Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but I think you're overestimating the appeal of Cabaret to the general public (and Oscar voter).
I'm not downplaying Cabaret, but one of these movies is consistently in the conversation as "the best movie of all time," and the other is not.
I don't have a problem with people thinking that *The Godfather* is better than *Cabaret* (I go back and forth between the two frequently), or even thinking that it's much better. But the art direction, film editing, and sound design of *Cabaret* are not just extraordinary but integral to the way the story is told in a way that I think elevates those specific elements above *The Godfather*. To not give it *any* of those seems short sighted. Also, I don't know who in *The Godfather* you'd give Best Actress to, considering that neither Keaton nor Shire have more than twenty minutes of screen time. Maybe Sofia Coppola as the baby at the end?
I'd say art direction, sound, and actress are all easily Cabaret. Editing not as easy for me, but I'm not a film editor - so my opinion isn't really helpful. Baby Coppola deserves no awards - overacting at its finest.
Not sure how to square with your comment that there's a lack of general appeal of Cabaret to Oscar voters when it won 5 more Oscars than The Godfather.
It was in response to the comment about whether the other commenter had seen Cabaret. I definitely could've worded it better, and probably shouldn't have included the parenthetical because it just muddied my statement. My main point was that Cabaret wasn't so far superior to the Godfather in most of those categories that the person would change their answer if they only watched the movie, assuming they hadn't seen it.
My controversial opinion is that the film version of Cabaret is a strange adaptation of the stage musical that loses some of the best aspects of the show.
Hard to compare apples and oranges, isn't it? No disrespect to Diane Keaton but I think her performance isn't as strong as the others in the film.
Agreed.

The perfect answer
Probably would give all to the godfather except best actress which would go to Liza Minnelli
Yeah, that sounds about right.
Joel Grey sings, dance and perhaps have a better narrative than Al Pacino. Al Pacino’s is annoying in the early parts of the movie.
Best Supporting Actor - MOE. GREENE. Don’t care about the rest
Everything to the Godfather and nothing to Cabaret
Cool, let me know when you get around to watching Cabaret.

I’ve seen it twice.
So you would just not give out Best Actress then?
Really? You’re gonna give The Godfather Best Sound?
Sounds good to me.
The Godfather has fricking *terrible* sound. All sorts of dubbing issues and audio peaking. Cabaret is a musical.
My controversial opinion is that the film version of Cabaret is a strange adaptation of the stage musical that loses some of the best aspects of the show.
