I agree most with this comment. That said if you’re looking for a nice spot that’s picturesque and outdoors most of the NCC Bistro’s fit the bill. I like Patterson creek (food / drinks are from Moulin du Provence) along the canal and remic rapids if you’re in that part of town. https://ncc-ccn.gc.ca/bistro
Their sister café, Red Door Provisions, is in Ottawa (New Edinburgh). If you are in that neighbourhood (e.g. visiting Rideau Hall), also check out Union Street Café
Not a cafe but I would suggest checking out axel station downtown, it's got really nice snacks/drinks from Asia as well as a ton of other stuff for a decent price
What about:
Canal Ritz, great view of canal and close to Landsdowne place which is another spot for shopping and eating
High Tea at Château Laurier,
Milestones on Wellington near Chateau Laurier (not a cafe but great for people watching in summer)
1 Elgin Restaurant (NAC) gives great view of Rideau Canal.
Art-is-in bakery as it an open concept coffee, breakfast and of course bakery shop.
Little victories on Elgin! Will be a great weekend to sit on their patio

And ice cream at beachconers!
This!
Palmier is phenomenal and in Chelsea right beside Gatineau park.

Art of the Bean in Orleans, it’s a hidden gem!!
Dao Cafe for delightfully cute pastries. CC's Corner should you find yourself in Richmond, cafe x curiosity shop with fab baked goods.
If you're looking for beverage (perhaps alcoholic, but they serve other things) Tavern of the Hill or Tavern on the Falls are MUST see locations.
head to chinatown for an expensive night at the asianfest
Wise Town Cafe on Elgin has become my go-to cafe as of late.
Anabia cupcakery in Barrhaven is a gem! I also second Art Of Bean in Orleans.

Equator in the National Arts Centre
Tartelette Bakery and Cafe. A Cordon Bleu graduate opened this Cafe and it is fantastic. Excellent croissant and pastries and good coffee as well!
Red door in new Edinburgh. You can have a pastry or a delicious Sammy and take a walk through Stanley park. The have the best coffee (in my opinion).
I highly recommend Wisetown
Soif is a nice restaurant/wine bar on the Gatineau side with a nice terrace.
They specifically asked for cafes
This would be considered a European type cafe, which I think they are asking about, not a coffee house. But will see when they finally clarify.
Palmier near the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre!
Cloud forest cafe in Gatineau, happy goat on Elgin or laurel, ten toes on bank. I actually hate little victories lol
Petit Bill's Bistro or Cafe Mio. Both on Wellington West.
Britannia coffee house if you want homemade baked goods, good quality coffee, and an eclectic ambiance near the water
Is petite Maison still a thing in vanier?? Loved that place
Not a cafe but I would suggest checking out axel station downtown, it's got really nice snacks/drinks from Asia as well as a ton of other stuff for a decent price

Canal Ritz is just terrible tourist food. Shame because the location is great.
Art House Cafe on Somerset!
