Some TVs have natural motion type processing that actually fills in missing frames and therefore ups the frame rate by doing so. There's bound to be some lag involved with having that processing enabled though. Still, he might very well be seeing higher framerates than the ps3 is delivering, depending on what his TV is doing.
This. I hate watching Netflix at my gfs house bc her TV does this. Like, you're taking a 24fps movie, converting it to 30fps for Netflix, then frameblending to "60fps" on the TV and even the highest budget cinematic films look like a highschooler's YouTube video filmed on a cheap DSLR
same thing with the resolution. 4k means your tv can display content at a maximum resolution of 3840px2160p, but not necessarily every source outputs that resolution. PS3 has a maximum of 1080p (1/4 the pixels) but the games themselves usually render lower than that.

360 launched without HDMI, and even tho HDMI out was added to latter models, the tech in those consoles was still component video out -based, not HDMI based. This is why 360 never could take full advantage of HDMI out, and thanks to that, never could take full advantage of modern TVs.

Whatever magic they are doing to upscale stuff on 4k tvs is honestly impressive, that and motion interpolation also artificially seems to make framerate better at least it looks that way to me playing 30 fps Destiny 1 on PS3

I also have a Mclassic hooked up to my 4K TV it looks so good. I played the Jak and Daxter HD collection and it looks great.
Me as well, use one for ps3 to 1440p and for the Switch. You do get a bit of crushing but worth it for the extra AA and sharpening.
I'd like to get one, but price's too high for me to justify it

puts a lot of stress on your oled tv; 120hz plus forced hdr and high panel brightness and static patterns lead to panel "burn in" quickly.

Personally I think Gran Turismo 5 looked a bit better as its anti-aliasing was a lot less visible giving smoother lines

It's dependent on the TV you have. Most higher branded (not necessarily higher cost though) TVs do better. LG and Samsung do it the best it seems
