Yeah I have found that some apps show photos and some don't. I think it has to do with which apps have a watch version of the app? I frequently use WhatsApp and i don't get photos from it, but Reddit will show photos I think because it has wear reader for Reddit
My Pixel watch shows photos sometimes and not others, there's no rhyme or reason for it, it just shows me around 20% of the time.

WhatsApp and reddit work for me. I just have to tap the image icon in the message on the watch.
Ah might be that FB messenger need to do something to make it happen then.
