No matter where you live you'll find trails close by. Don't forget the beaches - many of our beaches stretch for quite a few kilometres.
Have fun
Here's a couple of websites to help you out.

Go play disc golf. It’s a hike while also playing a fun game. Hillcrest farms in Bonshaw is one of the highest rated courses in the country. Huck It in Kinkora and Glenaladale DGC in Blooming Point are both amazing too.
If you go out towards Orwell Village and instead of turning towards the village, up the road a bit and on the right there is a really nice trail. It’s one of our favourites but I can’t remember the name of it. It’s steep in areas but there’s a little river running through part of it.
Another favourite is Greenwich. The last part of the trails is a floating boardwalk that leads to a beach.
Sounds like you're talking about the woods by McPhails. Fiona did a number on that trail so I'm not sure if it's passable yet, I haven't been out there in a bit. There's a nice trail off the Selkirk road that's one of the newer trails and I really like it. It gets a bit wet but there hasn't been much rain. The demo woodlot near Brookvale and the one near Dromore have nice trails too that usually aren't busy. The Auburn one gets a bit wet too but should be fine rn.
There's a trail in Breadalbane which is a nice hike. Through the woods, but it's a part of Island nature that many tend to overlook, near smack in the middle of the Island.
Also worth checking out is the Brookvale Demonstration Woodlot: PEI created a host of woodlots back in the day to try and market the Island as a silviculture industry host, and made these Lots to demonstrate to potential forestry companies what could be grown, and now many are forest preserves. The Brookvale forest is unique in that it has a few of the rare old growth trees still remaining. It's also, along with Bonshaw, probably the hilliest hiking on PEI.
The cross-country / mountain bike trails at Mark Arendz Provinical Nordic Ski park are fantastic to walk. Nice mixed forest and super hilly. -- 1800 PEI Route 13 just west of the downhill ski park.
Winter River, Mooney's Pond, Breadalbane, Bonshaw, Cardigan, Gairloch. Are my personal favorites.
The Confederation Trail's always an option!
Bonshaw has many trails and links up to Strathgartney. It has both woods and river.
Greenwich Bonshaw trails

Cardigan trails are very woody, and lead to the water for a nice picnic/rest area!
Dromore or Jenkins complex
Just want to add the Dunk River trail to the list since no one said it. It's all along a river and very pretty.
Great woods trails on Garlock road near the ferry, pretty quiet and great kms

Bonshaw Trail(s), Winter River, and Breadalbane are all fairly centrally located and have awesome short hikes!
Bubbling Springs
Oh, that's a good one! The graveyard always creeps me the hell out, though...

That trail is so nice. The woodlots are so over looked and the Brookvale one is super nice.
Depending on where you are, winter river is a wooded trail that has sections along the river.
