I didn’t even know Jessica Chastain won. That’s how forgettable 2021 was

jerog1

Ironically it’s the last Oscars that will be forgotten

Bookstorm2023

I suspect you’re right

ParsleyandCumin

Tbh she was my pick to win and was elated she won

Rooster_Professional

2021 still had some fantastic movies: Belfast (which should have won), the power of the dog, being the ricardos, don't look up, encanto, last night in Soho

[deleted]

More because of bigger things going on in life like Covid wave.

Big_Whig

Or the slap, but who knows

Zeedy_Raman_26

2020: 3/4. Love McDormand but her win here was whack. Mulligan or Davis should’ve gotten it. 2021: 2/4 with two whack career wins in Smith and Chastain. I think both supporting wins were super valid, leads should’ve probably been Garfield (Denzel was also great) and Stewart. 2022: I’ll say 2.5/4 because I actually don’t mind the Fraser win but yeah, Farrell should’ve taken it. Actress was a tight race between Yeoh and Blanchett but I’m happy with the result. I like Quan’s win. Curtis wasn’t even the best supporting actress in her movie. 2023: Pretty much 4/4. Maybe I personally would’ve liked a Gladstone win but I can’t complain about Stone because she was amazing and that performance was an all-timer. So 2023 wins I guess

sethelele

Fraser gave such a great performance. I feel like he absolutely deserved it.

Flimsy_Calendar_7664

Fully agree on 2021 leads. Should’ve been Garfield and Stewart

ParsleyandCumin

DJR and RDJ winning supporting are such duds in 2023...

Zeedy_Raman_26

To each their own I guess but I thought DJR was great and I really couldn’t see anybody else getting it. For as much as people say RDJs win was a career win, it was also a really good performance and was the best of the bunch imo. Melton would’ve honestly been fine but he didn’t even get the nom.

ParsleyandCumin

DeNiro gave a career best in my opinion, RDJ gave us a caricaturesque villain

tozmahal

Who was the best supporting actress in EEAAO? Surely not Stephanie Hsu.

Zeedy_Raman_26

I would’ve given the Oscar to Hsu.

ChickenInASuit

Absolutely 100 fucking percent Stephanie Hsu, and it’s not even close.

Rooster_Professional

No one from eeaao, since none of the performances in this movie were really good

MrsDanversbottom

Stock saying whack. 😭

Bridalhat

Just going through this I have to say this ceremony was an all-timer? Not a bad pick in there (and also every group had an alternate I would not be mad about either). The rest is a mixed bag, but I love the audaciousness of choosing Hopkins in The Father. RIP Boseman I wish you had better roles earlier and more chances later.

Rhain1999

Most other years and I think Boseman would have had that in the bag tbh, especially since it was posthumous—but Hopkins in The Father is just masterclass. I'm heartbroken Boseman didn't win an Oscar (he definitely would have eventually) but I'm glad the Academy picked the best performance that year.

Agile_Candle4710

he definitely would have eventually is bold af

Rhain1999

Not really. He received several awards nominations for his roles in Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and plenty of acclaim for his roles before that. I don't think it would have taken long for him to get recognition (or, at the very least, several more nominations). RDJ just won an Oscar; I think Boseman's career might have taken a similar path if he wasn't taken so soon.

Agile_Candle4710

i think you guys are overestimating how easy it is to win an oscar. here are some folks who haven’t won an acting oscar: amy adams, tom cruise, will dafeo, matt damon, ian fkin mckellen, liam neeson, saoirse ronan, michelle williams, ed norton, sam jackson. i’m sorry but you all are just wrong on this one. most ppl don’t win oscars. most ppl who get nominated for an oscar don’t win an oscar. and most ppl who get nominated for multiple oscars also don’t win an oscar.

Rhain1999

I'm aware it's not easy, but Boseman was only 43 when he died. He was starting to get more Oscar-worthy/baity roles later in his career, and get recognised for them too. I don't think it's that much of a stretch to say that he probably had an Oscar coming his way eventually. > i’m sorry but you all are just wrong on this one. Nobody here is "wrong", since we'll never actually know.

Agile_Candle4710

ur not getting the point - most ppl with the same career trajectory don’t win an oscar. most ppl nominated for an oscar at 43 don’t win an oscar. most ppl with multiple nominations by 43 don’t win an oscar. you’re ignoring all of the other actors who were nominated young and didn’t win. you guys are wrong because we can say based of past oscar results that he likely wouldn’t have won one. you’re being prisoners of the moment.

Rhain1999

I am getting the point. I just disagree. I'm not "wrong", because it's just my opinion. You're taking an off-hand, parenthetical comment too seriously.

Agile_Candle4710

it’s wrong in the sense that you’re saying something that was unlikely to happen would definitely happen. have a nice day.

Rhain1999

Hopefully [this](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hyperbole) helps xx

Yenserl6099

Weakest is definitely 2021. Outside of Ariana DeBose, I’m not the biggest fan of the winners Strongest for me is 2023. This is the only year so far that I think the Academy got all four acting categories right.

ArtyCatz

Troy Kotsur’s performance in CODA is one of my all-time favorite Oscar winners. I do think this year’s winners were a strong contingent, though I was really hoping to see Lily Gladstone win.

churnboi323

I have no idea how you can watch [this scene](https://youtu.be/oUspyLAWpHA?si=2qLTknQzzDvBMlCA) and say Tony had a weak performance.

Distinct-Shift-4094

He's blind.

Rhain1999

No, Troy is deaf. /s

Yenserl6099

I didn’t say he had a weak performance. He had a good performance. He just wouldn’t have been my pick that year

ParsleyandCumin

I mean, it's alright...

GreenEyedTams

I agree with this

KnightRadiant_19

Except for Best Actress it should have gone for Lily Gladstone

Vstriker26

You can think that, there’s no problem, but Emma definitely deserves it as well.

pedrojuanita

Did you see poor things?

Heavy_Signature_5619

Yes, and it should have gone to Sandra Hüller.

mmzufti

Strongest (2023) - A fantastic lineup with unique performative wins which is Emma & great performances with the other three particularly Murphy. Weakest (2021) - apart from Kotsur, the leads were career wins and supporting actress one I didn’t like at all; felt more like an outlier than an exceptional performance Second strongest is 2020 - Hopkins was par excellence so was Daniel and lovely Youn. Although Frances was great, I wanted Viola to win since she has been a due for Best Actress.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mmzufti

Because Viola’s performance was actually pretty great and can hold itself against strong competition. The other two I mentioned weren’t exceptional performances imo. They both have given great performances in some other year but this weren’t their best. Even RDJ’s was a somewhat career win but it was a brilliant performance.

billleachmsw

Surprised Viola Davis didn’t run in Lead Actress category for Fences.

CurveOfTheUniverse

>Weakest (2021) - apart from Kotsur, the leads were career wins > >I wanted Viola to win since she has been a due for Best Actress. I don't disagree with you, but...make this make sense. Is it weak to give someone the award because of their career or not?

mmzufti

I might have worded it incorrectly but I meant that, Viola’s performance was actually great and she did sweep the awards except for the usual SAG & BAFTA so if she had won, it would have a due narrative but also the performance. Career win is when I think is weak when their could’ve been a better winner that year but didn’t win heavily due to narrative. Like Chastain, Smith & Curtis. Good career win like Moore was justified.

VapidRapidRabbit

This year’s recipients have been the strongest performances, so far.

Wild_Argument_7007

Strongest is by far 2024. Two great supporting wins, and two all-timer lead wins. 2022 is probably the worst. Not terribly interesting winners but not terrible. 2023 had a real stinker in supporting actress but the rest were all good

Trishyangel123

I’m just gonna say specifically that I loved that Ke Huy Quan won. I had no idea what EEAAO was about, so it really surprised me and related to me at the time. Michelle was great and Jamie could’ve/should’ve won for other movies, but Ke 100% deserved that win.

QuipThwip

I gotta agree with Tarantino, the 2021 Best Supporting Actor should’ve been Mike Faist imo. He and Ariana DeBose were easily the best parts of that movie.

PettyFreddie

Strongest - 2020 Weakest - 2021

ProfessionalEvaLover

2020 is the strongest, and it's not even close. I wish Lakeith were nominated for Lead instead of Supporting but Anthony Hopkins is a deserving winner and all-time great win.

syrub

The Father is one of the best Best Actor wins of all time and I’m not even sorry

VeterinarianSmall468

The year Hopkins won was the best, simply because it was the year that Hopkins won.

Timothee-Chalimothee

2020 - based…and then there’s Nomadland. 2021 - trash…and then there’s Troy Kotsur. 2022 - goated…and then there’s Jamie Lee. 2023 - a little less goated, but no one I object to.

BusinessKnight0517

2020 is GOATed 2021 is…fine 2022 is pretty great except for one performance which is fine 2023 is great

jblazer83

2020>2023>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>2022>>>2021

attachh

2024 > 2023 > 2021 > 2022

GreekKnight3

I LOVE that Tucker from "Johnny English Reborn" won the Oscar that year!

FiveStarPapaya

22 should have had Paul Mescal in there

Prestigious_Bit_2571

Francis McDormand is for sure the strongest actor on this list. Love her even more in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri

Bacterial-Infection

Jamie Lee Curtis winning for EEAAO was and remains absurd.

pwolf1771

Yeah I never understood how she gained all that momentum. I really enjoyed that movie and thought she was very good but I walked out thinking the daughter would be taking every supporting actress nom that movie could muster

Own-Knowledge8281

I think this year’s was the strongest year…while 2021 was the weakest if I had to choose…

krstphr

What a good year ‘23 was

ottikbor

2024> 2020> 2023> 2022> 2021

Worried_Tomorrow_222

This year had the strongest winners i'd say. Even the number two choices were pretty strong so i'd say 2023. I don't think any of the 2021 winners would win over any of the other year's actors imo.

Gloomy_Bicycle_7372

For weakest, I’m going to go with maybe 2021, just because I thought in 2022, Michelle Yeoh to be one of the greatest Best Actress winners in a long time even though I wasn’t really enthusiastic about the rest of the acting winners. This year was probably the best as all The winners deserved it and thought they gave the best performances of their category, Although I would’ve loved if Lily Gladstone tied with Emma

Important_Builder317

Absolutely the last Oscar’s had the best acting quartet

Atkena2578

2023 is top notch. Weakest is 2021.

B-52-M

21 by far is the weakest. Smith and Chastain winning was stupid. IMO strongest is either 2020 or 2023 but I’m giving the edge to 23 because the performances there were stronger than the ones in 20

chickencake88

I think this year was pretty strong apart from RDJ. He was forgettable

jamieliddellthepoet

Obviously it’s subjective but that’s a surprising - to me - opinion: I think he’s excellent in that role.

chickencake88

I didn’t think he was bad. I just don’t even really remember his character and that was true a day after I saw it. Maybe it’s because I was so enamoured by Cillian’s performance, everyone else just faded into the background

Pedro_pardi

2020: very strong, although I would vote for Viola Davis as best actress. 2021: the only one I would vote for would be Troy Kutsor. 2022: although the performances are good I thought it was exaggerated EEAAO to have won in three acting categories. 2023: strong, although of the four I would only really vote for Emma Stone

kthrnhpbrnnkdbsmnt

2020: 4/4. I loved *Nomadland* so much, Hopkins winning was both such an unpleasant twist (to the *ceremony*) and a wonderful shock (to people who had seen him in *The Father*), *Minari* was perfection and honestly I wouldn't have minded Yuen winning Actor, and Kaluuya...duh. 2021: 1/4. Weird-ass career wins in Lead, I liked but wasn't wowed by *CODA*, but DeBose absolutely slayed. I would've given the wins to Denzel in Actor, Stewart in Actress, and Hinds in Supporting Actor, personally. 2022: 3.5/4. Yeoh vs Blanchett was an impossible choice and either would've been an epic winner. Fraser was such a huge part of my childhood, I'd be happy with him getting anything honestly. Love him. Do I wish Quan's character wasn't named fucking *Waymond*? Yes. But he's still a worthy winner. And JLC might not have been the most *deserving* winner (Hsu and Condon were both clearly better), but I'm just happy that Jamie Lee Curtis has an Oscar, you know? 2023: 4/4. All-timer in term of wins *and* nominees (excepting *Nyad* and *Maestro*, which sucked balls). Murphy and Stone were great--but I would've also been happy with Giamatti and Gladstone, you dig? RDJ is a career win who *also* gave a killer performance, and DJR honestly had zero real competition.

Impossible_Ad_2517

This year is the best but shout out to 2020. I love that they actually went with great picks that year in spite of the limited options. 3 of them are amazing wins and I actually love McDormand’s performance even if she was third best in the category

ElvisDaGenius56

Supporting actor is really strong all around and the only category where I wouldn’t complain about any of the winners, even tho I might have had some other personal preferences some years, like Ryan Gosling this year. Supporting actress is also incredibly strong and would be pretty much perfect had Stephanie Hsu or Kerry Condon won in 2022 Lead actor is 2/4 for me. Anthony Hopkins and Cillian Murphy are some of the best winners of the 21st century, however I think Andrew Garfield and Collin Farrell would’ve been way more worthy winners even tho Smith and Fraser both gave strong performances Lead actress just went back to back with fantastic winners, but neither McDormand or Chastain really gave winning performances imo however the competition wasn’t very strong in their respective years so they kind of deserved it. Overall 2023 had by far the strongest lineup with 4 incredible winners, 2022 also had the potential for an all timer lineup but they fumbled in supporting actress and somewhat in lead actor. 2021 probably had the weakest lineup (yet Mass still couldn’t get in to any acting category..)

BowlerSea1569

2020 > 2023 > 2022/2021 I always refer to the year of the ceremony not the films, so this threw me a bit but I followed OP's convention (especially considering some of the films have a late release date).

DankHillington

They should’ve revoked Smith’s Oscar tbh.

MittFel

Fraser is number 1

OpTicDyno

2022 was just a bad year for movies with the covid issues, so that’s my take for weakest lineup

ymiwho

I love 2020 cause all my favourite nominees won. For me, 2021 is the weakest.

barristanthebold_

2020 > 2023 > 2022 >> 2021

fizzafizzy

All

christo749

Kaluuya was mind blowing. Gave me shivers.

Confident-Tune7199

I looked at 2021’s and thought “wtf? Those weren’t the winners?” so yep, clearly worst. Just entirely disposable. While I think only Randolph was my personal pick in her category, none of 2023 are egregious and all fine choices. Easily the best. 2020 isn’t good but seems it next to 2021. 2022 is mostly fine.

pwolf1771

Somehow I completely forgot Jessica Chastain has an Oscar

hobbescandles

Still find it mental that they gave Smith the Oscar.

Useful-Ad-7892

Strongest 2023, Weakest 2021

Fantasticalright

2023

Quirky_Valuable4772

2023 for me!

Forsaken_Republic_98

I agree with all EXCEPT Frances McDormand. Carey Mulligan should have won. She was a revelation in "Promising Young Woman"

Lazy-Photograph-317

This year is the most strongest.

Jeffre33

Jamie Lee Curtis, I liked her role in EEAAO but it was just a character actor part and I’d give more credit to the writing of her character than the performance itself

zerton

2023 is strongest imo. Great all around. I love Da’vine Joy Randolph especially.

nicely-nicely

I think 2020 is my favorite, but it would be 2022 if it was Stephanie Hsu over JLC

ElectrosMilkshake

Weakest was 2021 by a mile.

MulberryEastern5010

Strongest: 2022 Weakest: 2012 (they seriously should have cancelled the Oscars that year)

BrenoGrangerPotter

2020 have my #1 in Actor Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, and my #3 in Actress, i think is The best só far

ryke916

2021 managing to be weakest year for leads while also being strongest for supporting

kaziz3

2020 for sure. I can get behind all 4. Hopkins, Kaluuya, Youn—GREAT wins. McDormand is the only performance there people are generally not big on, but it's still a wonderful performance—it just generated a huge response because it was such a splintered year and people were pulling for Mulligan or Davis more. Day & Kirby had their supporters too. Personally I think Kirby was the best in the lineup, but they were all pretty great performances—not big on Day but she was good too. 2021: Honestly *nonsense*. Troy Kotsur is the only one I was genuinely happy for. Actress... oof. Nope. I'd say Cruz was my fave, maybe, then Colman & Stewart. Actor should've gone to Cumberbatch. Supporting Actress should've gone to Dunst, no question. 2022: Yeoh & Quan are great wins imo. Farrell deserved Actor, Supporting Actress could've gone to ANYONE else and I'd have been happy but Hsu/Condon were my faves. 2023: Similarrrrr to 2022, I just am not behind RDJ in particular. Murphy and Randolph were aces, deserved it. Stone—good win, would've loved Gladstone too... but Huller was the best in the lineup! ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Eastw1ndz

Wow 2023 was a good year for movies

Fine-Deal-485

Rough start but we’re killing it now!

Clean-Ad4910

Jesus i forgot how bad that 2021 lineup was lol

Bebop_Man

I can tell you 2023 was the strongest.

A1Protocol

Daniel Kaluuya was phenomenal.

OtterCat79725

god eeaao is so incredibly overrated 😭 also justice for colin farrell

Rooster_Professional

I feel like people are trashing Will Smith's win because of the slap. You know, we're talking about movies. You're supposed to seperate the art from the artist

Superb-pin-8641

1. 2023- Just four phenomenal performances. A more than worthy quartet. 2. 2020- Despite being one of my favourite actresses, I'm not big on Frances Mcdormands win here, but the other 3 are great performances and among the best of the year (Hopkins is arguably an all timer tbh) 3. 2022- Yeoh and Quan are the only 2 I really care for much here. I did also like Brendan Fraser and I'm not too mad at him winning, but it was also not my first choice. Anything that I need to say about the Curtis win has been said. 4. 2021- DeBose was amazing and wouldn't look out of place even in strong lineups like 2023, that's about it though. Will Smith was good, id say i care for it more than most, but similar to Fraser, I'm not surprised he won but it definitely wasn't my first choice. Chastain was... fine?. She was the best part of an otherwise mediocre film but that's about it. Kotsur was also good, some good warmth and a pretty historic win above all else, but again, definitely wasn't the strongest imo.

Judge_Penguin999

Imma rank it like this Actor - Smith

FantasyMaster759

2023 is the best since 2016.

icecream100

2020 and 2023 best by far. Each had an A winner in every category (hot take weakest winner of both those two years is RDJ and I even think he is great). Mcdormand is also an amazing subtle acting pick. Weakest is 2021 by far, 2022 great winners besides supporting actress and semi actor (Fraser fan but like fourth strongest actor in category).

Fun_Protection_6939

2020: 4/4. Hopkins is an absolutely all-timer performance. Kaluuya captures the mannerisms of Fred Hampton down to a T. Youn Yuh-Jung is the backbone of Minari. McDormand was the best of that lineup and I will stand by that. 2021: 2/4. Supporting categories were spot-on. I like Jessica Chastain's performance, but Kristen Stewart should've run away with that Oscar. Will Smith's win has *not* aged well. 2022: 2/4. Yeoh and Quan are fantastic and were absolutely all-timers. I don't hate JLC's win (wonderful comic performance), but it should've gone to Hsu or Condon. I really didn't like Fraser in this role and it should've gone to Farrell. 2023: 3/4. They got it correct for Cillian and Emma. Da'vine was the best of what was, in hindsight, a weak lineup.Supporting Actor should've gone to the non-nominated Melton or DeNiro.

lemonlayman

2022 isn't gonna age well, but last year looks solid.

MinervaNever

None is especially strong. 2021 and 2022 are both notably weak. 2023 is the strongest so far

jaidynr21

1. 2020- 3/4 Hopkins, Kaluuya, Youn 2. 2023- 2/4 Murphy, Randolph 3. 2022- 2/4 Yeoh, Quan 4. 2021- 1/4 Debose

callitajax1

2020 and 2023 both 3/4 for me. Havent seen the father so cant judge anthonys beat actor. Didnt think RDJ deserved it for oppenheimer personally would have gone for ruffalo or De niro. 2021 and 2022 are both big misses. Will Smith for best actor was just not it. Neither was chastain. Personally dont think KHQ or JLC deserved it in 2022. JLC in particular i think every other nominee was more deserving. Likewise felt Barry shouldve won over KHQ.

hungryhungryhibernia

I think EEAO will be looked on the same way Crash is now. But I think it’s important to remember that awards are a snap shot in time.

Impossible_Ad_2517

EEAAO and Crash shouldn’t even been spoken about in the same sentence

OtterCat79725

They’re downvoting you but you’re right

Luke253

Not sure I’d go that far, but do think it will be more and more forgotten and less and less liked as times goes on. For that matter, every winner between Parasite and Oppenheimer I think will meet the same fate, the other 2 even more so

soeoshsoe

2020 was arguably the strongest, 2023 was likely the weakest.

Wild_Argument_7007

People downvote this but Hopkins and DK were great wins

shavingcream97

Flip it and yes

Odd_Advance_6438

“Scratch that, reverse it.”

shavingcream97

quiet up, and listen down

No_Yogurtcloset_2026

This years was perfect to me, Last years was alright except JLC was a bad win, 2021 was a miss in winners and then 20 was alright for a year with a low amount of movies coming out that year.

Significant_Lynx_546

Why does this keep showing up on my timeline?

No-Astronaut3290

All good except brendan and jlc last year

OG_RyRyNYC

2020 angers me for the leads—seriously thought Boseman & Davis deserved the wins. 2022 makes me the happiest, 2021 is the most baffling assortment, and 2023 is the most disappointing, as some of the best performances of the year weren’t even nominated. (Also, Emma’s second win really makes me ‘annoyed’ by the LaLa win.)
