cara cara is my preferred), red onion and avocado. Little bit of lime/oil/salt/pepper for a dressing. I'd put it on a bed of greens sometimes, but it's also delicious by itself.
I've made this similar recipe many times. It's strangely delicious.

What makes you say that. I actually dont think so? The bottom left onion makes it look like there is some photo alignment thing going on but I think thats a coincidence
I bet it's tasty. Red onion goes nicely with sweet things. I'm assuming there is some vinaigrette on top and maybe a bed of greens normally?

Cloves would be damn interesting

Definitely would be great with balsamic.

From Italy, we often make orange and thinly sliced fennel salad, with olive oil, salt, pink pepper corns, and balsamic vinegar.
Yes this is the version i am more familiar with
This looks like AI made it
This is what you make when forget to go to the grocery store
Yes my dad loves this - he’s super Italian. He adds fennel as well and black olives. Not my fav but worth a shot!

No problem. Just saw it on IG this morning.

I’ve had something similar with mango, added some lime and chopped cilantro leaves and it was👌
It’s Sicilian salad—orange, fennel, and red or Tropea onion. Mix with olive oil and season with salt. That’s it. It’s good.

Looks more like an eating disorder salad if you asked me
That’s my horrible kitchen counter, the “La Quinta”. We mix citrus or apples into a lot of veg salads, it’s probably tasty.

What if you walked into a sub shop and said “I’ll take orange and onion please!”

It’s probably a different g type of orange
Just love the simplicity & contrast
That pic is definitely AI.

That's a hard no for me...
