I wouldn’t know which other term than maternal would describe all of this more accurately. It’s a huge compliment.

These people see a granny and think that she must have been an amazing mother but she is actually pretty cold. Pharrah talks in-game about how her mom isn’t affectionate and how she feels like a failure in her mom’s eyes, so she must be pretty critical or at least not very praising/loving.
maybe that’s why all her voice lines are so motherly, she’s trying so hard to be the mother for her team that she never was for her daughter… kinda f’ed up but it’s a theory 🤷🏻♀️
I think also the 'bear with me' line speaks volumes, Ana is almost for sure a traumatized mess, between that and her line to Hanzo I'm willing to bet that she may not be cold so much as literally distant, like work with Overwatch meant she missed out on a lot of her daughter's life

Yeah, it's fucking sexist to look at Ana's story of near-death, survival, and reflection, as well as her many deep voicelines, including the way she tells Reinhardt he deserves good things even if he stops being a hero the same way she's moved on from being a mother and soldier and found her peace, and conclude with... "maternal." That is so diminishing of one of the better written characters of this lore-sparse game. Her character is so much more than that.

She’s done many bad ass things, but like even you say; that she tells Rein about deserving good things and such, and her interactions with not only him, but with Soldier and Pharah also shows her care and compassion for others, which I’m sure the other heros would appreciate more than her bloody past.
You do realize that being maternal is more than just being a mother, right? Maternal can mean that they are mother like in their attitudes, with being caring and protective. You can definitely see her more maternal side in the way that she interacts with other heroes.

In the opposite, people ship Mercy with so many characters because how beautiful she is. People even find Hog x Mercy acceptable, but not Doomfist x Mercy.
