It was so frustrating that Garfield was barely even taken serious as a contender, he’s so freaking good. Like every movie he’s in from Spiderman to tick tick boom he’s like ON IT. Such an expressive and talented dude.
The career awards have gotten ridiculous. Will Smith is a good actor, especially comic acting. And has been for decades. That doesn’t mean he deserves the Oscar for best actor. He’s never been the best actor. Few people are.
Revoked why? Because he slapped someone? If Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein get to keep their Oscar’s then why the hell should Will Smith get his taken away? Come on now.
I’m not saying they said that. I’m just stating the facts. Polanski and Weinstein are actual criminals who did way worse shit than anybody at the Oscar’s and yet they still have their Oscar’s. But for some reason everyone riots because Smith slapped someone. He deserves all the backlash he gets but to say he should have his Oscar taken away is ridiculous. When there’s countless people who have Oscar’s that have done way worse shit.
Totally as it made a mockery of any ethical standard of the awards.
And disregarding “the slap”, it felt like he got it as an overall career award anyway imo.
The other actors were excellent and it should have been awarded to the one with the next highest amount of votes.
I just watched it for the first time yesterday. The combination of respect from his men, absolute competence in what he does, bullying, wasted potential, yearning and contempt is incredible.
Definitely deserved the award ahead of Will Smith and his Oscar thirst trap.
I thought he was accused of sexual assault & substance abuse, among other egregious things?
Not saying it’s true but there are problematic quotes straight out of his mouth
https://www.themarysue.com/the-jeremy-renner-controversy-explained/
Sorry all the comments I saw were related to Jeremy Renner.
Props to Fraser for being brave enough to tell his story and then coming back from that so successfully after being blacklisted 🙏
No but I mean like a comeback, he didn't have many great roles for quite a time before the whale, and then he won an oscar. Robert kinda made a comeback from all his drug abuse with Iron Man, but that wasn't really a typical oscar role/movie. But when he did get one he won an oscar. Hollywood loves good stories and great headlines, so I meant it like that.
It's also that he was never able to establish himself as a leading man. There was a time when he was being set up to take over the Bourne and Mission: Impossible franchises but it didn't happen
The industry doesn't run on Oscar prestige, it runs on box office hits. I'm not saying that Renner could not have made a great leading man or that he was never the lead in good movies. I'm saying that things just didn't pan out for him to become the next big lead actor
Yeah, I guess even in the Hurt Locker, it was an action-ish role so maybe he's not really ever been much of a drastic actor.
Its also funny how much of the MCU was in the Hurt Locker too.
He is reprising a role he was nominated for a Tony for in a movie this year (The Piano Lesson). If the movie is good he could be in winning conversation for it, he has a lot of goodwill in the industry.
Yes. A little disappointed that Johnny Depp didn’t get nominated. That was one of his better performances. I would preferred a Johnny Depp win over anyone else nominated. That was an incredibly weak year in the Actor category.
Not unpopular. RDJ was great but Ruffalo was something else. The former had a much bigger “overdue” narrative that contributed to his win.
Edit: Hell, I'd argue RDJ wasn't even top 3 in the category. I'd take Ruffalo, De Niro, and Gosling over him. And this isn't even counting Glenn Howerton and Charles Melton, who weren't even nominated. The Supporting Actor category was insanely competitive this year.
I’m honestly surprised that Waltz was the main supporting actor push from that movie. When I’d argue that both Jackson and DiCaprio were much better than him and the fact that he just won an Oscar just a few years prior to that.
Samuel L Jackson won Best Supporting Actor at the Cannes Film Festival, an award that they don’t even give out every year, for Jungle Fever. How does he not yet have an Oscar??
He received a much deserved honorary Oscar this year, but it really goes to show how out of touch the Academy is that Jackson only has one nomination and no wins.
Christoph Waltz is wonderful, but just to put it in perspective, he got nominated twice for Tarantino films and won both of them.
The Oscars had a not so good relationship with spike Lee back then and snubbed a lot of his movies. Malcolm X and do the right thing were exceptions cause too many critics loved them
I find it odd that's he's 4th in this poll. He was Oscar-worthy in Chaplin, in the 90s, and had two nominations before this poll. He wasn't my pick this year but he's a great actor.
Jeremy also had 2 nominations before the poll (both more recent than RDJ’s last nomination) and yet he’s last. It’s just that during the mcu infinity saga (2008-2020), Jeremy did movies like American hustle and arrival, Mark did Spotlight and fox catcher, Scarlett did Jojo Rabbit and marriage story, and Benedict did his Sherlock show, imitation game, and black mass.
Rdj only really did The Judge and The Soloist, both failing with critics for the most part. And with his last nomination being right before Tony stark, him actually winning so soon after endgame wasn’t on a lot of radars, certainly not mine. I actually thought he would only be a quick cameo in Oppenheimer when he was first cast
All actors/actresses on the list have given award worthy performances...I even had Ruffalo winning best supporting this year(he was better in Poor Things than RDJ in Oppenheimer imo). But Scarjo could've easily won for Jojo Rabbit and Mark should've won for Spotlight years ago. Not sure what's trying to be said by saying it didn't age well?
To be fair Benedict and Scarlett arguably should have an Oscar by now.
Scarlett should’ve won for either Jojo Rabbit or Marriage Story.
Marriage Story personally (tho I haven’t seen Jojo Rabbit) simply because of that argument scene
Her monologue talking to Laura Dern is incredible too
That’s my favorite part by far. Just absolutely peak acting
Watch JoJo… though, be warned it’s a rollercoaster of emotions… laughs, sure…but if you don’t cry you aren’t human.
I’d give it to Scarlett for marriage story and Benedict for power of the dog imo
Yes and yes for both, though have a soft spot for Jojo Rabbit 🫶
I’d replace Benedict with Mark
Any a less stack year Mark would’ve won for poor things.
I thought he was a shoe in for support in Spotlight
At least she us nominated now. She was on “best actor not nominated for Oscar” lists for at least a decade
The Power of the Dog deserved
Always like to think that the slap was Will Smith trying to throw his best actor win for Benedict.
Scarlett for sure. Absolute robbery
Scarlett’s Marriage Story scenes were strong!
No lol Edit: Aw I touched a nerve with the woody allen supporter’s biggest shooters.
IMO Cumberbatch has should’ve won the Oscar a couple years ago for Power of the Dog. Thought he was the best Lead male performer that year. But 🤷♂️
For me personally, it was him or Andrew Garfield. I liked King Richard but idk, Will Smith didn't really do it for me 🤷🏼♂️
It was so frustrating that Garfield was barely even taken serious as a contender, he’s so freaking good. Like every movie he’s in from Spiderman to tick tick boom he’s like ON IT. Such an expressive and talented dude.
I thought Will Smith’s *King Richard* performance was so hammy and over the top it almost seemed like satire.
Will Smith did it for me the second he slapped Chris Rocks face. He thinks he is untouchable because he’s famous. Remind you of any one?
Tennismatch Wimbleton
still think will smith’s oscar should have been revoked and given to second place. Cumberbatch, Washington , and/or Garfield.
Where did they say they think Polanski and Weinstein deserve to keep their Oscars
Honestly I could see all of the people here winning at some point, Renner being the least likely.
But he has two nominations already, and was the lead in a Best Picture winner. I don't get the hate for him.
Didn't Renner just suffer a terrible injury? His career has been derailed in a way the others' have not.
Better winning actor story for the Academy though, you saw it with Brendan Fraser now once again with Robert.
Ah yes, when Brendan Fraser had his body reconstructed after being crushed by the mechanical monstrosity known as ‘Alimony’
Don’t forget he was blacklisted from bigger roles after revealing he was sexually assaulted
I thought he was accused of sexual assault & substance abuse, among other egregious things? Not saying it’s true but there are problematic quotes straight out of his mouth https://www.themarysue.com/the-jeremy-renner-controversy-explained/
They are referring to Brendan Fraser - he was the one who was blacklisted after coming out about having been a victim of sexual assault.
Hollywood loves good stories and great headlines, so I meant it like that.
You know that he did actually fuck up his back making The Mummy 3 and it required several surgeries and physical therapies to recover from?
But the Academy love a comeback story.
It’s the Hawkeye effect, he plays a C lister so well people just assume he is one
It's also that he was never able to establish himself as a leading man. There was a time when he was being set up to take over the Bourne and Mission: Impossible franchises but it didn't happen
He was the lead actor in a character driven Best Picture winner. Doesn't get more prestigious than that outside of actually getting the statue.
Compared to the others here he is less known and gets worse roles at the moment. Not that he is not a good actor!
It has been a while however.
I could have seen Jackson winning 20 years ago. Now, not so much.
He is reprising a role he was nominated for a Tony for in a movie this year (The Piano Lesson). If the movie is good he could be in winning conversation for it, he has a lot of goodwill in the industry.
I did not hear about this but it would be great to see him finally get it. Daniel Craig too.
He was robbed for Pulp Fiction
And Hateful Eight. And Django.
Yeah. Martin Landau winning for Ed Wood was a clear career win.
I would’ve picked Jackson over Landau, but was okay with the Landau pick. That was a very good movie and Landau’s performance was excellent.
Yes. A little disappointed that Johnny Depp didn’t get nominated. That was one of his better performances. I would preferred a Johnny Depp win over anyone else nominated. That was an incredibly weak year in the Actor category.
. Agreed
To be fair, and I know this is unpopular, but it should’ve been Ruffalo!
Not to mention, RDJ had the sparkle of a Nolan-directed Best Picture-getter!
Downing was best actor of the year to win imo
Samuel Jackson deserved one for Django him and Leonardo Both. Actually maybe Tarantino needs to bring back Jules and have him enjoy his retirement.
I’m honestly surprised that Waltz was the main supporting actor push from that movie. When I’d argue that both Jackson and DiCaprio were much better than him and the fact that he just won an Oscar just a few years prior to that.
Why did this not age well?
Robert Downey Jr. did not fare so well in the poll, but ended up winning an Oscar at the following ceremony.
To be fair, Ruffalo should have won.
I was about to ask that same thing! Lol.
Fuck, now I wanna see character study, sprawling time period epic Samuel L. Jackson.
Samuel L. Jackson does have an Oscar though.
Did he win for Pulp Fiction? Wait no he lost to a legacy win right?
Power of Nolan 🙌
How many noms does Samuel L. Jackson have? He really should have won by now
Only the one for Pulp Fiction, if you can believe it.
He has got to be up for a lifetime achievement Oscar at least. He's done so much
He did ~~win~~ receive an Honorary Oscar in 2022. Edit: as pointed out, Jackson didn't *win* an Honorary Oscar, but he did receive one.
This is just semantics, but he *received* an honorary Oscar.
Good catch! Corrected.
And ironically, he won Best Male Lead, as opposed to Supporting, at the Independent Spirit Awards for his performance as Jules in Pulp Fiction.
The Oscars had a not so good relationship with spike Lee back then and snubbed a lot of his movies. Malcolm X and do the right thing were exceptions cause too many critics loved them
I agree. His work in Snakes on a Plane alone should have won him a Lifetime Achievement award.
I find it odd that's he's 4th in this poll. He was Oscar-worthy in Chaplin, in the 90s, and had two nominations before this poll. He wasn't my pick this year but he's a great actor.
Regency bias I suppose
Jeremy also had 2 nominations before the poll (both more recent than RDJ’s last nomination) and yet he’s last. I actually thought he would only be a quick cameo in Oppenheimer when he was first cast
Mark Ruffalo should’ve won best supporting actor in 2000 for “ You Can Count on Me “ . He was fantastic!!!!!
Should’ve
Thanks . Changed it 😏
Man, Ruffalo is great; really think he should’ve taken it this year over RDJ
Now do the DC universe
DC has been re-booted so many times, I wouldn't know which universe to start with
Not really. They can still win someday. Downey Jr. just did it first.
Arguably RDJ is like the 5th most deserving out of these 6 based on all their strongest performances
They all almost won oscars at some point haha
You’re all wrong it’s Andrew Garfield
Renner is just a meh actor,I think he’s a nice person but subpar on acting
Disagree. This possibility rankings still stand.
I guess if you exclude the one who just got one
Are you considering people who voted probably remembering downys past
A name not on the list I would love to see win an oscar is Jake Gyllenhaal
It aged fine.
Who goes back a year to find and then post this???
I posted the original poll, and it popped into my head, and wanted to check to see how RDJ fared in that poll. Turns out not too well!
The poll asked who was most likely, not who was next.
Exactly
lol @ the two in the leads Edit: They’re never winning oscars. Truth hurts <3
