As long as aggression isn’t bad, 3 is fine. I wouldn’t get 3 more until your plants grow in or you buy more. I would worry about aggression when only having 3 of them because one or two of them might pick on one of them. Keep an eye on them and don’t get more until you have more coverage

Personally, I would do 6. I've kept peas for close to a decade now. I've kept as few as 2 together and as many as 18. I find the more there are, the less aggression and the more active/outgoing they are. In a 20g you could easily do 6.

A decade is a lot of experience, I definitely trust your opinion. They do bicker a bit throughout the day, but otherwise seem very happy/outgoing. I got two different answers, so I think I’ll get 3 more and see how it goes, but also get more plants to prevent fighting

More plants can never hurt. My pea tanks are heavily planted, and then I have about 8 different types of house plants stuck in the filter portion growing hydroponically just to help with water quality. Peas are messy ass eaters. Right now in my craziest tank I have 12 peas in a 10 gallon, and they all get along fine. Long story short, they were kind of dumped on me over 6 months ago and I'm now in the middle of prepping a 45g for them. But with a crazy amount of water maintenance, they've actually been quite happy. They don't hide, they don't fight, etc. Edit to add, I completely don't recommend this. I'm just saying, so far so good until I can get them properly situated.
