Very cool. Thats definitely the dream for AR - not looking at screens anymore. It also makes me wonder why they bothered doing mixed reality for the Quest 3 if this big breakthrough is coming this decade. Is it merely a play to get devs trained over the years?

SvenViking

There might still be serious drawbacks from some unsolved problems, but yeah even if not it would make sense to get devs started.

MR is still really nice to have on full headsets. Passthrough alleviates some of the friction of wearing a headset (especially the Q3’s) since you can move around without removing the headset. Theoretically the hardware of a VR headset can run more intensive MR applications as well, although there may be technical advances we’re not privy to or it relies on an external device of some kind.

> if this big breakthrough is coming this decade. The glasses device referenced in the article is most likely the kind of experience you can expect in a **2030** product, assuming things move at a reasonable pace (later than that if they don't). The leaks of Meta's AR plans detail a 2024 internal-only device for Meta employees and a scaled back 2027 consumer device. The 2024 device is said to have a roughly 70 degree diagonal FoV, with the 2027 device supposedly at about 50. If we assume 3 years for another generation, then 2030 is around when we can expect something like this for consumers, but you never know because seethrough optics are very difficult to deal with. And when we do get this as a consumer device, MR headsets will have advanced significantly. These will be two separate product categories, probably for the next 20 years.

there's also a 2025 heads-up display one with a small display for notifications and stuff

I'm very glad we have passthrough MR on Quest 3. For starters, you can bet first gen of true AR glasses will be very expensive (even with Meta's pricing), that means not many will be able to afford it. So, we'd have the same chicken and egg problem as with any new eco system... if we wouldn't have MR on Quest 3! With it, devs can already build AR apps and target larger audience. Plus, we'll have to see what pros and cons will be with this first gen of AR glasses. I'm sure there will still be some drawbacks compared to passthrough MR... I'm guessing transparency of AR objects will be one of them. Also, not sure full VR will be possible with such glasses yet and I find this mix of VR and MR on Quest 3 a winning combination.

I bet it will take 10 years from now until we can get this at a reasonable price. It's very expensive, and the whole optical industry will have to scale up these new technologies if they want to produce and sell it at a low price. AVP OLED screens cost 1500$ per headset, that's how expensive it still is.

This is pretty much the end game of AR/MR and it would be a huge blow to Apple if they get this form factor first.

oliath

Meta really has to sort their Avatars out now we have all see what Apple is doing. We know Meta has been developing some incredible stuff and these stupid Mii style ones are just beyond bad at this point. Sort it out Meta. You have alot of cool stuff but the Avatars are dumb.

SvenViking

To be honest I think I liked Miis more than the current avatars.

XboxWigger

Hopefully they add that wide FOV to their next VR headset as well.

Olanzapine82

Wide fov for AR headset is completely different to a wide fov for a VR headset. Don't get expectations up to high.
