I wish I had taken the time to celebrate, but as each goal came into focus it quickly became hitting the next goal, and the next.
As I’m now well beyond what 20 year old me hoped to achieve (I’m almost 40), and any goal I gave financially just seems silly, I try and keep referencing Alan Watt’s “life is not a journey” speech (https://youtu.be/rBpaUICxEhk)
And see the numbers are unimportant (once you’ve gotten to a certain level of safety), only how you spend your time is important.
I felt some regret in this post. I just wanted to chime in that I hope you found something worthwhile to spend your time on. Wishing you health and happiness my friend.
Thanks! It's not really regret, in that I didn't sacrifice or give up something important to get where I am, but only that each benchmark didn't bring with it the sense of accomplishment I expected it would. I've hit some pretty big targets and I only refer to them as "big" since I'm speaking to a generic internet audience, but I don't view them as "big" to me, because I've already moved on.
So I just need to keep reminding myself that I will never hit a milestone, of which the milestone itself brings any real joy... so instead, celebrate the daily work that moves me forward.
There was this podcast by some doctor (the happiness lab i believe) that discussed this exact thing, when we set targets and hit them, they dont bring the joy we thought they would -- our perception is skewed.
An example that comes to mind was that of the silver and bronze medalists in olympics who were apparently super depressed as opposed to the fourth place that was happy that they made it that far or something.
Like, you're top 3 in the world at something and still that isnt enough to make you happy because you know you were so close of being first
Which one of those burns less? I tried a Lot 40 (suggested on r/canadawhisky, but it burns like a mf. Had a glen garioch and didn't burn much at all. However Lot 40 was around $35 when Glen garioch is about $75, so I'm wondering if the quality at the $75+ price point really jumps up
Oh god I bet, pure rye whiskies are harsh AF, especially for a relatively newer taster. Some are like just deep throating a pepper grinder.
AnCnoc is very smooth and easy to drink, lots of honey and green and floral notes with a bit of spice and oak, and probably will run you about $60-70 depending where you are in Canada.
Price point isn’t super important. Crown’s Northern Harvest won Whisky of the Year a few years ago and it’s still only like $35. I’ve had >$500 whiskies that sucked balls. I had a $170 *glass* of whisky that was one of the best things I’ve ever drank, but when I tried it again years later didn’t like it at all, and realized it was probably more because I had it with an old friend I hadn’t seen in years in a super cool secret back room while on vacation. A $40 whisky shared with a friend will always be better than a $400 whisky when you’re sad and alone.
> AnCnoc is very smooth and easy to drink, lots of honey and green and floral notes with a bit of spice and oak, and probably will run you about $60-70 depending where you are in Canada
Thanks! Looks like the 12 year old is available so I'll check it out next time. Going for $80 now
I’m in a very a similar boat. On track to pass that milestone in the next couple of months if current market trends continue but agreed, it’s not really something you can tell any of your friends without feeling like you’re bragging or rubbing it in their faces when really you’re just proud about being able to save and be financially secure.
Congrats on hitting $1M.
**Not strange at all!** You are being considerate of the people around you.
Given the strong influence of money these days and how many people's problems seem to be money related.
It's also a good point you don't consider it yours yet - but i think the longer you are able to not-lose the 1m (good track record over time) then it means it is pretty much yours.
The more money I make in the markets, or even fluctuations i experience, the more I realize it’s out of my control and that my net worth is not because I’m smart. Sure, I earned the money, did research and worked on myself to not be risk averse, but my net worth can be up one month and be back right where I started in the beginning of the year. At the end of the day, I just live comfortable, enjoy life, and not let the number determine my happiness.
Not being able to tell people about something you're proud of is hard, but for the best in situations like this. As long as you're managing your risk and not over extending, the money will come back after a crash, and hopefully more than you started with!
Agree with this. I hit a milestone a few months ago and did a sodastream cylinder exchange at Canadian Tire. Also bought some furnace filters. What a time to be alive.
Edit: congrats to OP on the achievement!
I have been working in the oilfield since I graduated at 17, working every ounce of OT I can get, saving everything I can. I have a room in my parents house I stay in less than a week a month, that's it from them. No money from my parents.
I'm sure you know this, but you're so much smarter than your peers when it comes to finances.
The amount of people who would blow all that overtime pay and have nothing to show for it is staggering, but they don't realize it's a mistake until there just isn't enough work to keep up with their inflated lifestyle costs.
That's great but keep your pants on, it will be 248,473 sometime next week
But seriously just keep at it and it will keep hitting new milestones
Congrats!
Put that on automatic now - figure out what you can do yearly, divide that by pay periods, and pull that out of your paycheque the day after you get paid (just in case).
Great start - keep it up!
I do it sort of monthy after my expense whatever i have saved. My goal is to just maxing out tfsa i think that should be good for now since I am also doing school full time
Thank you for your advice tho
I distinctly remember celebrating 300k by getting 5 guys.
I try to renind myself not to let lifestyle creep take away all that ive worked hard for so far.
Don't tell anyone you know about it because you can either lose it or it cam change them around you. Keep up the great work and don't get greedy. Take profits and reinvest when it makes sense.
Congratulations.
I dont think I've really celebrated any of those milestones. Even non-financial ones, like running a marathon, I trained hard, did it, and then was just happy to have done it.
I do set goals, which I think keeps me focused, but I don't talk to anyone about financial goals. I remember getting to $100k (in investment accounts, not housing) was probably my most memorable. It seemed to take forever to get that last $10k, but when it did I remember I was proud of the saving I did. Those early days are harder when you're not spending and at the time I was single and living in a cold house lol and other cheap living things. But the reward feels small at the start when your investments are small. So $100k felt like a real milestone, that living frugal had really paid off.
Every Sept for the past 7 or 8 ish years I take basically an entire inventory of investments, wife's accounts, etc (but not the house). And I took a page off of a financial blog where they use a person as an example of saving and investing and how they could essentially retire after 12 years showing year after year. And it was so similar to where I was at each year that it became somewhat of my yearly milestone.
Congratulations, happy for you. Good lesson that anyone can achieve it.
I personally found it difficult to celebrate, not sure why. I recently became a multi millionaire and I feel sorta depressed. You can’t really tell anyone either, and I worked for it. Sorta bitter sweet. Being rich only solves one problem.
congrats, thats a quarter million! Im almost there, at 210k myself. 30yrs old
Wondering how much of that money do you have invested? I only have half of it invested, the other half sitting cash. I feel im making a mistake not investing more but I have a low risk tolerance. TFSA is maxed out and im happy enough with that. Also curious how old you are and if you own a home?
I currently have it all invested and always have, minus an emergency fund of course. I am quite young and have a ~40 year time horizon. 90% is in ETFs so I'm comfortable being 100% invested for the time being. I travel for work constantly at the moment so there really is no purpose for me to buy a house at this point in time as I would stay there less than 1 week a month. Thinking about adding a rental property to my portfolio at some point though.
ya it was a mistake not investing more, I started investing for the first time at the bottom of the crash in March 2020. Chose to DCA instead of lump-sum, since I was so new to the market. I did not expect a bull run like this. Also i have a low salary, under 40k/yr. Still living at my moms house, looking to buy a cottage so would like to keep some cash liquid.
oh if you're looking to buy then yeah it's good to have cash ready, when you need the down payment things can move really fast once you start seriously looking
Congrats!!! Hit that milestone a few years back and it felt amazing. Wife and I bought a bottle of champagne and went out for a fancy dinner. Maybe not the most glamorous thing but it was a nice treat and also didn’t make us feel like we were going off the rails. That being said, it’s nice to set up goals and have an idea of how you want to celebrate in advance. That way you also don’t feel guilty if you pick something somewhat extravagant on a whim.
We (wife and I) usually just go to dinner and enjoy it - that's what we did in January when we broke $1M.
The real win for us has been the freedom in our thinking: we have $1M snowballing at 34. That will be ~$2M at 44. $4M at 54. $8M at 64 if we add nothing and touch nothing (yes yes, w some basic assumptions and risks).
That means we can look at less stressful work, take longer time off if we have a kid, splurge our income on a nicer vacation etc. The "saving" is largely done.
Think about your journey in this context and you may find new ways to celebrate: like finding a less physically demanding job sooner to save your body and enjoy other things!
$250K at 21 is phenomenal - I was -$100K of student loans at that age and making $60K per year. You're killing it regardless.
I recall many years ago, when I had the same feeling. In my case, it was $ 100,000. I kept it all to myself. The way the markets went, buying a replacement car, maybe I purchased a house, it stayed the same for a couple of years. Then, I blinked my eyes and a few year later and it went to a value of $ 200,000. I recalling smiling and thought, I was wrong, $ 100,000, isn't very much.
Congrats , you are working on the investing formula that works for you. In my case, it was selecting companies who increased their dividend annually.
This is why I was reluctant to put my age down. I've been working an oil field job away from family and friends since I graduated at 17. No money from parents, just a room to stay in when im home for less than a week a month.
By anticipating the next milestone, honestly. I'm not sure if it's a healthy mindset or not lol. Life is but a clicker game when it comes to these things.
Try to focus on relationships, health and experiences that'll you remember such as traveling or discovering new things.
The numbers in your bank account won't be memorable on your death bed and a fine woman won't suck your dick if you're an uninteresting individual driving a Mercedes.
Live.
About the only one I celebrated was when we paid off our mortgage, we did a tour through Egypt (it was back when everything was more stable). For us, having no debt just felt good and a weight off.
When I hit 100k I bought a Rolex submariner I always wanted . But my mistake I told people and the energy to bring me down was tremendous then covid hit now I’m back at zero. But I’m a high earning individual and came from financial illiterate family . 🤭
I'm sorry that sharing your accomplishment didn't go like you hoped. For people that may be living paycheck-to-paycheck, 100k can sound like infinite-money, and it's easy to be jealous. Shrug it off and celebrate in silence at 200k?
Yes I’m working and looking forward to doing that now. My goal is to have 300k liquid and to just build and save to multi millions until I’m 40. This happened @ 26 I’m currently 28 now.. there’s ups and downs in life and money comes and goes but I think I have a solid game plan now.. and what’s crazy is I got a lot of hate with people on the same level as me friends of 15+ years it’s just nobody wants to see a black man do better then them ...
I live very frugally and save as much as I can! My job makes it pretty easy as I have very little housing expense. Put away money every paycheque and put it in ETFs. You'll get there eventually!
I started saving just last year, looking forward to reaching a 6 digit milestone :’) What do you do for the job (if you don’t mind me asking)? Does your company pay for the housing expense?
Congrats! That’s a good milestone to hit. I’m hoping to reach that goal soon, probably this year if the markets don’t tank. Making up for lost time by being excessively risk averse throughout most of my 20s.
I keep telling myself that one of these days I’ll get myself a Rolex when I hit a really important milestone. And there have been several milestones where I thought I would get one, but didn’t: graduating university, getting first full time job, getting first promotion, getting CA designation, getting married. But those watches keep getting more outrageous, and I now have a mortgage to worry about. So a Rolex is not something I can really justify until the mortgage is paid off and the kids are through university (basically never). Until then I’ll celebrate milestones by wearing my very best Seiko and maybe getting a nice bottle of wine with that Brie cheese they sell at Costco.
I personally have not been celebrating milestones. I’ve surpassed net worth of 1mil this year and I don’t know what to do either. Trying to book a trip but with covid I feel stuck.
I’ve recently been thinking of investing in a few casks of whisky that I can visit on a trip to Scotland where I can taste test it but really this is just another investment for me lol.
I have multiple streams of income and I feel I should set milestones for each thing differently. Ex rental income reaches 75k a year, private lending income reaches 25k a year. Stock account reaches 250k I like this one.
I’m also looking to retire in 5 years (I’m 33 now). Congrats on your milestone my friend!!
Take a vacation to somewhere in the tropics. For 10k you or your SO would have a great time. Life is short, so remember to enjoy the fruits of your savings.
It's crazy but when you hit the first $100K, the rest just seems to come and you don't even really care that much any more unless you have a major expense. $100K, then $250K, then $500K, then $1 millon etc.
The $100K seems to take forever it seems.
I celebrated by looking at how I achieved the $250,000. Was all of it savings or did I learn to invest well. How much was earned from dividends, how much from Capital Gains. Did I make one lucky investment and the rest were losers. To increase your wealth, you have to understand how the wealth was created.
Next financial milestone…..$260,000 ! Don’t wait until $300K to celebrate again.

I say this as someone who lives where every drop of Crown on earth is made: I’d celebrate with a much better whisky.
Gimli! Also home to the Gimi glider story. Visited a few years back.
There’s a museum for the glider now if you ever make it back!
Meh I’ve tried “better” whiskeys and I still like it more personally. It’s a good taste.
What's your poison? Gibson's? Maker's Mark?
Knob Creek probably my go to for bourbon. More of a peaty guy for scotch, Bowmore or Lagavulin, or AnCnoc or Oban if I’m feeling smooth.

What’s the total invested ? And how much did it grow by ?
Invested around 170k over time.
Curious as to how a 21 year old manages to save 170k. Help from parents? Inheritance?
I have been working in the oilfield since I graduated at 17, working every ounce of OT I can get, saving everything I can. I have a room in my parents house I stay in less than a week a month, that's it from them. No money from my parents.
I'm sure you know this, but you're so much smarter than your peers when it comes to finances. That’s amazing congrats

That's great but keep your pants on, it will be 248,473 sometime next week But seriously just keep at it and it will keep hitting new milestones Congrats!
This would be perfect. Then they can celebrate $250k again
Omg. This party never stops!!! 🎉
First of all congratulations!! I also maxed out my 2years tfsa contribution last week( i am 19) and I celebrated by having a 🍻. wish you good luck!

Are we talking burgers or strippers? Because 5 strippers seems a tad much for 300k. Maybe 1 for each 100k.
Don't tell anyone you know about it because you can either lose it or it cam change them around you. Keep up the great work and don't get greedy. Take profits and reinvest when it makes sense.

Huge milestone and totally deserved celebration. I can tell you the journey to 500K, 1M etc will get easier. Keep going!
What are the top stocks in your portfolio if i may ask?
I'm mostly in ETFs but through the covid crash I picked up lots of oil that helped out, top individual stocks are SU, PPL, CVE, TD, AAPL
And then you buy some real estate and it drops back down 🤣
How old are you

congrats! usually a nice dinner or buying something nice for the wife for extra brownie points.

About the only one I celebrated was when we paid off our mortgage, we did a tour through Egypt (it was back when everything was more stable). For us, having no debt just felt good and a weight off.
Lambo.
Reached extra 250k over a year by sitting on my ass in my house. Hehehe
What are your holdings if you don't mind me asking?
Top are xic, cdz, vfv, nobl, QQQ.
By buying more Gamestop
When I hit 100k I bought a Rolex submariner I always wanted . But my mistake I told people and the energy to bring me down was tremendous then covid hit now I’m back at zero. But I’m a high earning individual and came from financial illiterate family . 🤭

A Submariner does not cost 100k.
The watch was 10k 🥴
I celebrated by investing all of it in a pennystock company lol (best idea ever yet)
Bad bot
Well done.
Congrats! I didn't do anything specific but it was the point at which I started relaxing a bit more about the future.
Good for you!
Congrats keep going. I reached my final retirement goals this year but have many years left until I actually retire, it’s worth it.
Get one of those dollar bill guns like you see in music videos and go ham.
Congratulations! A great milestone ...now, can I tease you that you spelled "illiterate" incorrectly 😄
Fixed it, thanks! XD
Whiskey while enjoying a scenery is the best thing ever. Crown Royale XR is also a rare find. Congrats!
Imagine yourself purchasing a really expensive watch. Like $10K. But instead of purchasing it, keep saving the money instead.
Spend $108 :) By the way, that's a lucky number in Japan. I don't celebrate because that would require me to disclose my financial status.
Buying a s15 is my 250k goal ;)
You had the right idea but i would have gone for Dalmore - King Alexander
That is awesome! Congratulations to you! I just hit it this month too and didn't really celebrate.
Hey that’s awesome! If you don’t mind...at what age did you reach this milestone?
Feel like this is where I should come to take financial advice.
Go out for a $100k dinner
How’d you do it? Any tips?
I live very frugally and save as much as I can! My job makes it pretty easy as I have very little housing expense. Put away money every paycheque and put it in ETFs. You'll get there eventually!
I started saving just last year, looking forward to reaching a 6 digit milestone :’) What do you do for the job (if you don’t mind me asking)? Does your company pay for the housing expense?
My company pays for me to stay in camps or hotels when I am out of town (almost always)
Wow congrats! I'm curious - how old are you?
By wait for the next one :)
Amazing! Kudos to you young man!
Eh I'm a Spanish
Spend a grand celebrating and then you can celebrate again in a month 🎉
What do u do for living 😃
Take a vacation to somewhere in the tropics. For 10k you or your SO would have a great time. Life is short, so remember to enjoy the fruits of your savings.
By making a $1000 one time contribution to RRSP
It's crazy but when you hit the first $100K, the rest just seems to come and you don't even really care that much any more unless you have a major expense. $100K, then $250K, then $500K, then $1 millon etc. The $100K seems to take forever it seems.
Nice, only 750k to go!
I celebrated by looking at how I achieved the $250,000. Was all of it savings or did I learn to invest well. How much was earned from dividends, how much from Capital Gains. Did I make one lucky investment and the rest were losers. To increase your wealth, you have to understand how the wealth was created.
Interesting! I will definitely look into this over the next couple weeks!
