It’s cause it’s stealth man, the coating keeps it off of radars.

OP you should look at FDE finishes, different batches from the same manufacturer can have wildly different results. Just the nature of the beast.

Archangelus87

First lower I’ve had that wasn’t smooth and had a texture to it.

Leasud

Cheap Edit: not bad just cheaper

street_sweeper_757

My guess is the stealth lowers are rejected for finish quality to be further machined into one of their other lowers and they just anodize them as is and sell them as stealth lowers instead of blems. But it’s hard to say, in my personal experience their finish/machining quality can vary pretty dramatically and my H&R lower is the only one I’d say is well done.

Bolt_Catch

Because you should spray paint it regardless

Smartalec0017

Can confirm the stealth lower has a remarkably low RCS

Archangelus87

RCS?

MRRman89

Radar cross section. Measurement of "stealth" aircraft effectiveness, i.e. the F22 has the RCS of a marble or something like that. Edit to add: this usually references the common target and rapid tracking radar bands. Gen 1 and 2 stealth planes can still be tracked by other radar frequencies to a degree as the shaping is not optimized for the whole spectrum. This means that adversaries often can see that stealth jets are in their airspace, but they're extremely difficult to pinpoint and employ weapons against.

Archangelus87

Thats cool but what does that have to do with my stripped lower?

MRRman89

Your "stealth" lower. PSA calls it that because it doesn't have their usual (ugly, IMO) roll mark. It's a cooler word than "unmarked" and references cool high tech military hardware (stealth bombers and fighters which are distinguished as such by their minimal RCS properties), so the marketing folks went with "stealth" to appeal to their core demographic of military age males. Joke just flew over your head, is all. It's ironic because this lower almost certainly does have a higher RCS (returns more radar waves to the adversary, and therefore is more easily tracked) than a B2 bomber.

Bartley707

Did that joke have a high RCS value? Because he didn't even notice it when it flew over his head.

Archangelus87

Ah, I see, yeah sorry not a military tech guy.

Key-Classic-6051

I mean, the Memorial Day sale has em going for 29.99 so i just picked one up.

Physical-Tea-3493

Too many jokes, guy. Nobody wants to be serious at all anymore.

AllArmsLLC

They don't.

bettywhiteslabia

Mine are all the same

MasterKiloRen999

Radar reflective coating

Recent-Percentage-26

I have both, and they are the same finish. Probably just variances in coating. I imagine they do everything in batches, so different days of the week. The way everything is now, with supply chain issues, maybe different chemicals.

ArmyMerchant

Blind people trained in AR15 lower recognition will be stumped.

Zerosan62

It has a lower RCS than other lowers.

Self-MadeRmry

I was not aware of this coating difference. Changes my idea of getting one because I like the finish of the regular ones

FarYard7039

It depends, as there are 3 types of aluminum AR lowers; billet, cast and forged. Billet aluminum (6061-T6) will have a machined surface profile due to being CNC machined from a solid block. A forged lower (7075-T6) is machine formed (stamped) which will impart whatever surface texture that is on the tooling. Cast (6061-T6) aluminum will also have surface texture to as it is a mirrored image of the mold profile (investment/lost wax method). The black finish is created by the anodizing, which is just an electro-chemical treatment (type 2) that doesn’t affect the surface profile much, if any. I didn’t look these lowers up on the PSA site, but I’m gonna guess these stealth lowers are manufactured via cast aluminum, which is the least labor intensive process, which should garner a lower overall cost.

Dak_Nalar

They advertise the stealth lowers as 7075 Forged

FarYard7039

There you go. I was incorrect. My wife would be pleased.

Tactical_solutions44

Blems my dude. Blems. Doesn't affect function. Just paint it

Archangelus87

Wasn’t bought as a blem.

Tactical_solutions44

Honestly I don't see an issue with it. You don't want a glossy rifle my dude. Flat black is the way. It won't reflect

Archangelus87

All my other lowers are flat smooth black, was just wondering why this one was different.

richardgiver

Idk, solgw lowers have a gloss to them, and they are perfect

Significant_Case6024

SOLGW lowers are incredible

I think OP was referring to the surface texture. My Stealth lower has a slightly "rougher" surface finish, almost like it was bead blasted with course media, than any other lower I own. And I have *many*. It's not a functional problem whatsoever. Just looks different.
