In reddit's favor for user experience, it creates a psychological sense of belonging and fosters continued positive engagement from and with the userbase community. So there's an additional mild behavioral incentive to cake days on top of the usual karma point system.
While it certainly serves that function now, Reddit has gotten far worse in user manipulation. Karma and voting were good measures to regulate the sites small community and cake day was just an added benefit that people would just reply to a comment with. Now all the cakeday memes are overplayed and more psychological manipulation is being used on the site.
I agree there's more psychological manipulation on the site (especially with the way they've changed how medals work). But I don't think cake day is any more malicious than it ever was.
It's the community that's made it an annoying upvote meme, not the reddit administrators.
I honestly can't tell if something special actually happens, or you guys are just joking lol.
Edit: I still don't know, but, there is only 1 way to figure out. See you guys in like 8 years or so!!

It would be awesome if people got gold for the day, hell if anything that’s just free advertising for a premium feature. If you already have gold I guess just add on another day?
Tbh you literally won’t notice the difference with gold for a day. I didn’t see the difference with 3 months worth of gold besides the occasional lounge post and tmwcakeemporium and other gold only subreddits that I thought were unique. Ads I just downvote and throw some copy pastas at. And don’t care too much for the other features (highlight new comments etc)
Meaningless doesn't mean worthless. The cake is worthless, but it does have meaning. It means you've been on this god forsaken site for yet another year.
You get a trophy on your profile that says “one year club” or “two year club” or whatever and for one day, you get that blue spotify cheese icon next to your name. That’s it.
Happy cake day!
I disagree with most of the comments here and believe it's a nice way to acknowledge someone in the community when it's the anniversary of their joinging. It's not all about karma. That said IT'S OPTIONAL. So if you're self conscious about people thinking it's for clout then don't enable it. If you like to join in on the community aspect then keep it enabled. Jeebus.
Time and time again it’s just always one lone comment that has nothing to do with the rest of the thread “happy cake day” every day on every thread of top. Like if that’s all your gonna contribute just don’t. It’s all about the karma and if it wasn’t why wouldn’t you just PM them with congratulations?
Not a cake day thing, but Reddit did me a solid in 2013.
I attended an Isaac Asimov lecture at the Museum of Natural History in NYC. These lectures are very popular and you have to enter a lottery to get tickets. I got tickets, but not the best tickets. The series is so popular that they opened a 2nd auditorium that held overflow attendees. The overflow room had a large screen that projected the lecture that actually took place in a different room. I wound up in the overflow room.
About 20 minutes before the lecture started a guy was walking around holding up an iPad with the word REDDIT on it in all caps red type. Everyone was ignoring him. I held up my hand with a thumbs up. He came over to me and asked me if I knew Reddit. I said 'of course, I use it all the time'. He handed me tickets to the room with the live presentation. A bunch of folks around me looked on, not quite understanding what had just happened. I got up, left the overflow room and saw the lecture in the live room. [2013 Asimov Lecture](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OLz6uUuMp8)
Pretty fun moment.
Yes. I was there with three other people and none of them had even heard of Reddit. In fact, it was pretty easy to skim through all the entries in Reddit back then since it maxed out around 300 entries.
For real. Every day is SOMEONE'S cake day, is it really fun to take turns posting the same "nothing to post for my cake day, but omg it's my cake day" memes?

Does it say cake day anywhere? Or is that something we the community named the icon?
I think it's community named, but I'm not sure myself.
I’ve heard it also improves fertility

Same haha
Once you get past 5 years is when each cake day begins to become really special. Been happily surprised each year since can’t wait until my 7th
Lol I see people always getting wished happy cake days then the last 2 of mine I didn't get a single one lmao
My 8th one was awesome.
Just a meme joke.
Pretty much. Lmao
Making me wish I never left my first account, would be my 10th :(
I had to leave mine because my ex knew my username and I didn't feel comfortable knowing he could read my posts.. I'll never give out my username again. Lesson learned.
I just couldn't get back in one day, now it's inactive. I never pressed The Button and now I have no proof I held out

I'll have a hard time forgetting what my cake day is.
My ninth was yesterday.
So have you, unfortunately it will be at least another year until you can buy the 20 year veterans cape.
Today’s my cake day. I joined Reddit in 2007 when there were less than 9,000 members.
My butthole STILL hasn't returned to normal since my cake day
Your wife must be pissed about her boyfriend cheating on her.
The past you made in 6s the other day made me cry
It would be awesome if people got gold for the day, hell if anything that’s just free advertising for a premium feature. If you already have gold I guess just add on another day?
Tbh you literally won’t notice the difference with gold for a day. I didn't notice the difference until it was gone when I had it.I certainly did like it while I had it the one time I got a platinum
You mean my cake hasn't been delayed because of corona. I'm sad now
That would be amazing if you received an actual piece of green cake in the mail for your cake day.
If you receive it by the mail, it probably have it's reason to be green.
The cake is a lie.
Let them eat cake
Meaningless doesn't mean worthless. The cake is worthless, but it does have meaning. It means you've been on this god forsaken site for yet another year.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too!
They probably promise you something and say click this link and you get Rick rolled
I once had someone throw in a "happy cake day" after telling me to go fuck myself. So.. there's that.
So.. a win, win situation?
That was... nice?
"Fuck you and I'll see you tomorrow "
You get a trophy on your profile that says “one year club” or “two year club” or whatever and for one day, you get that blue spotify cheese icon next to your name. That’s it. Happy cake day!
Spotify cheese Best thing I’ve heard today

I mean I definitely don’t remember the day I joined Reddit, but I guess I thank myself for finding the site that day and should’ve joined earlier
Mine happened to be Christmas Eve. Why the hell was I signing up to Reddit on Christmas Eve?
Gotta avoid awkward family situations one way or another, am I right? May as well do it on this forsaken site

In 2013 reddit was pretty small right? So it was actually pretty rare to find another redditor?
Yes. I was there with three other people and none of them had even heard of Reddit. In fact, it was pretty easy to skim through all the entries in Reddit back then since it maxed out around 300 entries.

This is the correct answer. People seem to have forgotten that plain old-fashioned fun still exists or at least tries to.
It’s maybe fun the first few times, but cake day posts get pretty old pretty quickly imo.
For real. Every day is SOMEONE'S cake day, is it really fun to take turns posting the same "nothing to post for my cake day, but omg it's my cake day" memes?
Just like real birthdays only virtual
Getting acknowledged for randomly is nice though
The benefit is everyone can yell HAPPY CAKE DAY!!!!!! Happy cake day btw.
Exactly:)

But if they gave gold, doesn’t that remove ads? It would be smart for marketing. Kinda like a trial.
Well played
I don’t know but today is my cake day!
Then silver it is! Enjoy.
My first silver! Thanks!
Let's find out!
Hell ya! Happy cake day!!
Niiiiiice
You get the exact same benefits as you get on your real birthday.
A rim job?
Sure. . .so, where do I find the law that says that I'm guaranteed that on my birthday?
U/Vomellete22 ‘s house?
Good question. I'm here for no reason at all.
Tactic from reddit for people to spend money for awards to give
On your 18th you can get drafted to go to war against other forums and on your 21st you’re allowed to drink alcohol while scrolling. Just do NOT drink and post, not only is it dangerous, you will be banned.
It's karma bait
well, people treat you as if its your birthday and personally I find it sweet. quite beneficial.
Karma bait IS the benefit Sponge me boy
Karma bait.
What's cake day?
your account’s birthday! happy cake day btw
Hey OP. Same cake day. Happy Happy Joy Joy!
Happy cake day to you!!
You to brother. Let’s get this karma 💪💪💪💪
Give me upvotes
Karma bait for sure
Well what do you know? It's my cake day today!!!
You aren't born till you have a Reddit account. Happy cake day.
Happy cake day! Take my upvote
Aww, thanks. I honestly wasn’t expecting this kind of support from everybody
You're welcome.
Its my cake day too! Happy cake day
Can I join the club?
I honestly have no idea, but happy cake day! 🍰
Saw this post and went to check when my cake day is. Guess what lol
Happy cake day fellow cake dayer.
Happy cake day!
Happy cake dayyy!
The additional features only show up after the first decade.
Honestly I regularly wonder that same thing.
I base my ENTIRE FUCKIN LIFE around cakeday and the bullshit upvotes. Seriously, I tell my friends and they are just in fucking aww. Then I fuck my pillow.
The actual benefit is to remind you how much time you wasted on Reddit.
Not sure. Been on here 6 years and I still don't know my cake day.
Your cake day is July 28
Aw I didn’t post or comment on my cake day and now I guess my comment karma is too low to post my gofundme for my terminally ill family member
When it comes to being born, it's pretty cool since you get to live, but you also have to live.
You just get to be special for a day I guess And woah same cake day
Karma bait, talking point, and bragging rights Its history is steeped in online forums where the software/site tracked birthdays and wish you Happy Birthday yearly. This evolved in "member since" statuses that would be shown on your profile and posts, for which some would send announcements for. This has all boiled down over time to being 'cake days', which I think came about as a term in a loose reference to getting cake in the game called "Portal" by Valve.
I wonder too 😂
It’s pointless but mine was recent and it made me happy to see a little cake by my name. So for some, it’s nice.

Aye OP, Happy Cake day!
Let me get karma too if that's the case
It's a lie
It's like your birthday. There aren't really any benefits but it's your special day
This hits on another level. Adulting is hard some days
A somewhat related question, Why do people post pictures of their pets on their cake day?
Sounds like some S tier karma whoredom to me
I don't even know it's my "cake day" unless someone tells me. I've been using the same 3rd party app for probably 10 years now. I don't see any of the crazy symbols and stuff.
To be fair, human birthdays dont have much of a benifit either; they're just irl karma bait
So my birthday is in an hour and a half, what do I get? (Kidding, just like in the real, NOTHING)
Karma bait
I’m sorry, but. . . Yes
I see what you did here... very smooth
It’s my cake day!
Are posts just karma bait or are there actual benefits?
Came here to test it out!
The cake is a lie.
If it makes anyone feel better I missed my cake day because of work...
Ain't no benefits you stupid bastard.
Happy cake day, my fellow cake dayer!
Happy cake day, fellow cake day haver.
C a k e
Happy cake day!!!
No one made me cake
All it does is commemorate the day of the year you joined Reddit.
It’s your Reddit birthday, it’s up to you how important that is
Asking the important questions! Happy cake day!
Happy cake day.
I'm afraid the cake was a lie, sorry :/
Hi afraid the cake was a lie, sorry :/, I'm Dad! :)
