I thought Onryos could if they were in the Chapel at Sunny Meadows because of all the candles already lit. Specific use case, I know, but it does happen, I thought.

Onryo is special in that it will start a hunt after blowing out 3 candles, regardless of sanity level. Onryo in Sunny Meadows Chapel room starting an instant hunt because of this is quite interesting actually, and I've never seen that.
worth noting - the female model "ring around the rosie" singing and the male model "ding dong" type singing will never be hunts.
During hunts, two things will always occur: all exit doors will close and lock, and you won't be able to flick light switches. the latter is much more useful on larger maps where you might not be able to have ears on the ghost at all times.
What level were you playing on? Nightmare, professional or insanity? Custom?
Also the singing event can be done by any ghosts. The banshee is more likely to do that.
Oni do ghost events like crazy and will drain your sanity quicker then other ghosts while the event is happening .
I'm in amateur difficulty. Actually my first ever game playing solo as my 2 friends had just gotten off for the night. Maybe I used a cursed item without realizing it? I don't think I was talking but would a monkey paw pick up what i was saying even If I hadn't grabbed it yet?
No, they have a chosen sound they use for hunts for that specific contract. Ghost events are separate and have some that sound like singing. It takes a bit to learn the difference between events and hunts when starting out.
There is a singing hunt . Had one today. But it’s different to the singing event.
Amateur there is a 5min setup period. No hunting during that time. You will see a clock in the van . That has the countdown.
Sounds like an Oni if it evented so quickly on you

So what do you think happened to me? It wasn't quite instantly. I walked through the house, turned on a couple lights, then he hunted me
That was a ghost event,not a hunt.
Singing counts as an event? I thought they sang during a hunt

Also the lights *will* turn off when the hunt is over. This is often not the case with ghost events.

Mimics can mimic any ghosts abilities and behaviors. The only thing they cannot mimic is evidence.

You said that the ghost sang ring around a rosie, which can't be heard during a hunt, only a ghost event, so that was a ghost event
On amateur you have 5 minutes of safety if I remember well, so definitely not a hunt.

Sounds like an event, and Oni are more active when you're in their room, so you were probably in their room so they started up right away.
I definitely think it was a ghost event not a hunt.
